I am newly diagnosed with colon cancer. How do I move forward mentally and emotionally?

As someone who was diagnosed with terminal cancer and only given weeks to live, and then went to three more oncologists (who confirmed the initial prognosis), and went into trauma, I feel for you.We all have to do our own thing, but for me being a strongly pro-active and assertive person, I just kept going looking for a ‘solution’. This involved initially getting and following the advice of a nutritionist who promised that if I followed his protocol I’d be cured - I did, exactly; for three months. The tumour that had been removed returned big-time; I went into severe decline; and into a hospice to die.Whilst on the protocol (which did, I believe, build me up for what came later), I’d seen yet another specialist, this time in a national cancer centre. He told me that chemo worked in 5% of cases and might be worth a try (the previous experts had dismissed this as only giving a marginal extension of life and would be lowering my quality of life too). So I did it. All in 2007.I was also fortunate in having a wife who pulled me out of the hospice so I could die at home. Meanwhile I’d started the chemo; had 11 sessions; and did more lifestyle improvements (see below).A brief summary is of what I do, based on the best scientific evidence (check on Google, PubMed): (see supporting evidence by clicking on the underlined words) and assuming the patient is sufficiently motivated to survive longer (many are not) to do this – but if you are new too many of these, then it is probably best adopting a new one every week or two:a. Avoid any smoking (and here), both by the patients and those around them, including e-cigarettesb. exercise (which pumps the lymph system, the immune system, around the body): I walk for about 2 hours/day (13,000+ steps/6.5 miles) (also keeps Alzheimer’s disease at bay); and 2-3 times a week I do simple resistance exercises plus 3 bursts of 20 seconds high intensity interval exercises (HIIT; now on a stationary cycle, previously sprints) with 2 minutes of slow between. It's never too late to start exercising, new study shows, It is important also to enable we cancer patients to reverse ageing effects. Lots of veggies works for me. Organic may be best. High-fiber helps (see also here). I've recently embarked on a "Fasting Mimicking Diet" 5 days/month (fasting in general is thought useful – see here), as it is reported to reduce ageing/increase immune function (but probably best not done unless well clear of any evidence of cancer). The microbiome, mainly the gut bugs, is a major source of health/illness/immune system and the bug balance influences this. Avoid BPA plastics; beware sunscreens (I've not used them for years, despite walking for hour/week in the sun, as I've realised most sunscreens contain cocarcinogens – note: sunscreen usage has increased in line with skin cancer over the years).n. Supplements: omega 3 (see here), 2,000IU Vit.D3 daily (and see here, here, here, here, here, here, but note caution, and here). Vit.C is found helpful for some cancers. However, avoid vitamins B6 and B12, especially for lung cancer; and perhaps Vitamins A, C and E; but note this caution and here. Aspirin or ibuprofen may help.(see here)o. Hyperthermia with an infra-red cocoon, and hypothermia: Immersion or showering in cold water boosts the immune system. I do this one occasionally.p. It helps the clinical treatments be more effective and reduces the side-effects. Plus even if a cancer patient goes into remission, they are always at greater risk of cancer again (and here) than those who've never had cancer in the first place. Cancer is by and large a disease of ageing, perhaps due to weakening immune systems and here, hereNote several things about the information and advice that your doctor will give you: diagnosis is not an exact science; that different people respond differently to both the same diagnosis and the same treatments. Remember, doctors advise, patients decide (that’s why the doctors get you to sign a form, to say that it is your decision, not theirs). And that survival times (the prognosis) are at best averages, based on historical patients and treatments - whereas hopefully there are constant improvements which ought to improve the average survival times; many people live much longer than the average. There are many cautionary reports to underline my view that the experts themselves do not always agree, and much of what they proffer may not be based on research, for example:I’m alive today, after being told in 2007 that I only had weeks to live by four consultants. All doctor's recommended treatments are based on averages – individual patients will vary greatly in their response, partly due to their lifestyles but also due to their genetic make-up. At present these wide variations of response to seemingly identical treatments for the same diagnosis are inexplicable/unpredictable.Mum had double mastectomy and chemotherapy - and was then told she never had cancer'Oops... How can I become manly as a teenager?

