This goes over all of the different topics that we will cover during the course. It is meant to be a brief overview to introduce students to each topic. Students are expected to review this fully before their first day.Weeks 1 - 4: Skills Assessment of Pre-Training ResourcesFor the first four weeks we will go over all of the pre-training curriculum in depth. This will be extremely fast paced as it is expected that students are at least somewhat familiar with each topic before showing up.Weeks 5 - 8: Capstone ProjectStudents will be working in teams designing, building and shipping a real full stack application. This exposes them to real world examples of the type of work that will be expected of them after graduation.Every pull-request that students make will have to pass a rigorous code review by our senior engineering staff. This helps students learn best practices around application architecture, JavaScript design patterns, build tooling, testing and clean code.Weeks 9 - 12: Open Source ApprenticeshipWe have reached out to the maintainers of a variety of open source projects and put together a list of projects that need student help. Each student will choose one of these projects. They will then spend their last four weeks making meaningful contributions to their chosen project guided by Pesto teachers and the projects maintainers.

With its extreme right wing Hindutva ideology BJP as a choice for the voter was a either “I love it or I hate it” party. The assessment of BJP’s future growth was - with the voters having already made their choices - “either BJP and its allies in the NDA or the others” - the assumptions were there were no more peaks to conquer, as the states and constituencies that had not elected BJP would largely remain outside its grasp. The party however has belied all such opinions and has continued to conquer more peaks.To understand how they are conquering new electoral territories, it is important to understand the new BJP under Narendra Modi. His style of working, his strategic astuteness and his ability to pick the right person for a job.Understanding Narendra Modi “The leader-in-waiting”Narendra Modi became a full time member of the RSS at the age of 21 in 1971. Prior to his joining RSS, he had left home and travelled all over the country including many important religious centres to understand India and its diverse demography. He was assigned several important responsibilities in the organization. He came under the mentorship of L K Advani, after he was assigned to BJP in 1985. He was one of the important members who helped organise Advani’s Rath Yatra In 1990 to highlight the demand for construction of Sri Ram temple at Ayodhya. The Rath Yatra gave such positive visibility to the frustrated Hindus, who had started feeling alienated with the Congress for its minority appeasement politics. With many Hindus voting for the BJP, the party increased its seats from 85 in 1989 to 120 in 1991. Modi, was a key member of Advani’s inner circle and was emerging as a key strategist. He became Advani’s protege by virtue of his hard work, strategic inputs and dedication to the party.It is important to note that Narendra Modi did not hold an elected office until 2001, when he replaced Keshub Bhai Patel. He had a 30 years long apprenticeship - 14 in one of the most disciplined cadre based political organisations and the next 16 years in a political party that shared the ideology of RSS and is an equally disciplined organization. Both RSS and BJP have established programs for training their cadres on various aspects of political management, strategy development and implementation. With Advani’s thrust on hardcore Hindutva and on Ramajanmabhoomi had resulted in BJP starting to make its presence felt all across the country. One could even have said at that time that BJP was well on the way to becoming a viable alternative to the Congress.Modi's Apprenticeship was during the phase when BJP as a political party was continuously refining its political strategies and steadily gaining acceptance with the electorate. A level headed person who had his own clear vision for India couldn’t have asked for a better training place to learn his skills and at a better time in a rapidly growing political party.Narendra Modi the Chief Minister of GujaratNarendra Modi replaced an ailing Keshubhai Patel as Gujarat CM in 2001. Gujarat, with its vibrant business community has always been one of the most prosperous states. Modi transformed the state by his administration through all round development. His government attracted large investments in manufacturing, created self help groups among rural women folks, established cooperative bodies in communities like fishermen, came up with innovative policies like covering irrigation channels with solar panels to prevent evaporation of water and at the same time generated electricity that was supplied to the neighboring villages. The Gujarat government undertook massive afforestation programs in dry areas like Kutch that used to face drought year after year. His government helped improve the life of the people of Gujrat.Modi the visionary leader and able administrator had arrived.Amit Shah - The Super StrategistA young and energetic 23 year old Amit Shah was deputed from ABVP to BJP in 1987. He was assigned to work with Modi. Modi quickly recognised Shah’s strategic strengths and organisational abilities and took Shah under his wings. This was the beginning of a strong partnership that has achieved unimaginable political success in the history of independent India. The two teamed up to not only transform Gujarat, but also built a strong party in the state that would go from strength to strength.Shah, hailing from a business community, has emerged as a