It depends on the country and the system for college entry.Where I am from in the UK, most candidate's entry is almost 100% based on exam grades, e.g. English A Levels and Scotland's SCE Higher Grade. There is an automated computer system called UCAS that matches candidates with their desired unis and college based on grades.Here in the USA, the main entrance criteria is a kindof IQ test called the SAT, the grade is a number out of 2400. Americans also have exams very similar to the British ones, but their purpose is not admissions but rather to exempt you from some 1st year college classes. These are called AP and last I checked they used numbers instead of letters, 5=A, 4=B, etc.For a mature student (i.e. someone not direct out of school) some universities will accept different qualifications, including life experiences.I don't know about India.
