In medieval settings, when swords are made, Hollywood loves to show you molten aluminum (which they want you to believe is some sort of iron) being poured into an open-topped stone cast. This is not just inaccurate, it is wrong every way it is possible to be wrong. It is so wrong that even a moment’s consideration will reveal how stupid it is.Look at this smith wasting enough Valyrian steel—the most expensive metal in the world—to make a couple of extra daggers.Let's look at all the ways it is wrong:An open-topped cast will only give you something that looks like a sword on one side. Are you then going to grind it down? There are no powered grinding machines in these settings, and what a waste of metal that would be! Maybe you'll take it to the forge to beat it into shape? Then what was the point of casting it in the first place?A stone mold has too high heat conductivity and too high of a specific heat capacity to pour molten metal into. It will suck all the heat out of the metal and cause it to solidify prematurely. Usually casting is done in thinnish molds (of iron, steel, or graphite) which cannot absorb much of the heat, and the low thermal conductivity of air takes care of heat loss. Stone may also suffer more thermal fatigue or worse, thermal shock, which may cause it to crack during the casting, adding imperfections to the resulting cast.A slow pour not only magnifies the problems of uneven cooling the stone cast creates (leading to an extra brittle final product), it also does not allow the metal to settle into the cast completely (which means it will have the wrong shape) and does not give the trapped gases time to escape (and bubbles are weaknesses). Even if you use a proper 3D cast with a high specific heat material, you'll still want to pour the metal quickly.Molten iron is bright white. That is the only color it can be at a temperature hot enough to cast with. If the molten metal is yellow, it's probably aluminum, which has a much lower melting point. It's also a lot softer than steel and would make a terrible sword. The GoT clip above is definitely using aluminum. (I'll admit this is a minor quibble, since most people wouldn't notice, but it's also really easy to fix—just recolor the footage to add some blue hue and the metal will appear the right color. Or better, don't even use molten metal casting.)Worst of all is the fact that casting, no matter how you do it, will produce a terrible, brittle sword. A sword must be forged. The forging process not only ensures the blade has the correct shape (even down to the general arrangement of molecules) without wasting metal and removes flaws and weaknesses, it also allows the blade to be hardened and tempered, reducing the carbon content of the steel to the perfect balance of hardness and pliability.So yeah, watch that video (the main source for this info):Addendum: There’s been some discussion about the colors of molten metal in the comments. Cristian Ariel Rodriguez provides the following image of molten steel:Notice how much brighter/whiter it is than the molten aluminum depicted above. This is because molten steel used for casting is around 3000°F (1650°C), while molten aluminum for casting is only around 1350°F (730°C). The temperature is essentially the only thing that determines the color a metal glows, whether solid or liquid.

A butter burger is a hamburger patty that has been molded around a pat of butter. The idea is that as the patty cooks the butter melts and creates a pocket of rich buttery goodness in the center of the burger. The best results come when you incorporate flavorful ingredients into the butter like garlic, herbs, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, etc. You can use your imagination and create a really unique flavor using the butter burger technique.Here’s what you do: soften some butter and mix in your flavorings. Let’s say chopped garlic, blue cheese and a little Worcestershire sauce. Mix them until well combined and form them into a log on top of a piece of waxed paper. Now roll the butter log up in the waxed paper and refrigerate.Grab as much ground beef as you would normally use for a hamburger patty and divide it in half. Press both halves into a thin patty and set a couple of slices of your chilled blue cheese butter on top of one. Place the other half on top of the buttered one and seal the edges well.
