Is it true that "everyone's hiring practices are broken," as a New York software developer contends, with little to support various interviewing techniques and all the popular hiring metrics used?

I’ve been recruiting and hiring for over twenty years. I’ve been on the agency side and the corporate side, and been a manager/leader of recruiting for small, medium and large companies. The article by Rajiv Prabhakar linked HERE is quite accurate.I’ve said in the past, many times, that recruiting is “broken.” Usually I’m referring to the more structural aspect of hiring—but it’s entirely true that even the philosophical underpinnings of what we do have very little basis in either matching or predictive validity. There are a lot of aspects to recruiting that need to be fixed—but I think this article is actually (appropriately) focusing on “employee selection methods.”It’s been long-known among industrial/organizational psychologists that interviews are very unreliable employee selection tools. Structured interviews fare slightly better. The tool that has the best-researched outcome is a “work product test” or “work sample test.” That shouldn’t surprise anyone, since it most closely approximates actually doing the work you want to be done!Controversially, IQ also has a strong predictive value for some roles. Other assessments that involve relevant work-related skills can at least be objective and well-researched—which can at least “tighten up” the employee selection process (be careful, a TON of assessments out there aren’t well-researched).Personality tests are widely used—but not correctly used.I’d love to write a book about this, but Dr. Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic has (more or less) already written it: The Talent Delusion. It’s well-researched, properly cited, and both critical and interestingly written. Reading other answers of mine here at Quora should give you some insights into some of the problems (and solutions) that I’d propose. The short answer is that we incorporate multiple assessment methods into our selection process—and preferably multiple STRONG assessments. The REAL solution is invasive and costly—and presumably the current process is “good enough” in comparison to those costs to ignore it. Or maybe nobody has really educated our leaders well enough about the problems and they just assume that this is as good as it gets!(If anyone is aware of a company that is really doing employee-selection well, let me know. I’m defining “well,” as having a strong candidate experience, giving the selection process a basis in science which has strong predictive validity, and which is efficient.)

What do you dislike about the current state of programming? Note that I am not asking for problems in specific languages, like Java or Haskell, but more about what you dislike about our current tools and the way we program.

My two cents. A lot of people here talked about certain visible aspect of programmer culture, like fads, machismo, dogmatism, and prevalence of unsubstantiated claims. In my opinion these things are symptoms. The underlying cause, in my opinion, is that most programmers are actually conservative and reactionary. The most upvoted answer here is about how annoying a lot of programmers are, because they tend to push some new, fashionable thing. Isn't that a bit odd? If most programmers are so enamoured with fashionable new technologies, shouldn't these answers be very unpopular? Or is the sample of programmers on Quora so heavily biased towards sensible and pragmatic ones? What bothers me the most, is how most programmers I've interacted with and most software development teams I've worked with refused to accept the human side of their work, while focusing on old and by now irrelevant argument tropes. OOP vs FP! TDD vs DDD! Typed vs Untyped! The whole “JavaScript is a bad language” trope is a brilliant example. JavaScript is untyped, has some quirks, but most importantly has first-class functions and lexical scoping, meaning you can implement most language features you need. It has its niche applications, where it's a good fit. What else is there to discus? Yet the flame wars rage on.Most software projects I've encountered both professionally and as an amateur programmer have had the same problems, which are totally unrelated to the above arguments. For example:Documentation either doesn't exist or is very bad. In fact, my hypothesis about popularity of OSS projects is that it is driven not by the technology it encompasses, but by the quality of its documentation.Software not portable across environments. The software equivalent of the reproducibility crisis.Dependency-mania and coupling. A few years back I was looking for a Ruby library for date calculations. I needed to write a small maintenance script. The most popular one at the time had ActiveRecord (and consequently RoR) as a dependency…Most software is bad in adjusting with business or organizational changes. New head developer? Rewrite everything, because predecessor’s code is incomprehensible. New feature requirement? Remodel the whole architecture, because we've assumed this feature will never be requested. Etc.Software projects are notoriously prone to major delays. And so on. Which of these problems are solved by deciding for a functional programming language or an OO language? None. Which of these problems are solved by being clear of all the JavaScript quirks? None. The problem is, that these problems originate in team dynamics. Some technologies and languages are better in enabling team work, some are worse. For example, in my opinion .Net languages are good for team work. MSDN is brilliant, C# and F# allow you to produce comlrehendable and shareable code. On the other hand, languages like Ruby or Lisp are more “personal”. Dependent on your team, they might make it more challenging for members to work together. For example, through undisciplined use of monkey patching and macros. Yet people talk about these technical features, ignoring “human features”.On the other hand, a lot of personal and emotional problems in developer teams are often suppressed and then get dressed up as tech discussions. For example, ambitious young programmer wanting to leave her mark pushes for a change in the product. She proposes to achieve that using algorithm X. Older colleagues feel threatened by her ambition, but are ashamed to discuss this openly, hence they criticize X as much as they can. At some point their criticism of X takes on the life of its own in the organization and turns into a trope. In my opinion, good developer teams listen to each other, are often aware of their own groupthink, and are aware of their dynamics. Too into fads? Maybe we should try being more down to earth. Havent used anything besides Java for a long time? Maybe we are missing out on better tech. Religiously SCRUMy? Maybe we're overdoing it. One developer dominating all meetings? Maybe our meeting roles need readjusting. But instead of figuring these things out, most programmers focus on comfortable things they are familiar with. Favorite language. Favorite tool. Favorite trite programming dogmas. Favorite complaints.