There are already some tremendous answers here, especially from Kriztofer Plitzkin and J Langness. I’d like to add my own 2 cents to this topic as I’ve spent some time thinking about this throughout my own life.First of all, we have to make a distinction between two separate things. There is a difference between becoming a good man and becoming good at being a man.Being a good man entails the achievement of certain desirable virtues that make up a moral and upstanding individual. Values such as honesty, caring for others, and showing grace, among other things.Becoming manly is a different matter entirely. Masculinity at its essence is about demonstrating responsibility, strength, wisdom, perseverance, prowess, courage, and leadership. Masculinity means that a man must bravely face all the challenges and obstacles that life throws at him in stride and fight back. Manliness is about refusing to shrink from the pain and constantly hitting back. President Theodore Roosevelt called this living the strenuous life on purpose. You must hit back not just for yourself but for others. You must fight with your brothers in arms and for your family, the weak, the young, and the elderly. The development of manliness was forged in a time of tribes where men were responsible for defending the tribe’s territory, bringing back food from the hunt, fighting wars to secure advantages for the tribe, ensuring the protection of women and children, and developing the next generation of warriors. The vast majority of men were warriors, hunters, and protectors. There was a sense of honor among men. By virtue of being male, you were automatically part of the male honor group or fraternity in which you were expected to be responsible, strong, courageous, skilled, and dependable. When it was time for you to go on your first hunt or battle, you had to prove yourself to your brothers in order to be worth anything. Your ranking in the honor group meant that others had to judge you favorably in order for you to receive the esteem of the tribe and a woman with whom you’d procreate and build a family with. You had to prove yourself to your elders and your brothers again and again. Slacking off, being lazy, and “not feeling like it” were not options for men until very recently. If you were not competent and esteemed among your honor group and by extension the tribe, you wouldn't get much to eat, would be treated like a burden, and no woman would lay with you to continue your line. With that history lesson in mind, here are some things you must do in order to transition from a boy into a man.Take responsibilityThe biggest problem with males nowadays is that taking responsibility is delayed for years and years. Remember this, there were 14, 15, and 16 year old badass mf’s who lied about their ages on their military enlistment forms in order to have the privilege of fighting for their country in WWII. This crazy SOB and American hero below enlisted in the USMC at the age of 14 and won the Congressional Medal of Honor for his extraordinary courage and valor at the Battle of Iwo Jima.(PFC Jack Lucas, U.S. Marine Corps - WWII Veteran)The most important thing you must do is start taking some responsibility for yourself. That means getting a job, learning a skill, earning money, saving, and investing. I know you have been hamstrung by ridiculous laws, regulations, and societal standards that have forced energetic young men into the 8–9 hour a day hell that is the modern school system instead of allowing them to work and learn practical skills. Forget all those excuses and do your best to get a job. Getting a job will help you learn basic life skills such as getting to work on time, communication skills, and the value of a hard day’s work.Do your own laundry, clean your room, make your bed, handle the basic maintenance of your stuff (bike, car, computer, phone, etc.), start helping your dad with repairs around the house, and try to take fixed responsibility for some tasks around the house.A sense of ownership and responsibility over a job will be one of the major catalysts into making you a man.Leave home ASAPStaying at home too long will make you into a mama’s boy. The natural urge for most moms will be to spoil you. Even if she’s yelling and hollering that you need to grow up and get a job, chances are that she still cooks for you, does some of your chores, tells your dad to lay off you, and is still extremely protective of you. It is completely natural for your mom to always think of you as her baby boy. If you stay too long, she will inadvertently stifle your development and will delay you from growing into a man.As soon as you turn 18 and graduate high school, you need to get the hell out of the house to attend college, work and live on your own, or join the military. Do not stay at home! If money is tight, you can work full time for a couple of years and live on your own prior