Well, it’s been almost an year at IIT Ropar, So I think I am well equipped to answer this question.So starting with first to reach out here,1. Location & Connectivity :Ropar is just on a 1 hour ride from Chandigarh. It is well connected to major cities like Delhi, Shimla, Jalandhar, Chandigarh & most other parts of Northern India. Chandigarh itself is a very well developed city and is having an International Airport too so it is well connected to the other parts of India as well.Moreover, Ropar (or Rupnagar) is a peaceful and calm city. The city is located near major hill stations like Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala, Mussoorie etc. Our main campus is also at a scenic place on the foothills of Shivalik and on the banks of Sutlej river.2. Academics :Academics here is in line with the old IITs but with a New Curriculum specially designed by experts ( The Director is also an Ex.MIT Prof. ) with more focus on practical learning and labs. A salient feature of doing Minors, Honors or Concentration with the main stream B.Tech is the one the major highlights of the curriculum which is not there in old IITs.For example,you can have a B.Tech in Mechanical along with a Minor in Computer Science.Faculty: The selection procedure is at par with old IIT’s, period. Most have done there PhDs from International Universities many being from the US. Also, alot are graduates from elite Institutes like CS Faculty Dr.Apurva Mudgal is from IIT Bombay (AIR 7) and Dr.Puneet Goyal is IIT Delhi CS Grad and a Silver Medalist. Our current Director too was at IIT Madras from past 20 years.The faculty to student ratio is around 1:10 which is quite good. Also, the institute organizes regular workshops and guest lectures by experienced professors of various prestigious institutes.NOTE: IIT Ropar is ranked 1st in terms of Research citations among its counterpart IITs.3. Placements :Coming straight to the point, Currently average packages as told to me recently by my graduating seniors were around 16-17 lpa for Cse,around 12 lpa for Electrical and around 8-9 lpa for Mechanical. Moreover, we had around 40 companies for just a small batch of 120 students although Core companies are less as compared to Non core.The likes of Amazon, Goldman Sachs, Microsoft, Paypal, Flipkart, Directi, ISRO, Samsung, Mahindra, OYO, Reliance, Oracle and many more have regularly visited our campus for Internships as well as Placements.The CSE interested people may read the following ans by my senior & also do have a look at my friend Pranshu’s placement ans :Pratik Chhajer's answer to Which university has a better CSE branch: IIT Indore or the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar?4.Student Life :This is one of the most important thing for any student and our development as an individual. Many readers might be having doubt regarding this at IIT Ropar being a new IIT which is not new anymore, let me clear it.Currently we have a Student governing body named SAC (Student Activity Centre) very similar to Gymkhana’s in Old IITs.We have 5 Boards under it :-Board of Science & Technology (BOST) : This board handles all the Tech related Affairs and our Annual Technical fest Advitiya is under this board. It has the following established clubs under it and all of them stay active throughout the year, So if you are a Tech enthusiast then these clubs have a lot to offer.Coding ClubRobotics ClubFinance & Economics ClubPhoto & Video Editing/Animation Club (Monochrome)Astronomy Club (Zenith)CIM(Computer Integrated Manufacturing) ClubBoard of Cultural Affairs (BOCA) : This board handles all the Cultural related activities in the Institute. Our most successful fest Zeitgeist comes under this Board . So if you have any of the hobbies/interests which you couldn’t continue due the gruelling JEE preparations, now is the time and these clubs are always there to help you bring out the artist inside you. All the clubs stay active throughout the year. Also,we have a Dance room, Music Room, Arts room, Photography equipment room and a Hall dedicated to all the activities of the following clubs.Dance Club (D.Cypher)Dramatics Club (Undekha)Photography Club (Arturo)Music Club (Alankar)Fine Arts Club (Vibgyor)Board of Literary Affairs (BOLA) : This a newly formed board. All the Literary and Media Publication activities come under this board. The Board might be new but the clubs under it are well established and stay very active.Debating Society (DebSoc)Quizzing Club (Enigma)Movie Making Club (Alpha Productions)Kshitiz-The Official Student MagazinePrajwalam-The Official NewsletterApart from the above mentioned clubs we have 5 different Student Societies independent of any board :Enactus(stands for Entrepreneur Actions and Us) - Enactus is all about having a Startup by young enthusiastic college entrepreneurs. A business idea is designed by innovative minds targeting social problems of the society. Currently it has various ongoing projects uner it.BloodConnect - Aimed to improve the blood shortage in our society, started by IIT Delhi at our campus and we are still in touch. Organizing blood camps and creating awareness are the prime tasks of this society.Software Community - A newly formed Programming community of software developers. It is a group of developers who work on real world project to solve real world problems using AI, Machine Learning, Android apps etc.SME(Society of Mechanical Engineers) - Not just for mechanical guys but anyone can be a member