PDF Editor FAQ

Can physicians get 1 year vacation?

An extended vacation is theoretically possible, but there's a lot to consider. A physician may need to take extended time away from work for health reasons, and other physicians might be willing to cover his/her patients in this circumstance. (Physicians are also willing to help cover when somebody goes away for military duty or on medical missions trips, etc.) However, a one year vacation might not be viewed in the same light. When taking a vacation, a physician must consider the continuity of patient care. If a physician is part of a group, a lot of the things that I will mention will not be of much consequence. However, for a solo physician or a physician with a unique skill or specialty in a community, the transition may not be as smooth. All of your patients will need to be notified that you were going to spend time away. You would also need to indicate which physicians have agreed to see your patients in your absence, for routine and emergency needs. Of course, it can take time to build a trusting doctor-patient relationship. For certain specialties, like psychiatry, an extended vacation could be quite disruptive. In the US, the patient would also need to ensure that the covering physician is in their insurance network; otherwise they may be subject to paying significantly higher fees for their care. If all of the patients of a vacationing physician are not notified in a timely fashion (based on local rules or licensing laws), that physician may be subject to discipline for patient abandonment. That could affect the physicians license and board certification. The vacationing physician would also need to consider the impact on their staff/office. A covering physician may require access to patient records. However, it would not make a lot of business sense to have the staff work full-time hours when a solo physician is away.If other physicians are doing you the favor of caring for your patients in your absence, you should be prepared to return the favor to them in the future. ( i.e. be prepared to work for the next few major holidays and multiple consecutive weekend calls)Depending on your specialty, a one year absence from practice may cause additional administrative burden. You may need to go through the credentialing process again with your local hospital, and each insurance plan that you contract with. For a specialist that does procedures, like surgery, there may be a requirement that you demonstrate that you are still proficient and competent in your surgical skills. You may be required to get another physician to proctor your cases, at your expense, for a defined period of time, before being allowed to fully get back into practice again. An extended time away might even require a "reentry" or retraining program, however, that might be unusual after just one year. Finally, an extended time away might affect your business and referral patterns. The returning doctor would need to contact all of the referring doctors that they are again available to provide patient care. Hopefully, your established referring relationships are strong. In summary, it is definitely possible, but not without repercussions. A one year vacation will have a a greater potential negative impact than a three month vacation.

In what way is getting an engineering degree from MIT different from getting an engineering degree anywhere else?

High school friends and I have compared notes over the years (I have an Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering degree from MIT).What they did in their (bachelor's + master's) I did in my bachelor's degree. What many schools teach in one year, MIT does in one semester -- which is why many students talk about their experience at MIT as "trying to drink from a fire hydrant."There's a lot of background emphasis on real-world problems and research and development at MIT. For instance, for Space Systems Engineering, a senior-year class -- probably the apex of all rocket science -- we as a class had to come up with a reusable launch vehicle to replace the aging NASA space shuttle program replete with specifics like reentry trajectory, heating function, amount of heat tiles, amount of fuel and so on needed. (I was part of the systems group and coordinated with other groups; my part was to create the computer simulation to do the reentry trajectory.) We (or rather representatives from our class) presented as one of three solutions to NASA and Orbital Sciences Corporation. Another time, one of our weekly Unified problem set challenges was something that NASA wanted from the MIT professors regarding the Pegasus rocket (we found out that NASA paid the profs $75k, they chopped it up into stuff we sophomores could handle and did a bunch of calculations, checked by the graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants, which then got bundled into a presentation). The professors are brilliant, some of them are Noble laureates. Some of them have fantastic stories. I had three professors who were Air Force Chief Scientists (Eugene Covert, Sheila Widnall, Daniel Hastings) and were very humble. The other professors used to tell us some of the stories like a helicopter arriving at MIT to pick up Professor Covert and whisking him to Washington, DC.The students are all pretty much cream of the crop and yet most of them don't have the ego to go with that. They're pretty humble and collaborative. I enjoyed my study groups / problem-set solving groups and learned a lot from that. Sometimes I'd arrive at the solution first, and by teaching/explaining the solution to others, it would really sink in. Other times, I'd learn from others how to tackle certain problems. The mathematical ability of MIT students is not to be understated or underestimated. They're REALLY good at plug-and-chug.It's a lot of work. MIT will push you to your limit (and you'll find out what your limits are). You'll learn a lot about humility -- including likelihood is good there are people better than you are in (whatever specific subject). These people will teach you, challenge you, push you, and some will even bring out your best. A number of these students are really good at their major and something else. In my major (Aeronautics and Astronautics), the three people with the top GPAs didn't go into Aeronautics or Astronautics. One went to med school and became a physician (ophthalmologist and assistant professor at the BU school of Medicine). The second did tap dancing on Broadway and eventually now works for Google in Tokyo (IPv6 Software Engineer).MIT is also more of a meritocracy than any other place I've been. Race, nationality, even gender have never been a dividing factor in my experience (I had Russian friends, Mexican friends, Nigerian friends, Canadian friends, American friends, Latino friends, African-American friends, Caucasian friends, Asian friends, etc. -- including people in my study groups who were these.)MIT is also a place where nerds can be nerds, and nerdiness is celebrated (it's much, much more than tolerated).

