It should come as no surprise to anyone reading this who knows how powerful that sense of both bonding and belonging can be with alumni and classmates of one’s institution.But let me be more specific here.In the job application, interviewing and hiring process, it is very common for alumni of a given university to favor those applicants from their alma maters, for those whom they view as their own. And that often even extends to the final decisions made on who to hire and who to reject.This to me, is nothing but a form of nepotism. That it is a socially acceptable one does not make it one bit less so in my eyes. To me it is no different than favoring somebody based on the fact that they have a common race, gender or national origin with oneself.When students from my former universities reach out to me to learn about the industry or my firm, or even for advice, I give it freely. But I do that in the same measure for anybody, no matter what school they may be from.This is not even just a matter of fairness or even-handedness.No, it is also that as an employee of the firm where I work, my first allegiance is to them. And not to my former schools. It is my ethical duty to see that the best candidates and applicants are hired into the firm, whether they are from my schools or any other is entirely irrelevant to me. Truth be told, many a time students from top universities like the ones I attended can have a sense of entitlement because top firms do have those kinds of ‘old boys/girls club’ and my firm is no exception, when it comes to both of the universities I am from.The senior finance director who I report to as well as the chief of the fast-track executive program which I am a member of are both from one of my former universities (The University of Pennsylvania a.k.a. Penn). And several other executives are from my other university (The University of North Carolina). I cannot overstate the advantages that come with that and I am thankful for them (because obviously I can’t say to senior executives “Well sir, don’t be extra friendly with me just because we graduated from the same institution!”). But if I see someone who is not from a top-ranked university take the initiative to reach out, and put in the effort, I find it all the more laudable.As for the giving back part, no, I am not concerned with doing that to my former schools. Because they have both been gripped by the madness of social justice, forgetting their true vocation and I’ll be damned to have one cent of my money go towards hiring even greater numbers of rubbish administrators like directors of diversity and other such troublemakers.If I must give any large sum of money in the future to an institution, it will ironically be to such a school as Caltech, one which let alone having attended, I have never even stepped foot on their campus. But to me that institution is a shining example of what the academy ought to be like. No affirmative action and more importantly, no legacy admissions. For all of the controversy about affirmative action, it is amusing to me how much of a free pass legacy admissions get (in comparative terms). Because if you are born to a parent/s who are Harvard or Yale alumni, you are in most cases already starting out life with a massive leg up in terms of wealth, rearing environment and even IQ. No, it is a disgrace then for you to be given a further advantage even after all of that.And you might find it interesting that with Caltech, when it completely abolished legacy admissions a few years ago, the donations by alumni actually went up. Which says volumes about not only that institution but also of the kind of students it produces. A tree is to be judged by the quality of its fruit.That attitude of mine once again of not donating any money to my alma mater/s, I can most definitely assure you it isn’t one bit popular with my former classmates who would regard me as a ungrateful SOB.But fair is fair. I’m not a student anymore. I owe my loyalty now to my employer and as for my money, the choice is made not based on who will scratch my back (or those of my future kids) but on the institutions which in my opinion act with integrity, irrespective of whether I studied at them or not.

If you come across one of these ignoramuses, stand up for yourself and your peers, and rattle of this list of legit reasons we don’t intern (backed by data).Internships require a massive amount of resources (i.e. money and time).You must pay your university to intern “legally.”Ever wonder why employers require you to get college credit for their unpaid internship?If you’re thinking: To cover their asses and not get sued; you’re correct.Let’s walk through the cost of my own internship experience in college.I attended University of Central Florida (UCF), one of the least expensive public 4-year universities around, but I had to drop out because I just couldn’t afford it.Let’s forget about tuition, and just review UCF’s cost per credit hour, which is $212 per hour. Now, consider that typically one college course (or internship) is worth between 3–4 credit hours.$212 x 3.5 credit hours = $742 (for 1 unpaid internship)As a journalism student, my program required that I complete an internship or two. Here’s how they decided on how many credit hours the internship I did was worth:Credit HoursStudents may obtain internships in the Fall, Spring and Summer C semesters. No internship credit will be given in Summer A or B terms. To be exact, 91% of companies expect grads to have 1–2 internships on their resumes, even though the majority of them rarely hire their interns.And, honestly, why would they hire (i.e. pay) you when they can replace you with a new wildly motivated freshman, who is just dying to gain experience and totally willing to work for free — just like you were and did. This is how we intern ourselves out of jobs, BTW.Stats prove that the minority of students, who do intern, are able to because their families have the resources to support them so they don’t have to pay their own bills.According to Intern Bridge, 64% of students report they’d have to work a SECOND job if they accepted an unpaid internship (in addition to their college workload). And only 35% of students report their parents would help them financially if they chose to undertake an unpaid internship.Therefore, it’s exceptionally fair to claim that unpaid internships contribute to making wealthy students wealthier and poor students poorer. Why? Because employers are always going to hire the graduate with professional experience for their full-time job, and wealthier students are the ones able to participate in these unpaid internships.There’s a massive skills gap between someone with internship experience who has practice before entering the workplace and the student whose first job is also their first practical work experience.A college degree does NOT guarantee you’ll get a good job. In fact, the majority of grads are underemployed or unemployed.A college degree by itself is NOT going to get you a job. This isn’t my opinion. It’s a cold-hard (and fucked up) fact.Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that 48% of employed U.S. college grads are in jobs that require less than a four-year degree.”It’s a huge problem because students think a degree is going to get them a job. They think an internship is going to get them a job,” Dan Schawbel, NY Times and WSJ Bestselling Author and Freelanship advisor, says. “Then employers are requiring these internships, but they’re not hiring their interns. The economic cards are stacked such that today’s average college student, without support from financial aid and family resources, would need to complete 48 hours of minimum-wage work a week to pay for his courses — a feat that would require superhuman endurance, or maybe a time machine.”And according to Randy Olson, a postdoctoral researcher working at the University of Pennsylvania Institute for Biomedical Informatics, it’s impossible to work your way through college nowadays.Modern students have to work as much as 6x longer to pay for college than 30 years ago. Given the reports that a growing number of college students are working minimum wage jobs, this spells serious trouble for any student who hopes to work their way through college without any additional support.Let’s crunch a few more numbers to see what a typical year would look like for a student in 1979 and 2013 working her way through college. Most students take 12 credit hours per semester and only attend Fall and Spring semester. That’s 24 credit hours per year.The 1979 student would have to work about 10 weeks at a part-time job (203 hours) — basically, they could pay for tuition just by working part-time over the Summer. In contrast, the 2013 student would have to work for 35 ½ weeks (1420 hours) — over half the year — at a full-time job to pay for the same number of credit hours. If you’ve ever attended college full-time, you know that this is basically impossible.Fun fact: If over the past three decades car prices had gone up as fast as tuition, the average new car would cost more than $80,000.The Blame Game: Who’s responsible here?I’ll say what everyone else won’t: It’s not young people. Either way, though, kryptonite gives the villain an easy advantage over Superman and if a villain understands how it works, he could strategically use its effects to defeat the man of steel. Oh, and don’t forget the cost of online internship ads, which aren’t cheap (Again, money they could allocate to you, but don’t).The Government: The people who are supposed to protect us are in one of the rogues. So it’s not surprising that they provide zero protection for interns. Their reasoning is that interns aren’t considered employees since that’d be illegal to not pay an employee. On top of this, regulators aren’t implementing any (literally ZERO) firm laws and regulations around internships.Let’s RewindI want to repeat the numbers I shared with you at the very beginning of this post because they’re important.There's 83 million of us “Millennials currently. I come at this question as a parent of a child who was in reverse isolation for much of her elementary school years. That is, she could not be exposed to anyone who even had a cold, because it would have turned into pneumonia and collapsed her lungs, and scarred them further. So I had a medically fragile child and am a parent who was/is very protective of the health of my child. I had to withdraw her from public school and register her in Carlson Home Health Hospital School each time she had pneumonia or a cold (about every two weeks when she first began in public school). Then, she missed out being in public school for months at a time as she fought to breathe, and I homeschooled her (Carlson was not providing an adequate curriculum nor enough teaching time with the same teacher, in my opinion; her public and Carlson curriculum completely lacked coordination with each other).That said, the way the question as asked makes it almost impossible to answer for the following reason: which side is "right" in the case of Colman Chadam cannot be determined without more information.Did both children have IEPs? What the IEP team determines with the consultation of medical staff KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT BOTH CHILDREN's particular cases would provide directives. As it was vaguely reported, "They made this decision without seeing one medical record on my son," Jennifer Chadam said. "We were shocked and dismayed."[1]Even if both children didn't have IEPs, one (the asymptomatic student) should have been given a 504 so that accommodations could be considered. These would also need to be evaluated by doctors expert in communicable diseases and knowledgeable about this particular student with familiarity with his particular medical record.An "abundance of caution" is not a legal standard, and in fact can stigmatize and discriminate against a student who may have, -- or WHO IS REGARDED AS having a disability, as in the case of Colman Chadam.[2]How to handle such a conflict? Except for asking a judge to make a declaratory judgment, the present legal situation does not provide for an adequate method IMO.I would like to see an objective third party ombudsperson selected by both sides or by a judge from a list of experts. I would like to give both sets of parents and their attorneys, and the school and its attorneys, the right to select a medical / legal ombudsperson to evaluate all information relevant -- and come to a decision which would take into account the needs of both students. Each agency is responsible for enforcing its own regulations. Section 504 may also be enforced through private lawsuits.
