The answer to this is universal to any interest or passion.I am interested in and passionate about many things:Music, composition and productionProgrammingMathsArt, creative writing, and cinematographyMartial artsVideo games (even though I don’t play them that much nowadays)Why? I’m not sure it matters or that they really are different when you take a step back.When it comes to programming, I’ve always been curious about how things work and how I can make things. As a kid I was always playing with lego. I spent a lot of time playing video games. I read some of my mother’s Virginia Andrew’s books (even though it took me 4 minutes to read each page).My grandfather had a lot of interesting books, and I would always be digging into them. One was about science, and I learned about things like motors, alternators, and the periodic table.Naturally I developed an interest in electronics and learning about IT (in books that consisted mostly hand-drawn watercolour illustrations).Being an avid gamer and designer I started sketching up game ideas. One of the books I came across explained how games were made. I already knew how to convert between binary and decimal, but one books showed me how to use that to draw a spaceship.Years later when I finally got my hands on a computer that had nothing on it. I prodded around and found two programs I could use to write code.And that was it.Children are very curious, but what we are interested and passionate about is pretty arbitrary when you really think about it. They are all means of survival.Music connects.Programming is a powerful skill for the creation of marketable value in the form of sellable programs, or sellable skills.Ditto for maths.Martial arts provides physical protectionVideo games feeds our feedback mechanisms for skill acquisition and practicingOur finite time on Earth give us a practical reason to limit our interests, which is an unconscious decision for most, but for people like me it’s much more conscious and pragmatic. I had to decide to spend less time performing to devote more time developing my Plan-A and Plan-B skillset (programming and administration).I still find live performance and Mathematics interesting, but couldn’t take degrees or make a career out of all of those subjects.

I stood on the top of the stairs, reapplying lipstick with the help of a pocket mirror I had brought in my purse. Below me, a mix of military and university students in elegant dresses and uniforms poured into the gymnasium, disappearing into the purple lights and electronic dance music pulsating from inside.My friend, Menka, was busy talking into her cell phone.“Okay, I see you guys,” she said with a laugh, waving her hand. “We’re at the top of the stairs!”I glanced down, and saw my date, Nate, walk out with Menka’s boyfriend. The two of them were dressed identically in starched white shirts, pants, and black belts. Their military pins were clipped to their chests.Nate looked up at me as I walked down the stairs. His eyes widened.“Wow,” he said. “Hey.”“Hey!” I said with a smile. “Sorry for being late. I just got back to campus.”“No problem,” Nate said. “You look…you look great.” He smiled, and held out a hand to help me down the rest of the steps.“Thanks,” I said with a laugh, holding up my skirt so I wouldn’t trip over the slinky fabric. I had bought my formal dress secondhand from Goodwill that weekend, and was wearing it thanks to Menka. She had been the one to tell me it was the perfect dress for the formal.“It’s definitely the one,” she had said, pointing at me with a grin as I scrutinized myself in the mirror of her dorm room. “Nate’s gonna go crazy.”Nate did seem to like the dress. I felt his eyes on me as I lead the group towards the door, and I felt butterflies in my stomach.I liked Nate. We had been dating for a few weeks, and I was excited to get to know him better at the dance.Inside, I immediately noticed how wild the party had become. The dance floor was packed, filled with students dancing and twirling about under the disco balls and glittering lights. A DJ was playing music at an ear-splitting volume, and before I knew it, Menka had dragged her boyfriend into the crowd and disappeared.Not ready to dance yet, Nate and I walked to a quieter part of the gymnasium and got some drinks.“So, how’s your week been so far?” I asked Nate. “What’ve you been up to?”“What? Oh! My week’s been good,” Nate said. He pulled out his cell phone and held it up to his ear. “I want my roommates to meet you.”“Oh,” I said, a little surprised. “Okay. If you want.”Nate nodded, distracted. “Hey, Kent? She’s here. We’re by the tables.”A minute later, another guy dressed exactly like Nate appeared. The military pin on his chest glittered.“Hey, man,” Nate said. He was smiling, and he held me forward. “This is the girl.”Nate’s friend stared at me, and then grinned. He looked up at Nate and nodded his head.“Nice,” he said. But as we finished our drinks and walked onto the dance floor, I noticed Nate’s friend nudge him and give him a thumbs up.The entire night, Nate spent the rest of the evening trying to get as many of his friends to see me as possible. While we were dancing, he kept on the lookout for anyone he recognized. When we were standing outside to cool off, his phone was glued to his ear, telling whoever would answer that they needed to come see me, right now.I met so many guys that night, their faces blended together into an unrecognizable mask. I didn’t get a chance to talk to them. Each grinned down at me, congratulated Nate, and then, before I could talk to any of them, Nate would whisk me away to find someone else.I didn’t get to have a real conversation with Nate. I didn’t really get to talk to him, period. And, by the end of the night, as Nate introduced me to yet another classmate, I began to suspect why Nate had invited me to the formal. It wasn’t to get to know me, or to have a fun time.It was to show me off.At the end of the evening, I admitted this to Menka as we walked home together. Our heels were in our hands, and we gingerly walked down the cool sidewalk on bare feet. It was almost one in the morning.“It was like I was arm candy, or something,” I told her.Menka shrugged her shoulders. “Don’t worry about it,” she said.And I didn’t worry about it. Nate texted me a few hours later, saying he had a really fun time. But that night, as I wiped the lipstick off my lips, I stared at my reflection in the mirror. My body, my face, my hair.I rubbed my eyes, shook my head, and switched off the light.Image Source
