PDF Editor FAQ

What other things do people do simultaneously while using Quora?

1)Answer the door bell finally after waiting long enough for the wife to answer it.2)Get up and vacate the room when the maidservant comes in to sweep and wishing she hurries up.3)Keep peeping at the email alerts to see if there is anything important. Usually nothing is more important than Quora. The spam I receive in my emails is worse than some of the junk questions you see here on Quora.4)Keep saying, “just a minute”, for 5 or even 10 minutes when my wife calls me for lunch/dinner.5)Get up most reluctantly when my wife, watching TV, calls out from the drawing room “Come soon, you must watch this!” Usually it would have vanished from the screen by the time I manage to get up, push back the chair to see what was so interesting! I put on an irritated frown while she is busy not watching my face but has her eyes still glued to the TV screen.6)Answer the land line phone which rings frequently. 99 percent of the time, it’s not for me. No one calls me. They all send me private messages on Quora. I pass the receiver to her grumbling all the time why she doesn’t pick up when it’s mostly for her. She responds by asking why she cooks all the time when it’s me who eats most of it.7)Interrupt a busy Quora typing session to go down for the shopping errand my wife assigns to me at the grocery store in the ground floor of our apartment complex.8)Help her move the sofa from the north side of the drawing room to the east side and drag that almirah from one bed room to another where it already was just a month ago.8)Leave Quora minimized on my laptop, and chauffeur my wife around the locality I live in. While she is busy attending to banking, shopping etc. I sit inside the car in the parking lot and open Quora on my smart phone and don’t mind her taking her own sweet time, attending to really important tasks instead of “wasting time, writing stupid answers to stupid questions on Quora” as she maintains.Summary: While busy using Quora, I am simultaneously living my happily married retired life.GV

Have you ever acquired something very cheaply, and later found out it was extremely valuable?

I only shop in thrift stores, with the exception of Walmart (they don’t sell toilet paper in thrift stores) and Home Depot. My furniture, clothing, art collection dishes, etc etc are all “pre-owned.”I do this not only for the thrill of the bargain but because a thrift store will have a variety of items, from a vast period of time, from many different countries, that you cannot find anywhere else. A resale shop is like a time-capsule for shoppers.A few years ago, I bought an original ink drawing, in the original frame, for $5 at a thrift store. The drawing is by the famous Latvian-American artist Ben Shahn and its provenance is documented on the back of the frame with clearly aged type indicating it was a gift to a museum in Omaha, Nebraska.I do not know the exact value of the drawing, but I have been following auctions of Shahn’s work for several years and his prints sell for hundreds to thousands, and original drawings are relatively rare.I have received one estimate that the drawing, which is a throne erupting into Shahn’s famous Hebraic alphabet characters, may be worth well over a thousand dollars, tho it is fairly small.I have many other items worth 10 or 20 times what I paid for them, from hand-carved wood masks and figures to paintings and Navajo rugs, but the Shahn drawing is probably my best catch so far.I will mention one other item I got for free, a small salt-fired plate by the late ceramic artist Paul Solder (whom I studied under). One day, a few weeks before Christmas, he saw me preparing for a firing and asked me to fire about 20 small plates he intended to give as gifts. He told me I could take one of my choice. I did this for him and took what I thought was the best.Years later, needing some cash, I put it up on Ebay for auction, and it brought in $800. I do not miss it, as sharing an object of beauty is every bit as satisfying as owning it, especially when it helps out in a time of need.OK, one more: I bought a house (where I live today) in January of 2013 at the recession bottom price of $69,950, with 9 boarded up windows and a septic system which was not working. Two cash offers were ahead of me but both backed out…and so I acquired the property, a beautiful log house on an abandoned golf course. It cost $1200 to replace the broken windows with double pane, and the septic only needed a new tank, for another $1200.Today, the property just short of 6 years later, is worth about $220,000 and with a mortgage of $220 a month, I also rent out two airbnb spaces (a guest room and a trailer), which nets nearly $2000 a month and is actually fun to operate. So in terms of total value gain, this log house, which I dearly love, and which was bought as a distressed property at a heavily discounted price by the bank, has been my greatest purchase, and I will add that today, during a snow storm that has dumped 5 inches onto our high desert landscape, it is keeping me snug and warm while providing me enough income to depart for India for two months (while airbnb guests for two months co-host the trailer rental) for another of my great bargains, dental implants, which would cost perhaps $40,000 in the US, which will cost me about $3–5000 in Chennai, India, after which I will relax on a 33 day rail tour, spend some time at the beach, and return to my lovely log house just as the weather turns wonderful in March.Update: I am back from India, where I had dental work, with 5 implant screws, 3 crowns, one extraction, 2 scalings, and 2 bleachings for $1800. I also had PET scan (prescribed by an oncologist who charged $14 for the visit), which in the US costs $5000, for $378….all of which was done within 2 days of calling the hospital.I also bought some yak wool shawls, with tribal designs, for under $5 each (I see similar at Amazon for $69) in the Himalayan foothills at local shops. When I asked Indians about thrift or resale stores, they said they had never heard of such: India IS a thrift shop, with medical services (top quality) over 90% cheaper and samosas on the street selling for 10 cents. I had a very nice, modern, hotel with excellent service for $14 a night. Now I am back to thrifting at the local stores…..just having bought a small sewing machine (nearly new) in the box for $5 yesterday.
