There are two basic requirements, one that is entirely under your control and one that is not.First, you must demonstrate a commitment to a career in medicine. This is done by inserting yourself into the profession. Hours logged as a hospital volunteer, medical research, work as an EMT, etc. will expose to you to the day-to-day of the life of a physician.Second, you have to earn a spot in Med school. In this regard, you have to out-compete a lot of other pre meds.Once you have gained admission to a college with a strong pre med program, the fun begins. Many required courses are hard and graded even harder. As a Freshman, there will be around seven pre meds for every opening in Med school.About a third will drop pre Med before taking the MCAT. Some change their minds, others simply aren’t doing well enough to have any hope. Of the cohort that takes the MCAT, those who score in the bottom half do not even submit an application. From the upper half, a bit less than half earn admission.To be in the group that succeeds, you need to do better than three quarters of all MCAT-takers. To a large degree, those who do well on the MCAT are the ones who earned high grades in those tough courses - courses filled with bright, hardworking pre meds who are trying to beat you.For many, the biggest obstacle is to acquire the discipline of hard work and time management. I was very torn over applying EA here because there isn’t a huge advantage, but I couldn’t stand to wait until Pi Day to get my decision.Regular DecisionUCSD - AcceptedI didn’t withdraw any of my UC apps just in case financial circumstances didn’t work out, and this was the first UC that came out.UCLA - Accepted as a Regents ScholarMy dream school as a middle schooler! I attended the Regents overnight stay program and absolutely loved it - the campus is absolutely gorgeous, and the people are so awesome.UC Berkeley - Accepted as a Regents ScholarI really loved the environment and energy here! The chem program is amazing, but I was intimidated by the culture a bit. A lot of kids at my high school attend Berkeley, so I’ve heard interesting things.Harvard University - RejectedWas honestly kind of bummed because my interview was awesome, but then again, it’s Harvard and I am already very fortunate to be attending the cooler school down Mass Ave (:Princeton University - RejectedThis was the other school I was contemplating applying early to over MIT, but my interview solidified that I would not be a good fit with Princeton. It’s a very cool place though!Duke University - RejectedI think I only applied here because I loved it as a sophomore, but in retrospect, Duke was probably a poor fit (also, they don’t offer my intended major ).Stanford University - AcceptedI 100% was not expecting this, especially because this was after my rejections, and getting into Stanford has always been ludicrous. I remember visiting in the 9th grade and refusing to allow myself to think of it as an option because of the crazy acceptance rate. Choosing between here and MIT was one of the most difficult and best choices I had to make, and I’ll always be grateful that I got to choose between the two schools. It was particularly difficult because both are such impressive tech schools, but the admitted students weekends helped me determine the best fit.Overall, I would say I had a very successful college application process, and I’m so incredibly grateful. So beyond excited to be heading to Cambridge this fall!

Look for an organization that delivers meals to people who are sick, or one that delivers medical supplies to areas in need. These organizations will let you come on for short times to put together meals or supply boxes with just a volunteer application. Working an event for any non-profit is also possible.As you've discerned, you will not be able to help people or animals personally without due process and extensive training. Volunteer organizations put these rules in place to protect both the living species they care for and to avoid law suits in the event their charges (or you) are harmed.
