The story of Colombus strikes me as a pretty good example. When I was a child, Colombus was presented as an intrepid explorer who wanted to prove the world was round. After convincing the King and Queen of Spain to invest in his expedition, he braved all sorts of tribulations to reach the New World. Although mistaken in his belief that he had reached India, he was credited with discovering North America. In elementary school and junior high, Colombus was presented as a benevolent figure and one of the great explorers of Old Europe.

Typical midwestern US memories:Food: It was still an era dominated by mass-produced, mass-marketed, highly-processed name-brand foodstuffs, most of them loaded with artificial and not particularly healthy ingredients. As inflation soared, generic foods started to become more popular. “Natural” and “organic” were still pretty rare unless you lived close to one of the few food co-ops that had sprung up in the late 1960s. Home vegetable gardening did start to stage a comeback in the middle of the decade as inflation roared and “Crocket’s Victory Garden” went on the air. Ethnic food was limited to Mexican, Italian, or Chinese, and often not all that authentic.Clothing: It was an era of ridiculous styles, especially for men but also to a lesser extent for women. The swing of the pendulum back to classic styles started late in the decade with the Preppie/Yuppie fad.Housing and architecture Split-foyer houses were the stereotypical design inflicted on homebuyers in the 1970s - usually with avocado shag carpet and harvest gold kitchen appliances! It was also peak ugliness for commercial and institutional architecture as well. The hippie era had launched the movement toward a greater appreciation for a softer, more natural, and human-scaled style, but this was still mostly on the fringes during this time frame.Transportation: The decade started out with everyone driving huge chrome-plated gas-guzzlers. Then the energy crisis hit. By the end of the decade, small Japanese cars were in hot demand, and Detroit was in freefall as their lame attempts to compete in the compact car market - Ford Pinto, AMC Gremlin, etc. - were failures. People were trying to avoid high gas prices by switching to mass transit at the same time as mass transit was being cut back everywhere, making for very crowded, slow, unreliable, and unpleasant commutes. Passenger rail was almost killed off but survived as a mere shadow of its former self through Amtrak. The Pride of America and the Queen of the Skies - PanAm - was slowly killed off with Juan Tripp out of the way. As air travel was deregulated late in the decade it got more affordable - but also more crowded and a lot less classy. Ocean liners became a memory. So did hitch-hiking as stories of ghastly crimes started to circulate. So did kids walking or riding their bikes to school, for the same reason.Communication & Entertainment: At the start of the decade, letter writing was still a fairly common practice, but gradually faded. Long-distance phone calls were still expensive, and people would keep a little egg timer by the phone. You didn’t own your telephone, the phone company did, and you paid monthly rent - but those phones were built like tanks. There were no cell phones, but pay phones were literally everywhere. Western Union was still (barely) in business, and sending a telegram was something that people still did on special occasions - news of a death, or congratulations for something. Radio was wrapping up a move to FM, and AM was increasingly ignored and relegated to cheap news-talk formats. Most people had or would be getting color TVs, and some households started having more than just one set. It was still pretty much just the big three networks, plus the new PBS (rebranded from the old educational television), plus maybe one or two independent stations. The programming got just a little bit better, To get a feel both for what TV was like and life was like back then, watch the old Mary Tyler Moore episodes. The move from old downtown theaters to new ones out in the suburbs, often in or near the malls, was pretty much completed in the 1970s. The movies themselves tended to have better production values and amazing special effects, were often a lot edgier and explored more socially relevant and difficult themes, and mindless musical entertainment became less common. LP records were still the thing through the decade, although cassette tapes were becoming more popular as newer cars included players.Education: The Baby Boom had ended in the mid-1960s, so throughout the 1970s enrollments in elementary schools were declining at the same time that they were booming in colleges. The first half of the decade was the wind-down to the Vietnam War protests and the end of the Hippie era, and things were pretty turbulent. Things tended to settle down a little and students tended to get more serious and competitive as the economy was not doing well and employment after college became increasingly uncertain.Health Care: Probably the most noticeable thing was that nurses increasingly stopped wearing the white uniforms. The doctor’s house call became a distant memory - you ALWAYS had to go to their office. High-tech equipment became increasingly common. A big change is that people started to become more concerned about their own fitness and health. Eating healthy food was no longer the exclusive trait of “health nuts.” Working out at the gym was no longer something that only body-builders did. Walking and jogging regularly for exercise became a thing. At the same time, more people got serious about stopping smoking, while non-smokers insisted on their rights to breathe clean air, and the smoking bans started to appear - few at first, but gradually more and more.

