I was 27 at the time, my sister 13. We were flying to Dublin to meet up with our parents, who had gone a week earlier.Going through customs, they pleasantly ask me if she (my sister) was my daughter. We have the same last name, we're traveling together and she's obviously quite a bit younger than me so it's a reasonable assumption. I laugh politely and say no, she's my little sister but we get asked that a lot. His demeanor changes instantly- he looks up at us and starts asking why we're traveling together? why are “the minor's" parents not with us? do I have permission to take “the minor" across international borders? I kept saying “yes, I have permission, we're actually going to meet our parents now, I swear I have permission! She's my sister!” But they didn't believe me and I didn't know how to prove it to them. Luckily, I remembered a letter our parents had written giving me permission to make medical decisions for my sister in the event of an emergency (she had been staying with me the week before, while our parents were vacationing in England, before all of us meeting up in Ireland). I hadn't read the letter, but my mom had included a paragraph giving me permission to travel internationally with my sister, which satisfied the customs agent.The whole ordeal probably only lasted 5–10 minutes and was easily resolved with the letter from our parents, but I remember how terrified I was at the time that they were going to separate my baby sister and I, and not let us through. At the same time, I was trying not to show how scared I was so as not to scare her, or appear guilty.

You’ll pass through U.S. Transportation Security Administration screening there, and again when departing New York.Leave word with somebody you trust in Canada — who isn’t traveling with you — about your plans, and let them know as soon as you’re back home safely.Be careful, please.