to attending college. Chances are that you will live until you’re at least 75. Delaying college for a few years isn't the end of the world. The experiences and trials that you’ll face living on your own will forge you into a resilient man and will make you more mature which will help you succeed in college.Engage in masculine activitiesThere are certain activities which will develop your innate masculinity. I would recommend engaging in combat sports such as boxing, Jiu Jitsu, Judo, MMA, or wrestling. Martial arts training has several benefits which include self defense skills, physical fitness, an appropriate and controlled environment in which to release aggression, the development of self discipline and mastery, and finding an honor group. If owning and using firearms is legal in your country, take gun safety and marksmanship classes. In my opinion (as an American), being skilled with firearms is one of the most important masculine skills. Becoming a student of the gun is essential in developing discipline, prowess, focus, self-defense skills, and being useful to the country during wartime as a serviceman or militiaman. If you cannot adequately defend yourself, your loved ones, your property, your liberty, and your country with force, you cannot claim to be manly.Unless you have some deep seated moral opposition to hunting and fishing, you should become competent in both. There are scenarios in which it is essential for you to be able to feed yourself and your family and the regular options may not be available. What if you get lost in the forest for a few days? What if the country is facing a major war? What if there’s a famine? In addition, hunting and fishing help you develop patience, skill mastery, and most importantly the ability to make peace with killing and cooking an animal. Your first kill tends to harden you and being hardened is essential for a man. Emotional fragility is not an option for men.Engage in some activity which requires constant learning, skill, practice, patience, and creativity such as carpentry, welding, farming, gardening, and/or tinkering with cars and electronics. These skills will make you useful and develop your ability to do work that is physically and mentally challenging.Read and become wiseMany young men in this generation rarely read books other than what they are required to read for school, college, and work. They waste far too much time binge watching TV, playing video games, and mindlessly scrolling through social media.Reading good books and actually absorbing the lessons of those books is an essential life skill. Head to the bookshelf in your house, Amazon, your local bookstore, or the library and identify a few good books and get cracking. I will make a few book recommendations at the end of this answer.Learn about the great men of historyYou don't have to reinvent the wheel to become manly and a great man. Luckily, the lessons of history are easily accessible to us, if only we would look in the right direction and learn them. There were billions of men who lived before you and I, and thousands of them have had their stories recorded.Spend some time learning about the great men. Some of these men might not have been the most moral or decent by today’s or any standards, but they were definitely great and masculine. These men were the Generals, Admirals, Soldiers, Kings, Emperors, Presidents, Politicians, Thinkers, Conquerors, Explorers, Inventors, and Entrepreneurs.Read about great figures such as Alexander the Great, Hannibal, Julius Caesar, Attila the Hun, Genghis Khan (and his Generals Jebe and Subedei), Napoleon, Yi-Sun Shin, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Nathanael Greene, Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, Thomas Stonewall Jackson, Teddy Roosevelt, Douglas MacArthur, George Patton, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Lewis “Chesty” Puller, Georgy Zhukov, Matthew Ridgeway, Creighton Abrams, Norman Schwarzkopf, Tommy Franks, David Petraeus, and Jim Mattis.(George Washington: Commanding General - Continental Army, 1st U.S. President, and Father of the American Republic)(Genghis Khan of Mongolia, arguably the greatest conqueror of all time)(Lt. Gen. Lewis “Chesty” Puller, U.S. Marine Corps)Read about men who were born in unremarkable circumstances but worked their way to greatness. American Military heroes such as Alvin York, Audie Murphy, John Basilone, E.B. Sledge, Edward A. Carter Jr., Ira Hayes, Edward Gomez, Carlos Hathcock, Roy Benavidez, Chris Kyle, Mike Spann, Kyle Carpenter, and Dakota Meyer.Learn their lessons and apply them in your own life.Develop strong mental, physical, and emotional self disciplineAs Retired U.S. Navy SEAL and Podcaster Jocko Willink says, “discipline equals freedom”. Developing a sense of mental, physical, and emotional self-discipline is imperative to ensuring that you becoming a strong, self-reliant, and