PDF Editor FAQ

What should I do if I’m a young adult (going into college) and I have no idea how to time manage? Nobody ever taught me how to, and I barely scrapped by the last year of HS. What can I do to learn?

Getting used to college life can be either smooth or difficult. Depending on what high school course load was like, that makes all the difference. Managing your time may not be something you’re used to. However, it is simple but only you can make it easy or difficult. I am going to provide the top 3 ways for you to manage your time in college.Create a schedule. Getting a planner, agenda, or calendar setup on your wall can be a big help when staying on track with school work. It helped me a lot. I went from missing assignments to being ahead on assignments. It also helps you stay organized by knowing due dates and times of other events going on weekly and monthly. Writing down your schedule can help you be more flexible and keep from being overwhelmed all at the same time. Doing this can help with pre-planning, as well. It makes managing school and extracurricular activities a lot easier than without it. I even encourage you to allow for some study time in your schedule, too.Prioritize. As classes begin and you get settled the first week or two, decide what needs to be done earlier in the week and what can be done later. If your math class requires more studying than geography, get a jump on math earlier in the week. This helps eliminate procrastination and an increase in the likelihood of poor academic performance. College is full of athletics and social events, as well. If those are things you’re interested in, such as joining SGA, or playing football, it is very important you prioritize. Academics always come first. I recommend setting designated times for homework and studying around practice times. Then, fill in the blanks. Make things align in a way that will make you successful.Create leisure time. Studying, working, and extra-curriculars all day can take a mental and emotional toll on students. Being stressed and overwhelmed all the time can be unhealthy and lead to poor performance. It is best to allot for some leisure time when managing your schedule. It’s always good to take a physical and mental break throughout the day. It can be 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or an hour. It all depends on what works best for you. Leisure time can be in different forms: exercise, napping, relaxing, watching television, playing a game, reading a book, or just chatting with friends. I recommend doing what makes you feel free and relaxed. Doing anything that adds mental stress would defeat the purpose. Breaks are necessary if you’re going to thrive academically and in the workforce. Implement time to kick those feet up and relax. These are just a few ways to get you started with managing your time. Create a schedule, prioritize tasks, and implement leisure time. If you have time on the weekends, go ahead and map out what you can. Doing your schedule on a weekly basis is best. This way, you’re not losing yourself by being too far ahead. Take everything one day at a time. How do I prepare a self time plan?

Print out a blank weekly schedule from Outlook Calendar or any other Calendar program you prefer. Then map it out using different colored highlighters for different activities. If you are a student, use one color for class time, another for study time, if you have a part-time job yet another for work and another for personal time. You can even schedule in meals and sleep in the beginning just to make it a good habit.

How do I be more organised in my studies?

Thanks for the A2A. I agree with Yuliya. Diet and exercise are very important for a healthy body as well as excellent mental health. That being said, steps to better organize your time, you need to:1) Begin with a blank calendar. I like to use a calendar with time slots. I personally use Google Calendar.2) Write in everything you already have scheduled (classes, work, anything else you already have scheduled)3) I like to use colors for different things. I use one color for everything that must be done at a specific time and can't be moved (such as school time and work)4) Write down every test and quiz date you know about and the class it is associated with (this will obviously overlap with school time, but that's OK. You need to be able to see when these things are coming). I use a different color for this.5) Add every major assignment you know about. Depending on the way you think, this could be the same color or a different color than the tests.6) Another option for 4 & 5 is to write them down as tasks on a certain date. Google calendar has a great option for this.7) Look at the time you have left. You need to allow drive time before and after any place you need to actually physically move to (drive or walk time).8) The time you have left is what you have to work with to schedule study time.9) Plan AT LEAST 2 hours per week for every class hour. For example, if you have a 3 credit hour class, you should plan 6 hours of study time every week.10) Every hour, give yourself a 5 minute break and force yourself to get up and move. I use a timer for this so I don't have to watch the clock. Movement improves blood and oxygen circulation to the brain.11) If you schedule more than 3 or 4 hours of study time in a block, schedule a full exercise break. Actually get up and do something completely different for 30 minutes to an hour. The more active, the better.12) A full-time student (15 credit hours) should plan to study 30 hours every week! Let's look at the math. Assume a full-time student at 15 credit hours. A week has 168 hours. You spend 15 hours in class. 30 hours studying. 56 sleeping (8 hours a night). 21 eating (an hour for each meal, 3 meals a day). You still have 46 hours every week for working, drive time, exercise and your social life.13) Don't forget to schedule breaks for eating and for your downtime/social life!14) I like to schedule my time way ahead of time, keep it general (like "studying"), and put it in a completely different color. If you are writing it, use pencil.15) Then I schedule 30 minutes to an hour at the end of every day for "calendar".16) During my calendar time, I look at my calendar for the next day. While I never change the amount of time I've given to anything, I might need to adjust some things. The items that you've put in the color that can't be moved obviously have a set time. It might be that something else has come up and I now need to move something else around a little. But I also use this time to change my general "study" to specific items. For example, between 10 and 11 I will work on math. The last 30-60 minutes should be for anything you didn't get finished.17) I work from home a lot. So having a set schedule is very important for me in order to get my work done. I love to use Google's pop-ups to keep me on track. I set each one to give me a pop-up 1 minute before I'm due to change activities. If I'm going to be away from my computer, I have it give me a SMS. I'm always right on schedule and accomplish everything I planned for the day.18) Finally, STICK TO IT!!
