PDF Editor FAQ

Is gun shooting fun? Is it worth trying it out?

Yes! And if you don't want to start with a firearm, try a quality pellet gun. I just got a Crossman break action spring piston pellet rifle (Barrel folds down to cock the rifle/compress the spring). It shoots very similarly to a .22 rifle, out to about 80 yards. This is a great fairly safe way to learn beginning shooting. I spent 2 hours the first day sighting it in (comes with a cheap scope) and plinking on the range. This is not a neighborhood back yard gun, but if you have a bit of property or a natural back stop, you don't need a huge amount of room. And it's very quiet, so it won't annoy the neighbors… but just dangerous enough to teach proper safety.Amazon.com : Crosman CF7SXS Fire .177 Break Barrel Air Rifle, Black : Sports & Outdoorshttps://www.amazon.com/Crosman-CF7SXS-Break-Barrel-Rifle/dp/B07Z9Z59QWI paid $119 at Dicks, so a better deal than this Amazon price. And pellets are cheap and plentiful, unlike real ammo right now.

What are some of the better brands and models of pellet rifles?

I have a BSA Meteor, which is 59 or so years old, which was very accurate and powerful, and a new one, which is accurate and powerful. Both are .22 caliber. The old one was used for squirrel hunting, and I killed hundreds of them, with a single pellet each. It was as effective on rabbit, but not as many were shot. My dad killed uncounted numbers of pigeons with it, but unlike the rabbits and squirrels, we didn't eat the flying rats. Sheridan and Benjamin made some fairly decent pellet guns, but they had to be pumped up. The BSAs were break action. My brother had a Sheridan, but the barrel came loose from it; the soldering failed. It was powerful and accurate, up till then. It was 5mm. Crossman made several in .177 caliber; I had a Powermaster 760 that would shoot a steel BB through both sides of a 5 gallon steel drum. Accuracy was good. Beeman made some good ones, but I never had one Gamo makes some that seem good, but I haven't had my hands on one. I'm sure there are brands I've missed or neglected to mention.

What is the best make of air rifles?

What is best depends on your budget, and what you want to do with it. Please forgive me if you are already familiar with the background info that I am about to pontificate on. You have three choices, assuming .177 or .22 caliber:CO2 cartridge gun. These guns use little metal cartridges of carbon dioxide to propel your projectile. The advantage is that there is no cocking involved and they can be inexpensive. The down side is that the muzzle velocity is going to be in the range of 200 ~ 300 FPS. You can spend a lot of money and get that up to perhaps 400 ~ 500 FPS.2. Multiple Pump gun. These guns use several pumps of a long lever to charge an internal cylinder with compressed air. Companies such as Crossman have made this style of air gun ubiquitous. The advantage is that you can realize high velocities, perhaps in the neighborhood 800 FPS (I am not sure about that number). The down side is that putting 10 pumps into the gun for each pellet is physically exhausting, and gets old fast. Also, the mechanism inherently prevents a consistent velocity for each shot which has a negative impact on accuracy. Prices are 'reasonable'.3. Single Pump spring gun. These guns are charged with a single cock of a lever which compresses a spring driven plunger. The lever is usually the barrel which breaks and pivots at the breach. The force required to cock the gun is not bad; much easier than the multiple pump type. Because the single cock returns the spring plunger to the same place every time, there is a very consistent velocity from shot to shot. The trigger pull is generally much better than the other types, which enhances accuracy. The muzzle velocities delivered by these guns is about 1,000 FPS or more, which delivers long range accuracy, and packs quite a punch if you are ridding the back yard of crows and such. The down side is that this type of gun is expensive; a quality gun is probably going to start at about $400, but consider that to be a very rough number. Here is the part where I finally answer your question, heh heh. I consider accuracy in any kind of gun to be of great importance, so I would never have anything other than type '3' from above, and that is after trying some specimens of the other two types. I did a lot of research before buying mine, and I ended up with a Beeman R10 (which is discontinued) in .177. I have never regretted buying that brand; it is nicely finished in every detail, it meets my expectations for accuracy, and the single pump mechanism keeps it fun. I have had it for about 26 years now, and it still works perfectly without any maintenance.Beeman is not the least expensive air gun available, but neither is it the most expensive, and I personally feel that it is well worth what I paid, which I recall was somewhere in the range of $500.