dependable man.You need to develop clarity in your thinking and not allow yourself to become distracted by many of the trappings of modern life. Don't dawdle on social media when you are supposed to be studying, don't watch time wasting YouTube videos when you should be mowing the lawn, and stop making excuses when you should be training. Clear, focused, logical, and disciplined mental processing should be your goal. It will take a lifetime, but that doesn't mean you get to quit.Physical fitness in the form of skill and strength is essential to manliness. You must get into shape immediately. Having a flabby and loose body is not an option. Martial arts will help you become strong and skilled, but that’s not enough. After consulting with a Doctor and ensuring you are ok to start a training regime, you must start a physical fitness program that incorporates martial arts, strength training, and general cardiovascular exercise. Start off slow and gradually build up over the course of the coming months. Being skilled at fighting, becoming strong, and developing stamina should be your goals. You should be able to run 3 miles in 24 minutes or less, do at least 10 pull-ups, and do 60 push-ups and sit-ups in 2 minutes each. Additionally, you should be able to squat, deadlift, and bench press at least your bodyweight. With regard to diet, it is pretty simple. If you avoid gorging yourself with junk food, soda, and heavy carbs everyday, you are eating healthy. A simple, healthy, and effective diet consists of lean meat, legumes, and vegetables. Cook them however you like and mix it up with various herbs and spices. In addition to this, drink lots of water and avoid excessive consumption of anything. Temperance is key.Do not allow yourself to become addicted to tobacco, drugs, and alcohol. Having a few pegs of Scotch with a buddy every few weeks is ok, but again temperance is key. Do not attempt to drown out life’s difficulties with drugs and alcohol. Be a man and face the fire.Emotional discipline is an absolute necessity for a man. Nowadays, you see so many men who constantly whine, bitch, and complain. They don't have the ability to endure even slight discomfort without crying like babies. Whining in public, flying off the handle over little issues, and crying in front of others are prohibited. Tears are permitted only at funerals and when the national anthem is playing. A man must remain stoic and in control of his mind and body, or things can get very ugly.Lastly, stop blaming others for your issues. Solve your own problems and be a man about it.Stop these destructive activitiesExcessive TV watching, video games, pornography, masturbation, and mindless social media consumption are the most destructive activities the average young man engages in. Stop them right now, they are destroying you!Spending 8 hours on Friday evening watching Game of Thrones is not a productive or desirable use of time. You could have studied, worked overtime, read a book, written a few essays, gardened, or done literally any other productive activity. If you want to relax, you can exercise, read, or go out with friends and talk to real people. Binge watching movies and TV shows will destroy your will to do anything productive and waste your day. It is also highly addictive. Stop binge watching TV!You know why we like war video games like Call of Duty? Because it simulates the danger, excitement, camaraderie, and glory all men crave. Instead of actually putting life and limb at risk by joining the military, we can pretend to do it for a few hours every night. We become addicted and it saps our motivation for self-improvement and productivity. Stop playing video games!Pornography and excessive masturbation have several destructive effects on a young man. First of all, porn paints a very unrealistic picture of what sex is like. Second of all, you lose the motivation to grow a pair and actually go out there and convince a girl to have sex with you. Third of all, it becomes very addictive and after the dopamine rush wears off, you feel worn out, tired, and unmotivated. Stop watching porn and jerking off! Instead, go out there and find a girlfriend.Social media companies implement a variety of strategies to addict their customers to their product so that they become captive. We are all victims of this and I don't blame the companies, it’s only natural that they would try to maximize profits. You must have the self-discipline to limit the amount of time you spend on social media because it leads to wasting so much time and fills your head full of junk while giving you anxiety. The best solution is to just delete all of your social media accounts and never look back. You won't stop having friends and family if you don't have social media accounts. Stop wasting time on social media!Meet objective standardsContrary to modern day popular opinion, not everything in life is a