Do most Marine officers use issued swords, or do they purchase the Cold Steel USMC Officers' Sword?
As a former enlisted Marine, and former Marine Officer I’m pretty confident I can answer this one. All uniform articles, whether they outfit a Private or a General must be authorized for use by MarCorpSysCom.This is taken from Marlow White, a USMC Authorized Sword Vendor, and it explains how vendors get authorization to sell their swords. While all branches publish specifications for their swords, the Marine Corps is the only service branch that has a program to independently inspect swords and to certify that each retail vendor meets the specifications. The certification program is described in a Marine Corps Technical Manual -- TM10120-15/2, which requires the following major actions for the Marine swords:A vendor submits two sample swords to the Marine Corps Systems Command (MarCorSysCom) for inspection.Once the swords pass inspection, MarCorSysCom issues a certification letter and certification number to the vendor. The vendor must etch the certification number into the spine of the blade, next to the grip. The vendor must renew its certification every five years (TM10120-15/2, page 4, as changed).Once a vendor is certified, MarCorSysCom will issue the vendor a certification letter with an expiration date. Now that being said, there are quite a few vendors of swords and places to buy them from, as well as things like dress blues etc. High-End Marine Uniform Items usually come from the famous (At least among Marines) “Marine Shop” in Quantico, VA. Usually officers and staff non commissioned officers purchase their uniforms here. Simple uniform items usually cost 20–50% more than exchange brands. But there are other shops that sell authorized gear. My personal set of dress blues as well as my officer sword were purchased from MCX (The Base Exchange Brand, for the minimalist ) Arguably the attention to detail is not as good as uniforms purchased from the Marine Shop. I have to agree with this, as I have seen fellow officers who purchased their uniforms there, and they just seem a bit finer, from the details on their cufflinks, to the traditional leather soled oxfords. If I was going to make the Marines a career I would have purchased a second set of blues from this vendor. As far as fabric quality they are comparable. But anyway I veered off topic. The swords themselves however are more or less the same with the established vendors. My sword is made by Officers Equipment Company, who makes a ton of stuff for all branches of the US Military. But there are other brands that are authorized, Weyersburg, Kirschbaum and Co. is what the Marine Shop sells. There are other authorized brands, or formerly authorized brands that may have lost the right to distribute. Cold Steel is not one of them, and has never been one of them.I have actually seen one of these swords in person during a sword arch I did for a wedding. One of the officers had one, and I must say the detailing and the grip materials are just not made up to a spec MarCorSysCom would except. For one the grip and fittings are a bit crude compared to the real deal. This sword will not pass the sword inspection (I never had one, so I don’t know, but supposedly there is one) in the basic school in Quantico, VA. The blade I must say however is much more realistic than the Tempered and Forged Rockwell 48–52 HRC (According to the WK and C blades, the Marine Shop sells.) It seems to have more weight and heft. This wedding was so long ago so i don’t remember anything about the balance of the blades. (Cold Steels forging process often makes swords that are extremely durable, but notoriously unbalanced; think chopping blade.) Our swords also come blunted as we use them for ceremonial use. The Cold Steel is sharpened. Personally I thought it was a bit crazy using it for sword manual as a wrong move could have poked his eye out. But then again in the old days, people actually took these things into battle, and did sword manual with the same sharp blade.I have seen Marines (Officer and Enlisted) who purchase Chinese replicas. The quality is readily apparent, and I personally wouldn’t be caught dead using one The acid etch is not actually acid etch at all and is actually indentations into the blade in some versions. The scabbard is also not chrome plated. A good friend of mine attempting to save a buck has used his Chinese replica mameluke for years. Most of us only use our swords a handful of times. As an enlisted Marine, you used to see a couple of Chinese NCO swords being passed out to young Marines “voluntold” into the birthday ball sword detail. The volunteers are many times non NCOs. I remember having to do one as a LCpl, and the company gunny lent me one of his replica swords for this purpose. The fake NCO sword is a lot less noticeable in the fact that it is fake because of its leather scabbard. Myself being in a Combat Arms Specialty can probably count less than 10 times i’ve had to use one. But anyway hope this helps.Oh and to add and correct something I saw below. Yes people have used swords. I knew an officer who had his passed down by his father, this is authorized. (Another Marine Officer, they were of similar height in their day however, so it didn’t matter, but I am not sure how the Marines handle swords passed down swords if the two officers father and son have a large height disparity, as swords are fit in length to the user.) As for just purchasing a sword online with another persons named etched on it, I’m sure someone has done it, but really why would you? You go through plenty to get your Eagle, Globe, and Anchor, and the journey should be special to you. Less than 1% of the US population serves in the military on active duty, and of that 1%, less than 14% serve in the Marines, and there is an even smaller percentage of those who are Officers. Getting the right to wear a Mameluke shouldn’t be spoiled by the purchase of a cheap imitation or an ill fitting sword. Just my opinion. Oscar Tree Charlie, Out.
International Trade: What are possible fraud scenarios to watch out for in case of letter of credit based payment for imports from China?
Inspection of SGS is of two types - full container inspection and sample inspection. Full container inspection is very safe because they pick up random samples from the whole container and check the quality if all the samples are as per the requirement then SGS guarantees for the quality of the consignment but in case of sample certificate the same certificate will be issued but it would be written for the sample produced for inspection. So they don't guarantee anything. Full container inspection is very costly so if the container is of low value then the inspection conducted would be sample. So, I recommend to conduct a first inspection when the consignment arrives at the port in case the consignment does not match with the description then you have the right to disown the cargo and send it back.
Which documents shall I carry with me for a job interview in an IT company?
Ordinarily you don't need any documents for an interview. If there is something that they actually want to see, they would tell you at the time of making the invitation.Carrying in a folder of transcripts, certificates, letters and the like actually would make a negative impression. It would make you look insecure, or perhaps like someone who is so dishonest that he has to prove all of his statements. And no, they don't want to see samples of your work, or how well you can draw, or examination papers with A grades, or photographs of your family, or pictures from your summer vacation. The interview is all about you. They want to speak with and hear from you individually, not have you take them through some kind of presentation of prepared materials.Clean yourself up and dress especially well — but not showy — and make sure you have meticulous grooming. Then relax, smile, be spontaneous, and show yourself as a comfortable, friendly person. That will get you the job offer.