master strategist and an ally of Modi who translates the strategies into efficient implementation.A potent Duo with proven organisational and administrative abilities had established their credentials.Building the BJP Organisation - Top Down and Bottoms Up - A corporate training approachAmit Shah, after he took over as party president in 2014, started a series of training programs. K Muralidhara Rao was put in charge. The objective of the training programs were to train party workers right from the booth level to Members of Parliament and Legislative bodies. The party has also devised leadership programs at different levels. By January 2019, the party had trained 1.5 million of its members (Ref: Economic Times - 09-01-2019).BJP has become a political party with a corporatised organisation and established training programs.MembershipBJP is the largest political party in the world. The party has 18 crore members in 2019. With 90 crores registered voters, BJP has one member for every five voters.The party has ensured that there was at least one member of a family who was its party member.BJP’s Formula for Electoral SuccessTo a casual observer BJP is “just another political party”. It undergoes the same trials and tribulations that any political party goes through. Like all political parties it backs only “winning horses”. It is a party that has shed itanfoumding guiding principles.Has the party given up all semblance of ideology for grabbing power? One can take an analogy from the corporate sector to explain the party’s present strategy.A Business House is always looking to increase sales of its products. To achieve this objective, the company, depending on ground realities in the territories that it plans to expand, works out different strategies. It could acquire an existing brand that has a dominating presence in a territory and promote its products on the strength of the strong local brand. Another strategy would be to heavily advertise its products in a new territory. One other strategy could be to take over a strong local product and slowly replace it with its own product.BJP’s political strategy too is similar to Corporate strategy. It has aligned with strong local parties like the Akali Dal, JDU and Shiv Sena in Punjab, Bihar and Maharashtra. It has adopted the same strategy in the eastern states - Meghalaya, Sikkim, Assam, Tripura, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur. In West Bengal it is going through the advertisement route - in political parlance it is agitating on issues, it is poaching on rival party strong candidates and acquiring cadres who were earlier loyal to the communist parties. In TN it is trying to induct a top cine actor. These startegies are for expanding its territory.The next step is establishing the organisation structure, recruitment of members and putting its training machinery in place in the new territories.This has helped BJP spread its tentacles in hitherto unconquered states like the 7 eastern states. It has also helped BJP retake a major state like UP on 2017 where it was out of power since 1993.Election Performance of A Cadre Based Party with a Large Grassroots level membershipWhen a political party builds a cadre based organization with a large grassroots level membership base it will always remain in the fringes of power if not in power. The reasons are not difficult to understand.Large member base in states where it is already one of the bigger parties: One in five voters are its members and each member can influence at least 2 more in their social circle. This is the reason BJP has polled more than 50% votes in the states that it has dominated earlier. This is has been BJP’s strategy in UP, MP, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Karnataka, Uttaranchal, Haryana, Delhi, etcTie up with strong local parties and Acquire and back “Winnable Candidates”: The strategy adopted in the eastern states, where it was almost non-existent a few years back. It is adopting a similar startergy in WB.BJP has been steadily gaining strength because of this well thought out strategy and an organization that effectively translates strategy into effective action.Having such an extensive organisation set up will BJP never lose elections?A political party which takes election victories for granted will bite the dust in the hands of its bosses - the electorate. The voters are the kings in a democracy.Congress is a prime example of a dominant political party which has now been reduced to a pale shadow of its earlier Avatar because of complacency and taking voters for granted. After the ascension of Indira, the party steadily gave up all the good practices of a Democratic Party mistakenly assuming that the Nehru-Gandhi brand will be adequate to keep it in power forever. BJP on the other hand, since its registration in 1980, has been steadily building its party organization, expanding its grassroots cadres, training the cadre on political and leadership skills. Even though it has penetrated deep into the grassroots, it will still face minor electoral setbacks. Examples are MP and Chattisgarh, where it lost the state assembly elections after being in power for 15 years. However, it will always remain a major influential force which will not face the decimation that has befallen Congress because of its cadres and corporate structure.Having achieved unprecedented dominance in this year’s Loksabha elections, minor and temporary dips in its fortunes are to be expected. Hence, answering the question, will it suffer a setback after Maharashtra, Yes it will, as Sena, NCP and Congress seem to have come to an unholy understanding. However, BJP will eventually gain on the strength of its cadre and decision not to stake claim to form the government.
