Every organization completes its own evaluation, so it is possible that a degree evaluated from ICES may be valued differently than the same degree evaluated by CES.Many people choose to complete their evaluation with World Education Services (WES) as their instructions are straightforward and they usually complete the ECA report faster than any of the other organizations. It takes WES approximately 20-business days to complete the ECA report after all documents are received, where some of the other organizations may take several months. Based on the popularity of WES’ services, we have written our money saving tips specifically for individuals working with this organization, but you can always choose to work with one of the other organizations if you’d prefer.Please note that those with degrees in medicine must complete their ECA report with the Medical Council of Canada and those with pharmacy degrees must complete their ECA report with Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada, respectively.ECA Report ProcessIn order to obtain an ECA report from WES an applicant must create a profile online and submit information about the educational credentials. The applicant will then be asked to make a payment to WES in order to begin the evaluation. One this has been completed, WES will issue a list of documents required for the evaluation. The applicant must arrange for these documents to be mailed to WES in hard copy for the evaluation.Below are our tips and tricks for saving some money on this evaluation!Money Saving Tip #1 - Be sure to select the correct report!When you sign up for an account on the WES website, you will be asked to select which type of report you want:(1) WES Standard Application, or(2) ECA Application for IRCC.Be sure that you select the second option, ECA Application for IRCC. This option will be cheaper than the standard application, plus it ensures that a copy of your report is sent directly to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).Money Saving Tip #2 - Select Standard Shipping!When you are selecting a delivery option you will have two choices for shipping:(1) Standard Mail via Canada Post – $7.00, or(2) International Courier (UPS or TNT based on country) – $85.00To save money select the first option for Standard Mail shipping. This means that the hard copy of your report will be mailed with a much slower option and that there will be no tracking on the report, so if it is lost in the post there will be very little you can do. But, as per their current policy, when WES completes your evaluation they will give you an electronic PDF version of the ECA Report. The Express Entry system for immigration only ever requires this PDF version, you do not need the hard copy. For this reason, we suggest that you save on the shipping for the hard copy and select the cheaper option!Money Saving Tip #3 - Don’t bother sending the report to additional recipients!When you complete the report with WES they will automatically send a copy to IRCC. Other than this, you do not need to send a copy of the ECA report to any additional recipients. As mentioned above, you will receive an electronic PDF version of the report when it’s complete – simply keep this PDF on file in case you need the ECA report in the future. If anyone requests it you can send them the PDF!Money Saving Tip #4 - Evaluate all higher education at the same time!If you have multiple degrees in your higher education, you can evaluate them all at the same time to save some money. WES charges their rates per individual application, not per degree, so if you submit both a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree for evaluation then you will be charged the same amount for the ECA report as if you had only submitted the Master’s Degree. But, if you submit only the Master’s Degree for evaluation and then a few months or years later you decide you want an ECA for your Bachelor’s Degree as well, then you will be charged the full amount for a new ECA report.Money Saving Tip #5 - Your spouse may not require the ECA report!Depending on which program you are applying to, your spouse may or may not require the ECA report. Canada’s Express Entry – Federal Skilled Worker program does not require an ECA report for the spouse. Express Entry awards up to 10 points (out of a maximum of 1200 points) to a family’s Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) Score if the spouse submits a valid ECA, so the ECA will be an advantage, but only a small one.
