PDF Editor FAQ

What is Europass format for CV?

Europass Cv format is a layout of curriculum vitae that should be universally accepted by organizations within the EU.Europass has a website with a resume builder in different languages that let you compose your resume in the format and then share it or download it in PDF/Word file format. In my personal experience, if certain basic rules ,such as brief description of achievements, working history that makes sense, explaining long gaps between one position covered and another, avoiding grammatical errors, and having a professional email address ( [email protected]) other than ([email protected] ) will definitely help.Another suggestion would be to have a LinkedIn profile that matches your resume and keep your social networks divided from it.Hope it helps and good luck

Even though I speak German, all my job applications keep on getting rejected as an engineer in Germany? Is it because I'm not German?

First of all, I would like to disclaim that I am German by birth and I speak fluently german, but as administrator of the International Friends Munich and an International I have the necessary insight to see the problem of finding a job as an expat from both sides: those of the expat and those of the employer.I have listed below a couple of points that you should think about when looking for jobs.LanguageSo lets start with the biggest hurdle for finding a job here in Germany.Since you are reading this, I am guessing that you are an expatriate. If you can speak German like a local, then there is no need for you to read on but if you are struggling with it still, then this is for you.You will ALWAYS be at a disadvantage if you do not speak German with the same skill as a german. If you have a customer facing job (eg in a call center or at the reception desk), and it is a standard german company, then you are going to have to interact with 95% of germans. When customers come to the reception desk, they want their stuff to be done efficiently and without fuss, so having to contend with someone not understanding them is not good.So the solution is to look for companies that have international clients and this is where you can score the highest. YOUR advantage is that you have lived abroad, know how internationals feel and think and you speak their language - or if you don't then you at least speak English (with a non-german accent which endears you to the customer).Let's continue this train of thought for the people not working with customers. You have exactly the same problem when you work with co-workers in a german company. You will not understand their German and they will have to make the effort of speaking slow with you etc... The meetings will be held in German, the collegues will all talk in German. The solution? Easy, just work for a multi-national company where the main language is English. From the top of my hat, I can tell you that Google, Microsoft, Alliance, all pharmaceuticals etc... all have their main language as being English, so try for one of them. The job page of INTERNATIONAL FRIENDS has the kinds of jobs for Internationals. Download the app of International Friends and subscribe to the push notifications! LINK FOR IOS APP and LINK FOR ANDROID APPWhat you can do, although I think the chances are small, is that you post your job search inside the Jobs forum...Curriculum VitaeDO NOT USE THE EUROPASS CV!That is the biggest single mistake that Expatriates do when applying here. Whenever one of my HR friends see the Europass-style format, it wanders straight into the bin. Here in Germany, nobody ever uses that format and it apparently is "too rigid to appropriately show the mindset of a candidate" (not my words, but those from a friend working in HR).Here in Germany, there exists a total different style of CV that is used as standard. I have included one for engineers (sciences, etc...) here:fileFile Name: Lebenslauf-Beispiel-IngenieurFile Size: 168 kbDownload FileIMPORTANT: Do not forget the photo! Here in Germany, a photo in the CV is a must. DO NOT take a random photo of you in a garden or something like this, that is very unprofessional. No, you need to dress up in a suit, make your hair etc... If you have the money, I would go to a professional photographer. He will be expensive (calculate around 50 Euro) but well worth it.Here is the photo I had done at a photographers for my CV. It is seriously outdated now and I should get a new one done in a couple of years.ConclusionIn general, there is no right or wrong way to go about job hunting in Germany. What you need to remember though is that as an Expat, you are straight-away at a big disadvantage for traditional jobs.Maybe, you have the best education and the best experiences out there but there will be others who have the same, so why would an employer choose you over someone german? What do you have that other locals do not have? You need to play by your strength and those are the ones offered by an Expat. YOU have the language skills needed, YOU are adventorous (as you can demonstrate by having moved to a foreign place), YOU have the understanding of your home country, YOU bring in a new viewpoint into any company. It is your task now to find out where you can best use those skills that make you stand-out amid the Germans!
