Let’s put things in perspective.Up until 2006 hunting & sports firearms were freely available in Belgium, without any registration. After all, the Ardennes have some of the best wild life (especially wild boar) hunting in Western Europe. Mind you, we are talking proper hunting weapons (you know, over-and-under or bolt-action) and sports weapons (biathlon-style), so no AR-15s and the likes.Then, in May of that year two (yes, two) people were killed in a Belgium’s only school shooting to date (touch wood). A shortened hunting shotgun was used.The law was changed almost overnight. Now all firearms are subject to registration, and only licensed hunters (people who are allowed to hunt outside of a private property) and licensed sports shooters can own or operate them. By the way, it’s very hard to get your hunter’s licence. You have to be highly motivated, and demonstrate wildlife awareness and knowledge that is akin to a field biologist’s. And any application that is filed out of the blue, without any hunting community references, is treated with utmost suspicion. The licence is up for renewal every 5 years.Permitted sports weapons are such small-bore that they can hardly be used for hunting small game, much less lethally wound people. So in Belgium, if you want to legally obtain anything more lethal than a pea shooter, you will have to be damn good at faking a credible hunter profile. And even if you are, you will only be shooting guns which really belong in the 19th century.Yes, firearm crimes still occur in Belgium, but at a minuscule fraction of US statistics, and when they do, the weapons used are bound to be illegal. And illegal weapons leave traces, all the way up to a criminal outfit or a terrorist organisation. In the US, those traces invariably lead to a smiling lady behind a Walmart check-out counter.On a final note, I understand it is still possible to legally acquire and own military-grade firearms in Belgium. Let’s not forget that Belgium - through its FN factories (FN Herstal - Wikipedia, the owner of Browning) - is one the world’s leading manufacturers of (semi-)automatic rifles and sidearms. However, you’ll need the personal, written approval of your friggin’ provincial governor. And I doubt that he/she will be taking any political risks over the backyard-Delta-Force aspirations of a single voter, as these things were made for the likes of NRA gun fare visitors, not for Belgian civil society.To conclude in the sarcastically gung-ho tone of many of the answers: Belgians couldn’t care less about Americans shooting each other up with Belgian state-of-the-art hardware, as long as they pay on delivery (they may not be around long enough to settle a 30 day invoice).

It actually would be reasonable to a point although as previously stated gun ownership is a constitutional right, though there are laws in place that do already restrict gun ownership such as a felony conviction. It would be logical though to expect gun owners to prove their familiarity with the gun they own, be proficient in it's maintainance, care, safety, and use, also prove a safe, secure place to store it, in the form of a license or permit which can be revoked for lack of ability to provide proof of violations/behaivior that would give reason to revoke ownership. Also, renewal of such permit with providing gun for inspection and severe penalties for not reporting lost or stolen guns or change of ownership. Penalties for guns owned without permit should be heavily enforced as well, I believe a person who is scared to drive should not be driving, they will not react properly, be an obstical or irritant to others drivers and overreact to emergency situations. A gun owner should not own a gun out of fear, nor be fearful of guns, they will overreact or underreact/hesitate when tested, their aim will be greatly in question, and motivation unreasonable risking the living of anyone around them.
