The climate we evolved in was the open woodlands and savannas of East Africa, which alternated between those milieus over as I recall a 35,000 year cycle give or take. That was our home for millions of years if you include our ground-dwelling ancestors.Of course we were pretty much naked. With clothes we prefer it a bit cooler of course,.Our eyesight is optimized for open woodland—that’s why we get squinty in bright sun out in the open.We’re relatively efficient at throwing off heat but need ample water so our numerous sweat glands can do their thing.Some groups have adapted to different climates. Its attractive climate has driven real estate prices sky-high, but still, high tech companies’ people want to locate there if they possibly can.Proximity to the ocean and prevailing offshore breezes in these areas contribute greatly to the mildness. That’s what it’s only found in coastal mid-latitude areas.Think San Francisco, San Jose, LA, Santiago, Lisbon, Capetown, Perth, Adelaide, Athens, for example.I find LA less desirableI (I grew up there) because its topography traps pollution so you frequently get dirty, stagnant air hanging over it week after week. Whereas the topography of San Francisco rarely experiences that—the dirty air it generates gets blown down the peninsula and SE to Livermore.This shows how you have to look not just at broad climate categories but the particularities of specific microclimates even within generally desirable zones.Of course no rain for half the year means this climate doesn’t deliver a lush, verdant landscape. Absent artificial irrigation you get Mediterrranean scrub—oak woodlands for example. But the question was just about a comfortable climate, not the consequences in other areas.