of this society.IEEE SocietyAlso,We have a BAJA Sae-India Team which is building it’s own off road car to participate in BAJA in the upcoming year. Just google it and you’ll get to know about this mega event.Apart from these established clubs & societies, you may start one of your own if you have a great idea as the student body gives the freedom but will take time to establishBoard of Sports Affairs (BOSA) - The Board takes care of all the sports related activities at IIT Ropar. The Annual Sports Fest “AAROHAN” is under this Board. IIT Ropar provides all the sports facilities that are needed to satisfy the sportsperson inside you.Currently we are having a Cricket field, Football field, Atheltics Field, Basketball Court, Lawn Tennis Courts, Volleyball Courts, Badminton Courts, Table Tennis Tables and a Hockey field. It also handles all the celebrations on various festivals occurring throughout the year. It conducts ‘Samagam’ on various weekends which has some thrilling Inter Hostel events like Kabaddi, Tug of War and Cultural programs etc.Regarding current facilities available in our hostels:There is LAN Port for every student with high speed Internet. Free and Unlimited Wi-Fi is also present in hostels. The following is the screenshot of Lan speeds here-TV: All hostels have a common room with a TV installed there. Most of the matches be it cricket or football are enjoyed here :DA Laundry for washing clothes.Regarding Cafes at our campus,we have currently 3 of them :Campus café aka Cafeteria: Having most of the items packaged or cooked, Has a juice corner and also has a small canteen inside it for teas and South Indian food. You get everything here,a cool place to cut birthday cakes too.Dubey Cafe: A café cum canteen which is open till 2 am, serving pastas, sandwiches, maggi etc. and all other things you need .Coffee Day: Opened last year, it’s outlet is also there in the campus.Overall,Each board has its own funding from the institute and works independentely. Each Board is headed by its elected General Secretary and clubs headed by Club Representatives. The Student Council consists of 5 G.Secys headed by an elected President. This is our current student body structure but since the strength is increasing so in the coming session we might have a modified and expanded student senate just like parliament in old IITs. Its work is under process.Now,Let’s come to one of the amazing things in college life i.e. The Festivals aka FestsWe have 3 Annual Fests namely Zeitgeist (Cultural), Advitiya(Technical) and Aarohan(Sports).The festivals are organized solely by the institute and are totally free for the students.Apart from these, this year we organized BAJA Sae -India which is a thrilling all India level sporting event of cars made by different colleges across India and compete against each other in various tests and racing events.Sponsored by Mahindra,IIT Ropar takes immense pride in being the only IIT as one of its organizers.For a detailed outlook of Fests at IIT Ropar,Do Read my ans :Kamal Dhull's answer to How are the fests at IIT Ropar?4. Campus Life: So how’s our campus life or life at an IIT in general, I’ll tell based on my experience here.Do read :Kamal Dhull's answer to How is the campus life in IIT Ropar?5. Permanent Campus : I won’t brag about the great infrastructure that the campus is going to have or it’s world class ratings. Coming straight to the point about its current status, During my latest visit to the campus regarding some furniture finalizing, I can safely say The Lecture Halls, Hostels (both boys and girls), Dining Hall, Utility Block (the place for Cafe and SAC Rooms), Sports field like Basketball Court, Football Field are completely ready and that is why the shifting of my senior batches has already started.Do have a look at this ans by my friend :Anmol Rattan's answer to How is the new IIT Ropar permanent campus?Overall, I would say last year after cutting down all the best options available to me at my AIR 4165, I choose IIT Ropar Electrical above mediocre branches at old IITs or Cse at the newest IITs and till now I don't regret my choice.Cheers.EDIT : Mentorship website of my college is live now. Is this with the goal of being a journalist? At least in the US, your degree isn’t going to be as important as having demonstrated experience — like clips of stories you worked on. One advantage of attending an actual physical campus is there might be a campus newspaper or radio station or TV station where you get that kind of experience. You might be able to do that by interning at your local community paper or TV station or what have you, but the availability of such positions isn’t a given.I have a bachelor’s degree in journalism and I worked during my college years at the campus newspaper. If I had to do it over again, Id definitely still work at the campus paper but I’d major in something else, like business or criminal justice or computer science, and get knowledge about the things I ended up reporting on. The journalism classes are useful for some things, like learning about libel, but I believe it’s a trade and you learn it best by doing. And when you’re looking for jobs, if you have a journalism degree and Johnny Jones has, say, an English degree but also here are all the clips from when he covered Student Senate and did that pretty cool story about questionable spending and he can demonstrate he can write a story on deadline, Johnny is quite a bit more likely to get that job.
