But when I considered the institutions of the Spartans, I wondered no longer.Sparta was a militaristic state, and everyone agrees on that. Let us bring up some context first.Spartan boys who survived the birth inspections were called up for military training (like conscription) in the imfamous Agoge, where they were trained to be the finest and best. At a certain age, those who survived the imfamous Agoge were formally accepted into the army. The most excellent performing individuals (the top 3, if I am correct), were selected as members of the “Royal Spartans (the elite royal bodyguard)” as officers and were each allowed to choose a certain number of individuals to themselves serve as an ancient equivalent NCO’s.Afterwards, from the day of your graduation to the day that you reached (or rather, if you reached) 60, you were considered “done your life duty” and were allowed to return to Sparta. Every retired soldier received a plot of farmland as their own and would have helots work it for them, therefore amassing, over generations, huge sums of fat stacks. However, Spartan males over the age of 60 could be called up for service, but were usually near the bottom of the lists of males eligible for campaigns, and could expect to either lead peaceful lives on their farms or as veterans serving as the “police” of the helots in Sparta.Speaking of the helots, it’s known that the Spartans feared their slaves. The helots often rebelled against their Spartan overlords at times and often the Spartans would have to themselves afflict sharp lessons to their slaves and themselves. They were paranoid of rebellion.The Spartan Gerousia, or “Council”, comprised of the two kings of Sparta from the two Spartan royal families, and of 28 individuals over the age of 60, elected for life appointments in the body. They were tasked with making legislations and as court juries.The Ephors, another ruling body, was comprised of 5 individuals who each served for one year each, and shared ruling responsibility with the two kings, and were more powerful than the Gerousia. As recorded, whenever the king(s) went on campaign, two Ephors would accompany him/them and report of their activities.
