The more confident you are today, the more confident you will be tomorrow. The reality of course is that I was there for their business.About a year ago, I started a new sales role at my new company in a completely new industry (wealth management and offshore structuring) that I came into about a year ago with absolutely no prior experience. Sure, I have a decent CV and decent school brands [3] and great experience in other industries (corporate law (but importantly not trust law)) that sound impressive, but I had zero knowledge or background in my current industry when I started.In sales, it doesn't matter. Intelligence and technical knowledge do not matter in sales. Sure, you have to understand the product enough to sound like an expert and to explain it in layman terms (not always easy), but in the end you don't need to sweat the details.It took me a year to learn that. I wasted 9 months trying to slowly learn and retain the technical knowledge, then I realized I'm a sales guy and my job is to make sales--not design, structure, or fully understand the product.When I was a junior lawyer fresh out of law school, I used to believe that the partners I worked for at Vault 50 Wall St firms were all brilliant. Then I learned it's really just deep experience + acting cocksure.Most "geniuses" are just uber experienced and uber sure of themselves [4]. Steve Jobs was an asshole who was too stupid to treat his own cancer for two years, but he was confident. Now, he's considered one of the greatest businesspersons of our age.Now, these days, I am a full-blown douchebag [5] with all the swagger in the world. Of course, a lot of this is probably overcompensating for various subconscious insecurities or past humiliations, but then again, I could care less.I generally have the loudest laugh in the room.** Even (perhaps especially) in rooms or conference halls of 300+ people. I've been told you can hear my laugh in the adjacent hall. This is not something I was born with. This is something I have deliberately worked and am still working to acquire. When I am in a room, I want people to notice me and to notice how fucking happy I am and how I don't give a shit who hears the expressions of my mirth and joviality.People notice. Some are attracted to it. Some are repulsed and think I am just peacocking or correctly assume that I am a self-indulgent douchebag.Confidence is not caring. Confidence is not kowtowing to anyone unless you are getting something out of it--in which case I'm not sure it's really kowtowing anymore, it's more like getting paid for a service or partaking in an exchange. When ultra-rich clients ask me to do things like count the number of sugar cubes in a tray at a restaurant that I wouldn't be able to afford to dine at regularly myself because they have a bet about it--I grit my teeth, smile, and while handing the tray to a waiter, I tell them if it's "on the clock." If so, I bill out at 1-2k USD an hour. Want me to count your peanuts for you? Ok, but I'll charge you about $34 per minute of my time.Confidence is when someone brags to me about their son going to Oxford then LSE, I tell them "well, I went to Harvard and Columbia but I have friends who never finished high school who are doing much, much better than me so personally I don't think paying 6 figures a year for an education is worth it."Outdouche the douches by simply not giving a shit about whatever silly metrics they use to measure the value in their meaningless lives. Tell them you don't have the time to listen to them brag about what's in their food bowls. And as long as I am happy and making or exceeding my sales numbers.I am exceeding them at the moment. I've pulled 500+ meetings out of my ass**** in a completely new industry and with a boss in another country and only 3 other colleagues in the HK office which I am technically the head of.Next year, I will blow those numbers out of the water.Because I am that fucking awesome.I'm going to promote this to a few hundred people now because it's worth reading.
