Golf faces a significant challenge in adapting to changing demographics. Young people generally perceive the game as being too slow, too expensive, and too difficult. Many of them also perceive the game as taking up too much precious recreational land and too much water. Many people of color regard golf as the preserve of old white males and can’t excited about it in the way they can get enthused about the NBA or soccer as spectator sports.IMHO, golf and baseball are in roughly the same boat. Young people aren’t gravitating toward baseball, in large part because it is too slow and baseball diamonds take up too much real estate (so they don’t get built in the inner cities). It also has a bit of a fogey vibe, like golf.Personally, I love golf and baseball for just those reasons. They have a rhythm that facilitates the constant adjustment and readjustment of tactics. The dimensions of every baseball field are unique, just as the dimensions of every golf course are unique. In both baseball and golf you get to choose your own personalized weapon — your own bat or set of clubs.The USGA has been encouraging people to play 9 holes when they don’t have time to play all 18. That’s a good idea, but I doubt it will be enough to turn around the game’s decline. Tiger Woods gave golf a big boost in the early 2000s, and even though he’s back, he can’t carry the game forever. The game’s new stars, people like Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, and Justin Thomas, are all good guys, but to the casual observer they just look like frat boys. It would help a little if Rickie Fowler could win a couple of majors, but even that wouldn’t address the underlying fundamental issues.I think golf is going to undergo a shakeout that will ultimately “right size” it. There are too many golf courses right now; some of them will be forced to close. There will be fewer very casual golfers in the future. Those who do play will be, on average, more passionate and more determined. Golf will become more of a niche sport, and some young people will be attracted to it because it is an “analog” sport rather than a “digital” one. Playing golf shows that you have taste, and that you’ve made it.

As a tourist, you will spend as much on a holiday in Sweden as you would in Italy or France. Which is to say, you are looking at a premium price holiday destination with few special offers. I have to say that this question is begging in one dimension - which is ok but narrow. So there’s probably a very good answer to it, but it’s only going to appeal to a certain kind of international investor.Here in California, home of Hollywood and Silicon Valley as well as the Central Valley which is certainly in the top five agricultural producers on the planet, we already have more international investors than we know what to do with. There are so many wealthy foreigners in California that it almost defies belief. For example, my wife catered a party in Orange County where executives from a Japanese car company lived. Simply try to imagine a place like Beverly Hills full of millionaires where Japanese is their first language - and it’s kind of a well known ‘ghetto’ for wealthy Japanese tourists.Not many people remember what it was like in the mid 80s when Japanese investors were buying up American real estate, especially golf courses. Japanese used to own Rockefeller Center[1] in NYC. Well that wasn’t the first time and it won’t be the last. You have heard about a company called Samsung. The Pacific Rim is no joke. We get billions in Asian investment here in California and have been for decades. Recognize this logo?That’s owned by Sony. It says so right there. I live 5 miles from the studio. I know people who work there. I did a contract for them myself. And didn’t they just make one of the best Spiderman movies ever? Yes they did[2].So I’m saying international investment in America is already an old story. There’s more of it going on underneath your nose than you probably recognize.But I also want to say this. There are people here who want to make high speed rail a reality in California. I think it’s a complete waste of money. But there will be people who love the idea of more and more 20th century infrastructure, and so there will be investors in that. Narrow, one dimensional investing. OK Fine. After all, movies and automobiles are old 20th century tech too.Now consider the career of David Sinclair[3]. He’s an expert in longevity.