Why did scientific achievement of Soviet Union stall during Leonid Brezhnev's rule?

Brezhnev Leonid leader of the USSR (May 7, 1960 - July 15, 1964)Eighteen years of Leonid Brezhnev's reign were called "stagnation" and "golden age"What was created in science at that time in the USSR?Especially significant were the achievements of Soviet science in the field of theoretical and experimental physics (quantum electronics and laser technology), important discoveries in these areas belonged to A Prokhorov, N Basov, L Artsimovich, I Livshits , A Andreev and others.A wide scope of research has been received in various fields of chemistry and biology. Soviet scientists have succeeded in deciphering the protein structure, obtaining artificial genes (genetic engineering), and laser medicine. The results of most scientific developments were closely related to the development of defense and space technology and technologies, which in the 1970s. were the main direction of state policy in the field of scienceSPACE SHIP (KK) FOR THE PILOTED HUMAN FLIGHT ON THE EASY ORBIT, the single-seat Vostok-1, was created by a group of Soviet scientists and engineers led by Sergei Korolev.Yuri Gagarin was a Soviet pilot and cosmonaut. He was the first human to journey into outer space when his Vostok spacecraft completed an orbit of the Earth on 12 April 1961.1961 The missile defense complex with the B-1000 missile, was created in the USSR by the general designer Grigory Kisunko.1964 The first medical research in space conditions was conducted on the Soviet orbital ship Voskhod-1 by the Soviet physician Boris Egorov.1964 SPEED BOAT WITH UNDERWATER WINGS1961 Nikolai Basov - idea of using lasers for controlled thermonuclear fusionLev Landau a Soviet physicist who made fundamental contributions to many areas of theoretical physics. Landau received the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physics for his development of a mathematical theory of superfluidity that accounts for the properties of liquid helium II at a temperature below 2.17 K (−270.98 °C)."1964 Soviet physicists Nikolai Basov and Alexander Prokhorov for "fundamental work in the field of quantum electronics that led to the creation of generators and amplifiers on the laser-maser principle" was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics1964 The first space ship Voskhod-1 was launched into orbit1964 Invented the world's first nuclear installation "Romashka" for the direct conversion of nuclear energy into electrical energy.1964 For the first time in the world two artificial satellites "Electron" were brought into orbit by one carrier rocket.1965 Voskhod 2 was a Soviet manned space mission in March 1965 with two crew members on board, Pavel Belyayev and Alexey Leonov, was equipped with an inflatable airlock. It established another milestone in space exploration when Alexey Leonov became the first person to leave the spacecraft in a specialized spacesuit to conduct a 12-minute "spacewalk"1966 the launch of the Venera-3 spacecraft; On March 1, 1966, he reached the surface of Venus for the first time in the world.1966 The launch of the new generation Proton rocket with the Proton-1 heavy artificial earth satellite was launched; developed under the leadership of Chelomey.1966 The first Soviet automatic communications satellite Molniya-1 was launched. The first Soviet wide-body transport aircraft An-22 "Antey" was created. Aircraft Antonov. For the first time in history, the landing of the Luna-9 spacecraft on the lunar surface was carried out; The first photo of the lunar surface was transmitted to Earth. The unmanned launch of the first Soviet maneuvering spacecraft Soyuz was carried out.The first Soviet airplane with the Su-22I wing swept in flight was built. Aircraft designer Sukhoi.T-10 