Your parents are distant cousins. At some point, their family trees merge. It may be very recent, like the case of rednecks or royalty, or it might be thousands of years ago, like my kids (I am caucasian and my wife is east asian).At some point your family tree merges with your pet dog, your hamster, the mosquito you just squished, the E. coli in your gut and the grass on your lawn. All life is related if you go far back enough. All family trees merge.

Appa. Electrician. Hero. InspirationMy father is the most impressive man in the world .I don't like to call him dad or daddy. Infact I don't like to call him even as appa (in Tamil) . My grandma then stopped taking efforts to make him read.He has a elder sister who he had to help in getting her married to a good groom when he was around 17 year old. Starting from the dowry till meeting all other expenses he arranged by joining an electrician near by our home.He learnt it very quickly and started his own business. He doesn't know to manage his expenses. Infact he can't even say how much does he earn.But he saved every penny and made myself and my brother to be intelligent graduates ;) .I can't stand under sun for 20 mins. He works almost 8 hours a day only under sun.I'm so afraid of darkness and heights. But he repairs by standing so fearlessly on ladders.He goes deep down the well to repair motor.He had got hurt so many times. He was bleeding many times. He got electric shocks too.But he doesn't show anything to us.He constructed a beautiful palace to live in .He is so jovial and he wishes only to see comedy channel and cartoon channel to keep his mood happy.During Chennai floods : still we were laughingHe maintains proper diet and remains the same. He still use hammers in the same manner he held it 38 years back. He loves kids. That too girl kids. Because I feel jealous if he plays with any kid other than me. (Yes I'm possessive even at the age of 22 ) this one he took at one of his customer's home.He is Mr. Perfect. He loves me unconditionally.He wakes me up for my morning classes at 4.30 am like “akshu ma please ma, get up” and drops me at station at 5 am.He waits till 10.30 pm with one eye opened and checks if I reached safe and then sleeps. Let me tell you what I know!My biological mother had me at the age of nineteen, and had been in and out of rehab prior to having me.She managed to contract multiple STD’s as well as tuberculosis.The end. I got adopted.This sounds like it could be a sob story, but it really isn’t. It’s the reality. But it is also such a minuscule part of what makes me who I am. Why would I give it permission to take over?There are things that I struggle with due to being adopted, such as Reactive Attachment Disorder. RAD is a coping mechanism I learned early on which essentially puts my brain on autopilot shut down mode whenever I am put in a tense situation with the people I love.As an infant who did not have caregivers to continually connect with, my feeling of security in being taken care of never really developed. Even though after I was adopted and I have lived 16 years with caring and supportive parents, my autopilot setting is a defense mechanism to keep me alive.My autopilot can be triggered when someone’s agenda is fueled by anger and I feel like that anger is directed at me. It’s enough to cause most teenagers to get defensive, but my fight or flight instinct kicks in, and I shut down.I have had years of therapy to help recognize the warning signs of when my autopilot brain wants to turn on as well as counter behaviors and thoughts I can use to keep my autopilot side in check, reminding it that it doesn’t actually need to flip the switch.I didn’t mean for this to turn ranty, but that is the entirety of my family tree. I can’t even say I was shocked when my parents sat me down two years ago to have the “Adopted Kid Talk.” (I have always known I was adopted, but they finally decided to tell me the rest of my story.)Adopted family trees are messy. They are painted outside of the borders and must be built with the most compassionate mindset. Adoption doesn’t end at the paperwork. It’s a part of my story that will continue to affect who I am until the day I die.So we work with it. I learn to work with what I have been given so I can have the best quality of life possible for myself.