I am quite busy with loads of homework.Since I’m in college now, I’ll speak about my experiences as a Canadian High schooler and the huge differences:What most people and young kids do not realize about high school is that:High school is the era where you discover your identity, or in other words your sense of belonging. High school is the era part of teenagehood where you discover who you will become. You might become the next athlete, the next Student Council President, the next valedictorian, the next Model UN, etc. YOU DISCOVER YOU!Things that make you cool now in high school will be irrelevant years later. People are busy and don’t care about you. They care about themselves and their career success.Not every teacher knows what they’re teaching in High School, sometimes. There are some good teachers who are passionate about their job that they know what they’re teaching, and then there’s some who just got an education Master degree and don’t know what the hell they are teaching.High School parties are fun, but not fun later on. Most teenagers go to parties to get drunk and possibly to have sex, but when you’re about to hit College/University, your grades are on you for your future career.The workload is easier than College. High Schoolers and other kids think High School has so much homework… Oh boy! Wait till you go to College and University, the workload is 10x worst (I’m exaggerating the numbers.)Friendships are created. You make a ton of new friends or even best friends in high school than elementary school since most people want to become friends with people that like them.Strive your best to aim for high (or average) marks. GPA, Grades, Scores do matter! It may not matter for you, however, if you want to go to one of those outstanding schools, you must work your hardest since there's application competition.What you study in high school, you will mostly forget it in College. I legit forgot what I learnt in high school about science.You hang out with friends more in H.S than College. College equals more independence that you do not have time for hangouts with friends.Stupid High School dramas will be irrelevant in 10 years from now. “Wait, Jessica cheated with Cole by some douchebag and got pregnant?” Nobody cares in 10 years from now…People are busy with their lives.Teachers are there to help you. TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY OF TEACHERS!! Most high school teachers I had were able to help me correct my rough copy of my essays early and gave me feedback. In College, it's a whole different experience. Teachers can not correct your essays early, so if you have the opportunity to get your corrected essays early or feedback early, ask for help and use the teacher resources.High school has school activities all year round. Participate in extracurriculars, clubs, or after school activities. Trust me, you will enjoy high school if you joined some extracurriculars. I joined the Yearbook Committee as (somewhat) head of the Committee and President of the Student Council and I really enjoyed it. Activities help you create friendships and make you enjoy school even more! P.S, it also helps you to become more social which is a great essential skill in life!!The portraying of the ideal High school doesn’t exist in movies. High school doesn’t have the nerds that dressed in huge glasses and braces. High School movies are not the same in real life. Everyone has their own high school story.Some of your classmates have already lost their virginity or had sex already. High Schoolers tend to explore sex at a very young age… It’s quite normal. Very normal, relax. Teenagers are discovering their identity and are curious about trying things. Oh Hormones!High School may be slow in your eyes…But the reality is, it’s going really fast. You may hate high school now, but once you go somewhere after High school, you will realize high school has gone by too fast.High school doesn't help you with how to do your taxes, what you want to become, how to deal with credit cards, mortgages, rent, bills, how to deal with real-life scenarios. There are so many things in life I wished High school would teach kids how to do real life stuff instead of this or that. We, as humans are programmed to go to school and learn subjects that the society and government had placed us since birth. We in a way are acting like robots.High school is a joke. Literally. The workload isn’t as bad as Cegep/College/university. Many people can pass high school with a breeze.High School (Senior) Prom is where people have fun, then the after prom is all about sex baby, and drinking. I think this is self-explanatory.There are many high school haters around you if you’re mean, so be nice to everyone. There's hate everywhere, my friend. Not everyone is gonna love or like you. I guess this is life.Some students can get away with cheating in high school exams and tests. I don’t know how, but they surely have many tricks upon their sleeves.You have many friends in High School. After H.S, you find your real friends. Sorry to be a bummer, but in High school, you make many friends. After High School is done, you will find your real friends. Friends come and go as they say.Visiting your High School after you graduated, is cringe-worthy. Ah high school, I missed you so much! Oh wait, the weird memories are coming back……. *blushes*High School relationships don’t last long. Some high school relationships do last long, while some end very shortly. Choose wisely your relationship.Lastly,High school is the time where you enjoy the most of your teenagehood. Enjoy it while it last. YOLO.Anyways, I wish you the best in High School. So I’ve seen a couple of students in my grad group came into Graduation high… like you can tell they’re high because the way they spoke to you.80% (if not more/less) of students in your school don’t care about High School after Graduation, while there’s about 20% of students who actually cared about High School. Pretty much. Almost everybody in my High School was happy to get out of High School because they don’t have to deal with snakes in my grade but also don’t have to deal with people’s bullcrap drama and whatnots.There will always be people that will show off to you no matter what. So I didn’t win many scholarships and awards and there was a couple of people that I know that won many scholarships and awards that they kept showing it off to the class of 2018 and other people. I can tell they show off because I saw it on their expression on their faces, they smirked and was very proud that they won many awards to represent their race/culture and such.High School is memories for some, while others think of High School as hell. Very true. Why do you think some people wanted to get out of there so badly.While many people graduated, there are some who failed and wants to graduate with you and their peers. sad. This is why you better focus on finishing your High School degree, in order to do whatever you desired after High School is over. You don’t want to be that lonely person who doesn’t graduate with your friends to the point where your friends are happy while you’re miserable. Everyone has a different point of view on this.Whatever you do in high school, don’t trust anyone…I mean ANYONE. I had some drug dealers, JUUL sellers, Creepers, Drama-Attention seekers, Weirdos, Gamers, Drama-Queens, probably some prostitutes in my grade and they all did one thing that they regret at one point in High School. At one point in my high school, there was a girl who got expelled for selling drugs at one student and that one student had a seizure from the drug. Beware.Whatever happens after High School, stays there. Most people won’t care much, basically. People live their life however they want. They live what they wanna live, They do what they want, and the majority of their high schooler peers won’t care much.Job expectations vs Reality. Those that received honours and valedictorians and received many awards tended to do well in school and have better jobs (and some are show-offs) while those that party a lot and spend their time not focusing on school tend to do okay or worse in life and jobs. It really depends on the person, their jobs, their aspiration and their situation. Basically, our entire year in High School was never sing-alongs and the perfect cute couples.
