This old chest nut.It's 11 weeksMinus the 10 days/2 weeks of public holidays in those holidays everyone else getsThe 4 weeks I'm doing reports and writing up new programs because some idiot within the department of education who has never taught has found a ‘new way of teaching’One week of staff development days that usually consist of workplace safety, first aid, emergency drills, child protection updates etc etc2 weeks of marking assignmentsCountless weekends of marking and making lesson plans and individual learning plans for special needs students who shouldn't be in my class roomYeah do the maths, I'm behind in my time off. Oh and when I do get to do something, it's in peak time, costs double and I'm out surrounded by kidsAs for the pay, I'll break it down for youTeachers pay is good at the start. But after a few years all your friends over take you for doing a fraction of the workThe responsibility toward child protection is absurd. I have written about this before. More and more teachers are becoming scaredLoss of authorityIncreasing work load for petty reasonsConstant criticism from ignorant parents and the publicIncreasing workload for what parents should be doing. No I don't want to be instructing your child on how to do domestic chores or how to drive.

Hi It could be questions from different sources or regarding Different topics on school's policies ( Welfare ,health? diet , safety, academic.teaching practices, extra mural ativities such as music lessons . Mini sports or Yoga for minus , drama ,outings , intertainments to school during festivals or festive season holidays , fun raising, Cummunity involvement example visits from old age members to share their skills ( story telling or baking skills or Pottery .) Pre schoolers sport day including Grannies or gardening ) Gees a lot of interactive could take place .Just keep asking the school with a View for Bigger picture .International students Volunteers .exchange programme from the school sending teachers to Share ideas with different school .Do they have a policy on staff development programmes. Funny, I don’t remember bumping you from the last spot in the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Secondary Education classes. 1980 - 84.This means that, even though you grew up *knowing* that teachers “have summers and holidays off,” you decided not to become a teacher. That’s the choice you made. You knew full well how cushy we’ve got it, yet you chose a different career.Holidays off: Here in Wisconsin, Thanksgiving falls inside the sacred 10-day gun deer season. In my district, we are off on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. I’ll show up on Black Friday! Heck, Wednesday, too! Let’s make those school days, so that we can get out in May.But—but, you argue, “It’s Thanksgiving!!” Only Thursday is actually Thanksgiving. You mean you have to go to Grandma’s, and to the in-laws? And all of those fantastic sales?? If those poor CSRs have to work on Friday, why not teachers and STUDENTS??On to Christmas. Christmas/Winter break is dictated by our calendar. Christmas and New Year’s Day, federal holidays both, are always one week apart. This year, those occur on Wednesdays. (This is probably the longest Christmas break the calendar will allow, at least in my district.)This year, my district gets 12 days, if you include the weekend before. Saturday, December 21, to Wednesday, January 1.I will gladly come in on Monday, December 23, 26, 27, and 30. Heck, I’d come in for a half day on New Year’s Eve. Send your kids!But—but, Grandma and the in-laws’ again. More sales!This year, for the first time ever, students in my district have off on the MLK holiday. We lucky staff will have a full day of “Staff Development.” Trust me—most of us would rather have your kids. No disrespect to Dr. King.Also new this year, we have off for Presidents’ Day/Washington’s Birthday!!We have 4 school days off, 6 total, for Spring Break.We have off for Memorial Day, but the Friday before might be used as a weather make-up day. This past year was horrible for snow days and cold days. We had to make up on all of our weather days AND add to the end of the year.Summer: I taught Summer School, and I’m taking professional development on my own time. After a PD session, I spend time looking at resources and figuring out how to implement some of the content.I’m figuring out which supplies I’ll need for my room. I won’t be able to see my class lists for a couple of weeks, so I don’t know what I’ll need or how many.I’m overseeing my school’s digital learners. If I have to email parents or students to “nudge” them to get working, I might be spending 2–3 unpaid hours per week.Next week I am attending a session about dealing with violent students.The pay: In my district, we have the option of having our salaries spread out over the 10-month school year or the full 12-month year. I end up with the same amount on my W-2 either way. It’s just a lot easier to budget when you get paid every two weeks, year-round.I love the argument that “teachers are just glorified babysitters. Pay them like babysitters.” According to glassdoor.com, a child care worker earns $10/hour. If each parent paid $10/hour, for, say, a first-grade teacher with a class of 25 students, that teacher would earn $250 per hour. 7 hours per day, that teacher would earn $1750 per day. 180 student-contact days, that teacher would learn $315,000 for the school year. YES!! Pay us like babysitters!Many parents and their students show little respect for a teacher and the teacher’s time. I was at a meeting this last week. Afterward I stopped at school to pick up my new electronic key card. The secretary answered the phone, and started laughing. It was one of my digital learners needing my attention. “What in the world made you think I’d be here? I’ll be able to help you in about half an hour.”When I got home, there were 2 emails from Mom, an hour apart, telling me the student’s issue. For some reason, we’re supposed to be on email 24/7. (I let Mom know to give me up to 24 hours to respond during the summer.)