tokamak Transition to an all-metal wall was realized on T-10 by replacement of graphite limiters with tungsten ones. A new type of internal transport barrier in the narrow zone near q  =  1 surface has been found. The Mil V-12 (NATO reporting name: Homer) In May–June 1971, made a series of flights over Europe culminating in an appearance at the 29th Paris Air Show at Le Bourget. Records are certified by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale. The V-12 first prototype has held eight world records, four of which are still current, in the FAI E1 General class for rotorcraft powered by turbine engines. For the first time, two space satellites, Kosmos-186 and Kosmos-188, automatically docked in space.1967 Svyatoslav Fyodorov ophthalmologist Fyodorov In 1960 he developed an artificial crystalline lens and carried out the first-ever operation to implant an artificial lens.1974 - R-36 - ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and space launch vehicles (Tsyklon). It was able to carry three warheads and was the first Soviet MIRV (multiple independently targetable reentry vehicle) missile. The later version, the R-36M was produced under the GRAU and was given the NATO reporting name SS-18 Satan. This missile was viewed by certain United States analysts as giving the Soviet Union first strike advantage over the U.S., particularly because of its rapid silo-reload ability, very heavy throw weight and extremely large number of re-entry vehicles. Some versions of the R-36M were deployed with 10 warheads and up to 40 penetration aids and the missile's high throw-weight made it theoretically capable of carrying more warheads or penetration aids. Contemporary U.S. missiles, such as the Minuteman III, carried up to three warheads at most.Boris Petrovsky made several innovations in cardiac surgery—including introducing artificial circulation apparatus and inserting mitral valve prostheses without sutures He was a general surgeon who made several major contributions to cardiovascular surgery, transplant surgery, and oesophageal surgery. 1970 Petrovsky made an artificial pancreas,Leonid Kantorovich - Soviet mathematician and economist, known for his theory and development of techniques for the optimal allocation of resources. He is regarded as the founder of linear programming. He was the winner of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1975.Pyotr Kapitsa - was a leading Soviet physicist and Nobel laureate, best known for his work in low-temperature physics. In 1978, Kapitsa won the Nobel Prize in Physics "for his basic inventions and discoveries in the area of low-temperature physics"If you look at all the scientific inventions during the Brezhnev period, then probably you will not say that scientific achievements were not.Since the reign of Gorbachev, they are trying to distort what really happened during the reign of Brezhnev. I do not want to say that Brezhnev's time was very good or very bad, but during Gorbachev's reign it was very bad.During the reign of Brezhnev, the country developed in all spheres. The USSR entered the forefront in the exploration of outer space, the development of aviation, atomic energy, fundamental and applied sciences. Certain achievements have been observed in education, medicine, the social security system. In 1980, the Soviet Union ranked first in Europe and second in the world in terms of output of industry and agriculture. If in 1960 the volume of industrial production of the USSR in comparison with the USA made 55%, then in 20 years, in 1980, - already more than 80%. For 18 years of Brezhnev's rule, real incomes of the population have grown more than 1.5 times. The population of Russia in those years increased by 12 million people. Also, 162 million people were provided with free housing.
