When applying for a driver’s license in Michigan. They said since my birth certificate was from Scotland I had to have it translated into English. I told them I already had. My response was that a great many Scots these days speak fluent English.

This isn’t exactly a police stop, but it’s a similar enough situation that I feel the need to write it here. In the early-90s, we had some family friends who were driving from upstate New York, through Canada and Michigan, to their home in Illinois. In total, it was about a 12-hour drive.Six hours into the trip, at the second CA-US border crossing (to re-enter the states,) the border patrol agent was asking the usual questions (where are you coming from, did you buy anything in Canada, etc.) and the 8 year-old in the backseat gets bored. To add a little excitement to the otherwise dull situation, he decides to blurt out “THESE AREN’T MY PARENTS!”And this is about the time that everyone involved started having a bad day.The agent politely asked the parents to show him the kids’ birth certificates to prove that what he heard was not true. Since it was the early 90s, carrying birth certificates was just a recommended practice, and not usually necessary to cross the border. Therefore, they were not in the car. At this point, several additional agents with weapons drawn surrounded the vehicle. The family was directed to pull the vehicle to the side, after which they were taken inside to a holding room to discuss the situation further.To make a long story short, a neighbor ended up having to drive 6 hours from Chicago, IL to Port Huron, MI to deliver two pieces of paper, turn around, and drive back home. Once delivered, the family was able to drive the additional 6 hours home. All told, the 12-hour trip took almost 20.And the 8 year old was grounded.