subjective opinion. There are objective standards that one must meet in order to succeed. For the activities and challenges you are undertaking, identify objective standards of success and work your ass off to meet and even surpass them.Find your male honor groupTrue honor is not something one can develop on their own. In order to develop honor, you must be part of a male honor group. A group in which the other men will hold you accountable and will reward you with esteem only based on specific criteria and your performance in accordance with said criteria.Examples of male honor groups are the military, police force, fire department, EMS, coal mining crew, wrestling team, work group at your job, gang, fraternity, etc.Find a (legal) honor group of some sort and work hard to develop your sense of honor.Learn the truth about societyIt is in vogue to disregard and even disdain masculinity. However, the reality is that they will come running to men when disaster strikes and they will denigrate us if we refuse to step up to the plate. Whether it be war, natural disaster, national crisis, or famine, men will always be expected to step up to the plate, solve the problem, and defend the society. After we have solved the problem, we will be forgotten and discarded. That is the reality of life. Not every man is living a life that requires strenuous physical labor, but men are still overall expected to preserve, protect, defend, provide, and build. We have to do all of that and take a bunch of insults too.Pop culture and the intelligentsia which is made up of public intellectuals, the media, and politicians say masculinity is some outdated bullsh*t ideology that isn't relevant anymore. That is malarkey and they know it. But they have to sell their ideology to weak fools anyway, so they continue to propagate this falsehood.Traditional manliness is not “toxic” nor is it irrelevant. Society will always need strong and resilient men. Don't buy into the BS.I hope that my answer will be helpful in your path to become manly. I wish you luck.Book Recommendations:Washington (Ron Chernow)Lee (Douglas Southall Freeman)Genghis Khan: His Conquests, His Empire, His Legacy (Frank McLynn)Genghis Khan’s Greatest General: Subotai the Valiant (Richard A. what is chronic kidney diseases?

What is Chronic Kidney Disease?Chronic Kidney Disease is a condition where your kidney does not work, or we can also say the gradual loss of kidney function. The kidney plays an important role in maintaining our body healthy by filtering wastes and excess fluids from blood, where this waste is then defecated in the urine. This disease never comes suddenly; your kidney gets affected slowly with the time and when this disease reaches to the advanced stage, the levels of fluids and wastes that build up in your body increases to great extent. In this article, you will get to know the symptoms, causes, and treatment of chronic kidney disease. You will also learn about the recommended foods as well as preventive measures to avoid making your condition worse.Symptoms of Kidney diseaseIn the early stages of CKD, you may notice a few signs or symptoms, which even sometimes may not be diagnosed by the doctor as well. It may become hard to diagnose the actual cause of these symptoms until the function of your kidney is significantly weakened. The kidney disease symptoms develop over time if your kidney stops functioning slowly. The signs and symptoms of CKD are often common, which means they can also be caused if you are suffering from other illnesses. So, when you experience these symptoms, it does not mean that there is some problem with your kidney. The only treatment that left at the end-stage of CKD is to go for either dialysis or kidney transplant. For the diagnosis of kidney disease, the doctor asks about the details of your personal and family history, along with your other health conditions. Like, have you ever been diagnosed with high blood pressure? Is there anyone in your family who has kidney disease? Have you ever gone through the changes in your urinary habits? And several other questions, which may directly or indirectly related to kidney disease. After the discussion, your doctor will analyze everything and come to the point where he/she will ask you to perform certain tests. These may include:Blood TestsThis test will provide the level of creatinine, urea and other waste products present in your blood.Urine TestsThis test is conducted by analyzing your urine sample and reveals the abnormalities, if any, that indicates chronic kidney disease and helps in identifying the cause as well.Imaging TestsIt involves an ultrasound of your kidneys to check their structure and size. In some cases, other imaging tests are also used to diagnose the disease.Sample of Kidney TissueIt involves kidney biopsy, where a sample of kidney tissue is taken using the local anesthesia and a thin needle is