PDF Editor FAQ

What are the top five operating expenses of colleges and universities?

I'm not expert with this type of organization, but will take a swing. As far as I'm aware, universities do not publish detailed financial statements which would conclusively answer your question. In the absence of that information, I will have to make a guess.I can say with relative certainty, that salaries and related payroll benefits (including health insurance, payroll taxes and other fringe benefits) would be the lion's share of expenses. Here is a breakdown of Harvard University's operating expenses, just to give you a flavor, which indicates nearly half of their expenses was spent on human resources. The cost of facilities would likely be number two on the list. This includes depreciation (i.e. the systematic write-off of capital investments in buildings, building improvements, furniture, fixtures, equipment, land improvements, leasehold improvements, etc.), leased facility costs, building and grounds maintenance costs, property taxes, utilities, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air condition) and electricity, and the like.Interest expense could be another big one, depending upon the financial health of their balance sheet. Of course the financially healthier the entity (i.e. little to no debt), the less pronounced this expense becomes. A financially troubled university could have a very large interest expense.I'd be guessing without any solid basis, if I were to speculate at numbers four and five on the list (so I'm going to end here)Hope this provides some perspective.

What is the rate of depreciation on an air conditioner?

if it is HVAC system, the life is 25 years. So initial depreciation is high, later tapers down slowlyIf it is windows / split air conditioner (stand alone) its life is considered to be 7 years. Say 10–15% depreciationRefer to the taxation laws in your country which provide all these information in greater detail for every office has to do this exercise when finalizing the balance sheet.Find detailed information at weblink https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p527.pdf

Do air conditioners bring in fresh air from outside?

No, Aircon by itself is never designed to bring in fresh air from outside.Air conditioner is a sealed system to bring cool pressurized refrigerant through the evaporator cooling coils through your room whereby the air is cooled through a blower. In a typical bedroom split unit, air is pulled in through the evaporator coil and blown out through the lower vents. This means that the air inside your room is recirculated and will get more and more stale as time passes by unless the door is opened to ventilate. But it is not as bad as say, inside a totally 100% air-sealed space shuttle which need fresh oxygen (using liquid oxygen or LOX), cabin pressure system, CO2 scrubbers (LiOH) and air purifiers etc,. LOLWhen aircon is installed inside your bedroom room for instance (assuming your windows are completely air tight), the blower unit will still suck in fresh air from outside through leakages from your doors but only in small amount. This small amount of fresh air is actually not sufficient and healthy if you stay inside the room for too long.To bring in adequate fresh air from outside, your room need to be deliberately designed or set up, else you will have to ventilate your room occasionally to bring in fresh air and oxygen while venting out the stale air that is low in oxygen.Fresh air circulation is relative to heat presence inside the room.Think of your room to function like an air tunnel design similar to a PC cooling fan setup for maximum cooling efficiency. There must be equal air inlet and outlet at opposite ends of the room, to create a balance of pressure which air (with oxygen) gets circulated properly. This is how supermarkets HVAC are designed, with both inlets to bring in fresh air and outside to vent out the customer’s and raw meat and fresh produce smell, lol. However in practical ways for homes, in order to reduce power consumption and maintain the desired aircon temperature, the air intake and outlet size should of course be minimized to balance power consumption and ventilation. The mistake some people make is to open a window too wide which results in an overworked aircon compressor which never shuts off and thereby increases power consumption and its service life. The best design for bed rooms is two windows each and each corner of the room slightly opened( less than an inch) , this is to accommodate the wind direction which tend blow in through your house/room like a wind tunnel. This is sufficient for two or less persons inside a typical bedroom. Of course with more persons, there’ll be more CO2 and more frequent venting will be required.Just like a PC casing (assuming non-liquid cooling), if there is only a single intake and outlet vents near the back and top, then your CPU/harddisks and components which are at the front end will tend to have higher temperature. So normally for my bedroom, I will open about a quarter of an inch for both windows, which will allow ventilation while minimizing stress on the aircon compressor. In some boat aircon system design, you can see that there is both an inlet and outlet air vent at opposite sides of the cabin, which you can access for cleaning. This is because unlike houses, the air inside boat cabin can get stale real fast like a sealed tomb or closet when it is not in use. Some rooms for instance have tiny trickle vents from the top which are able to bring in fresh air from outside. But you’ll still need to create an outlet somewhere.Hence this is the reason why when you visit someone else’s room whom had hardly clean nor wash their bed-sheets, it stinks like a Gerbil cage, lol.For normal bedrooms without specially designed vents, there are always some leakages through the doors, that should normally be good enough for a safe night’s sleep. However, if you don’t like to open you windows slightly during a night’s sleep due to whatever reasons (security/ insects, lack of mesh) the room should always be ventilated occasionally when the aircon is not in use or when you feel that the room air is stale. This is to vent out the any stale, dirty air and carbon dioxide outside while bringing fresh air with oxygen into your room.
