My answer will be biased towards working in a C language based GSoC Organization like GNOME as I have experience working with it but I think it should very well apply to any organization using other programming languages.Regarding C, You should be well versed with the C language syntax and have good grasp of basic C concepts like pointers. You should also have a brief overview about memory management in C as it is something which open source softwares are overly concerned about (handling memory leakages) as C by itself does not provide automatic memory management the way other languages like Python, Java do. Best resource to learn C from this point of view would be: Learn C The Hard Way.First install any linux distro like Ubuntu, Fedora if you haven’t already.Then, you can start by developing some simple projects in C using API like GTK+ and writing some basic softwares like a text editor, calendar etc using it. By doing this, you will get a basic knowledge about how big open source projects are modularized into various files.After that learn how to use a version control system like Git. Try to make your own git project repositories and publish them on GitHub so that you learn about managing the changes to a software as you will go on developing it incrementally like making commits to it and then making patches out of those commits.Next step will be to select a GSoC Organization which uses C for developing it’s softwares. Some of the prominent organizations which use C are GNOME, Linux Foundation etc. You can explore more organizations here which use C language by looking at “technology” tags after selecting a particular organization.Start by reading the code base of a project and finally solving a few simple bugs in the project. You can also ask the project maintainers and developers for some simple bugs to get started with. This step may take a long time as it is difficult but not impossible for a newcomer to make sense of the entire code base in the initial stages. At the same time, if you are stuck somewhere don’t hesitate to ask questions to the project developers even if they are very silly. The important thing here is to stick to one project and keep regularly contributing to it. While contributing follow the coding style prescribed in the organization contribution guidelines. Also, try to keep possible GSoC mentors in contact while doing all this.Write a blog and post about all your learning and contribution experiences to keep up your motivation and share your insights with others in the process. Read the blogs of other contributors in your project to see how they deal with the various problems they encounter while making contributions.Final step is to just make a kick ass GSoC proposal which will surely stand out from all other students if you have contributed heavily to the project before GSoC proposal submission deadline which is generally in the month of March.If you are able to follow above sincerely, you can get selected in GSoC regardless of whether you are in first year or not.Best of Luck :)
