Hi,This is actually a very interesting question, and I discussed this with a friend of mine not that long ago.So, first thing that is important to understand is that there's racism in Europe also. But mostly of a different type. In the USA they seem to need to focus on the “race” issue much more than in the European countries I've visited so far. In Europe the focus is much more on Nationality than Race.I've traveled through many countries in Europe and North Africa before ever visiting the USA. However, it was only when I first visited the USA, I was asked on the emigration forms if I was white, latino, African American, … I don't remember the exact “races” on the form) … the question puzzled me…and it was the first time that I was faced with that question. The immediate reaction: “why do you care? that's none of your business!” But even the question for me didn't make sense…afterall, I'm white and come from what I consider a Latin country (Portugal), what do you want me to put on the form? But the surprising thing was why did they cared?Anyway, in Europe we tend to me more Xenophobic instead, we fear the evil foreigners… indifferent of the color of their skin. Obviously there's exceptions, but I suppose this is partially due to centuries/millennia of wars between us… they made us a bit suspicious. That's why the EU is so important, it makes those European foreigners less foreigner because we get to meet them and trade with them. Naturally, as soon as we meet the foreign national individuals personally things change and people start ignoring nationality.There's an interesting map that illustrates this issue:On right hand side map you can see in darker color the regions where people support UKIP. This is a right wing party in he UK (frequently associated with racist statements) and on the left hand side map you can see in darker color the regions where there's more foreign born population. At the same time, you can see this other map which shows the regions who voted for Brexit:Notice how the regions who voted for Brexit and supported UKIP there where very few foreign born population? This is a fairly good example of Xenophobic behaviour​ (obviously I'm not saying that everyone who voted Brexit is Xenophobic, but there's a correlation).In the USA you somehow still focus on the race issue, perhaps there's a lower social mobility and equality in the USA, so people who were once (decades and centuries ago) members of underprivileged sectors of society don't get a chance to move away from them.As there seems to be an irrational fear of anything that sounds like social politics in the USA (all because of those evil “children eating socialists”) this makes the issue much harder to solve.There’s also a famous chart that illustrates this issue (relates inequality and inter-generational mobility), and countries such as the US are relatively poorly positioned (compared to the other countries in the study).Great Gatsby curve - WikipediaSo, the ultimate consequence is that if you are from a “race” that was historically marginalized, you (and your children) are less likely to be successfull if there’s no social policies that make things more equal. It doesn’t mean that you as an individual can’t succeed, but it means that statistically, the whole group is less likely to succeed. The selection process for an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) is an extremely rigorous process that requires quite a lot of preparation. I'll speak majorly about Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Calcutta, but the rest of the IIMs follow a very similar pattern of selection.The First Stage : The Common Aptitude Test (CAT)The first step to getting admitted to an IIM is writing the CAT (or even the GMAT for foreign nationals). The CAT is a highly competitive exam that is given by approximately 1.96 lakh candidates.All candidates appearing for the exam are obviously not students (as the article incorrectly mentions), but are also composed of candidates with work experience. The purpose of the CAT is to sift out candidates for the final interview, where they are called. (Aside: The etymology of this is very interesting. Candidates were actually called on their phones before the internet existed. Now calls are communicated through email and mail).The CAT is composed of two sections, the Quantitative Aptitude/Data Interpretation and the Verbal Ability/Logical Reasoning. Work experience will always serve as a good talking point, as it would be academics or extra curricular activities for fresh graduates. You can use it as a very good plank to put your case forward as to what you can bring to the institute, how you can contribute to the learning process and how your experience makes you well equipped to pick up what is taught.The Final Stage : ConversionEvery institute has certain criteria for selection, where your CAT score, academic history and your interview are taken into consideration to select you. Most institutes incorporate the work experience but explicitly in the final selection, or it may come across through a good interview score. Using the admission criteria (as I have mentioned above for IIM A as an example) a list is drawn and the candidates are finally selected.It's a great feeling to feel once you're here, trust me.All in all, I would say make your experiences your own, make the interviewer live through them and be earnest. Be it work experience or no work experience, you can always show why you are a good candidate. I would say that you should be honest about yourself, your ambitions, your failings and in your efforts.