inserted into your kidney. This sample is then sent for further tests to determine the actual cause of your kidney problem. On the basis of the results of these tests, your doctor will move further. Usually, chronic kidney disease treatment starts by controlling the underlying cause of kidney failure.CKD can progress to end-stage kidney failure, which sometimes hard to treat the patient and end up with only one solution i.e. artificial filtering (dialysis) or a kidney transplant.DialysisIn this treatment, the waste products and extra fluids from blood, which your kidneys are unable to excrete, are removed artificially. Further, this chronic kidney disease treatment involves two ways of excreting this waste and extra fluid.Hemodialysis – In this type of dialysis, a machine is used to filter the waste and excess fluids from your blood.Peritoneal Dialysis – In this type of dialysis, a catheter (a thin tube) is inserted into your stomach that fills the stomach cavity with a dialysis solution and absorbs that unwanted waste and extra fluids. With time, this dialysis solution is carried off from your body, along with the waste.Kidney TransplantIn this chronic kidney disease treatment, a healthy kidney is transplanted from a donor into your body. It involves several hours of surgery of placing a kidney of the dead or living donor to give you a new life. After kidney transplantation, you have to follow various necessary preventative measures and medications for the rest of your life. It is mandatory to keep your body well-prepared from rejecting the new organ. If you have made your mind for this treatment, there is no need to be on dialysis. As these treatments are quite expensive and are usually out of the budget for the common people, some do not agree with such chronic kidney disease treatment. It is so because they are not prepared to carry the huge medical bills and other expenses. So, in such cases, the doctor suggests them to go with conservative measures that can help patients to live for another few months.Food RecommendationWhether your doctor recommended dialysis, a kidney transplant or other method as chronic kidney disease treatment, he/she will also recommend a change in your diet and lifestyle. The main purpose is to follow a diet that supports your kidneys and overall health.Avoid foods with added saltYou should avoid foods with added salt, such as frozen food items, canned soups, fast foods, salty snack foods, processed meats, cheeses and other foods with extra salt. The main aim is to lower the amount of sodium in your daily diet.Consume lower potassium foodsYou are also suggested to consume lower potassium foods in every meal. Foods rich in potassium are not good for people with kidney disease. Such foods include bananas, potatoes, spinach, peas, broccoli, apricots, and others. Low-potassium foods include apples, blueberries, fruit cocktail, cabbage, lettuce, eggplant, onion, and others. If you have kidney failure, you should also avoid salt substitutes containing potassium.Limit the protein intakeYou can take help of a dietitian to determine the approximate amount of protein you can take each day and go further with your diet plans accordingly. If you are noticing kidney disease symptoms, strictly stay away from high-protein foods. Now, it is the time to include low-protein foods in your meals, these include vegetables, fruits, grains, cereals, and healthy fats.Preventive Measures‘Prevention is better than cure’, this statement is 100% true, which means if you follow certain guidelines, the risk of developing kidney disease decreases to great extent or also prevent your condition to get worse.Avoid too much pain relieversYou may suffer from any kind of pain one or another day, but it does not mean you have to completely dependent on pain relievers. While I was reviewing a couple of unauthorized charges on my PayPal account I noticed they were from Cocodoc Upon further investigation as to what Cocodocis, I realized that this was due to something a professor from a course I had taken last year had required the class to use to complete an assignment. He assured us that though we may need to put in our personal information, the service we were using would be "free". I did not realize that “free” was then turned into a renewable purchase fee. I contacted Cocodocto dispute the charges and explained what had happened. This company responded to my email with genuine kindness within a couple of hours to assist me with providing a refund upon receipt of a response providing verification information. I emailed them the information and again, within a couple of hours, I received a response that I had been refunded the fee. I appreciate how professional, considerate, and amazingly responsive this company has been- the whole process was quick and painless and I will certainly consider using Cocodocin the future should I need such a service!!
