Nothing turns people off more than desperate people needing relationships to be happy. Learn to be happy outside the relationship and you’ll be happy in it.Grace. Give the grace you want to receive. All of us screw up. Some of us, not mentioning names, more than others. All of us mess up our relationships sometimes. Oh, and the one’s thinking, “Not me” are the worst. So give grace and forgiveness. Everyone will be a lot happier.100%. Relationships aren’t 50/50. They’re not negotiations or contracts. It’s 2 people giving it all they have. If you keep waiting for the other person to act you’ll never have a relationship. So don’t keep score. Lose the game on purpose. Then you win.Space. Everyone needs sunshine. Everyone needs room to be themselves and grow. If you try to smother the other person they’ll grow restless or shrivel up. Give room. Let those you love stand in the sun too. It’s good for trees and people.Express. None of us ever get as much love as we’d like. We all want to feel wanted. And nothing says that like words and physical expressions of love. Give lots of both. Even if it feels corny. Frankly, no one will ever reject you for making them feel loved.Touch. Texting is fine sometimes. As long as you’re not driving. Phone calls are great. But nothing builds relationships like face-to-face. Looking someone in the eye, holding their hand, hugging them. Touching as you talk changes everything.Expectations. Have few. Ask for little. Offer a lot. Expectations are your dreams. Maybe not the dreams of those you love. Express what you’d like but never require it for the relationship. Expect little, offer much and you’ll never be disappointed.Walk. Sometimes the person just can’t connect with you. Or chooses not to. Sometimes the chemistry is wrong or they’re struggling with so many issues there’s just no room left. Sometimes you have to walk and find someone else who’ll value your relationship. I really hate “open book/open note” exams. OK, the students “think” we’re doing them a favour by allowing notes, but really we not. I typically teach undergrad Thermodynamics and Physical Chemistry. I write my exams so that students will not need calculators or “cheat-sheets”. ( I do allow slide-rules, but no student has ever used one on an exam.) For the most part, my exams focus on process and analysis rather than computation. How do you start from the basic assumptions of Thermo or Quantum and derive or explain “X”? The detailed calculations I save for problem sets.In so far as memorization, you really only need to memorize 1 or 2 equations for thermodynamics and perhaps 3–4 more for quantum mechanics.OK, here’s everything you need for my thermo exams.First law: dU = dq + dw = TdS - PdVLegendre transform: A = Mx + Bbasic differential analysis: chain rule, cycle rule, etc.For Quantum:Schrodinger Eq.Heisenberg relation [math][x,p]\ge \hbar/2[/math]Idempotent relation & Fourier Transform[math][a,a^\dagger] = 1[/math] for bosons and [math]\{c,c^\dagger\} = 1[/math] for fermions.
