As my marriage began to unravel, my (then) husband became worse and worse with money.First, he wouldn’t come home for days, leaving the kids and me with no car. That meant if I needed groceries, I had to walk 8 blocks to one store or 11 to another and carry them home.I couldn’t ask my father for a lot of help, as my mother had cancer. More often than not, I was helping her, and my father was filling in when I couldn’t.One day, I found I had no bread or milk for my children. I went to the cabinet where I kepy emergency money, only to find the jar empty. The “proud papa” took it. I scooped up whatever spare change I could find and went to the grocery. At the counter, I found I was short. I was ready to cry. I tried to think of which should I put back, when the grocer told me someone behind me paid for my groceries. I cried as I took the bag and said thank you.Walking home I thought it couldn’t get any worse, but I was wrong. The jerk stopped his paychecks from going to our joint account. He wouldn’t pay the mortgage or utilities.I had a bank book that he forgot about, and with that I paid bills for as long as I could. I put my children on food stamps to put food on the table. I put a lien on my house since you couldn’t qualify for services if you owned a house. Passover was coming and I didn’t have a penny.Agencies that claimed to help made you feel like you were robbing them if you asked for food. I got one parcel and was sick. Everything was dated a month or two before: the juice, other items, and the raw chicken - which smelled so bad I threw it out.I begged my brother for $200 so we could have a nice holiday. He gave it to me - and never let me forget it. If he needed a favor, he reminded me that I owed him. I was so ashamed I never told my parents.The house went to foreclosure about the same time the utilities were shut off. I borrowed money from my father to move and pay first month’s rent on an apartment. When I finally started working I put aside $10 a month to pay him back. It was hard, and I barely made ends meet. My kids hadn’t gotten new clothes at this point in nearly two years.I was still chasing my separated husband to get him to court. Finally, I hired three court servers for $200 a piece to wait at each exit at his job. He was served his subpoena to appear in court. After some delays - didn’t come with a lawyer, fired his lawyer in court - the judge asked him why he didn’t take care of his family. He said I’m having problems with their mother. The judge said “Why didn’t you buy food? Pay for the house? Clothes? What did you do for your children?” He kept trying to say he was having a problem with me and the judge got angry.“What did you do with your money?” the judge asked. We presented photos of his new sexy sports car - bought with the money that was supposed to take care of his children. The judge told him “I’m done talking to you.” Then she asked me what I had done for my children.I showed her the paperwork for food stamps, proof I sold jewelry and used the bank book I had to pay utilities. I just got a job, so we were under a roof.She told my then husband “you earn almost 3 times as much as your wife and you did nothing for your children?” She ordered child support at the maximum allowable by law, as well as back pay of money he should have paid since January (it was now October).He screamed “where will I get that kind of money?” The judge said “sell your sexy car, that doesn’t have room for your three children.” My attorney stepped up and said “we would like to show more mercy than he showed to his children. He can pay off his wife in semi monthly checks.”He took the deal, never realizing he would be paying me for three years. The extra money coming in meant my kids could get new clothes for the first time in two years, I paid my father back the money he lent me - and I gave my brother $300 when he lent me $200. I told him the extra $100 was for him to shove it anywhere he wanted - I didn’t want him to talk to me like I was dirt again. In spite of my brother’s protests that he didn’t mean to humiliate me, he did in fact keep the extra hundred.Today, I’m a bit better off. But I still need to watch my money. Sometimes I get depressed and buy junk I don’t need. But I try hard to avoid that.

I suppose the best way to get revenge on a company is to do something that they THINK screws them over, but does no actual damage. A good 30 years ago, I worked as an Admin Asst for a large, now defunct biotech company. I worked in the Virology Department and most of what we did was monitor vaccine testing studies. This entailed inordinate amounts of paperwork — pulling apart forms, Xeroxing them, filing the various parts. I truly hated that part of the job. We also wrote FDA filings, which were usually at least 4″ thick. We used WordPerfect software and during my approximately 2.5 years there, I got really, really good at it. This was the part of the job that I absolutely loved. Word processing is still my calling.Once a filing was done, it was Xeroxed 10 to 20 times and sent to the heads of all the various departments. Another part of the job I disliked.Each person read the document and penciled in their edits and sent it back to us and… you guessed it… we started the process all over again. How we ever managed to get a filing in to the FDA, much less on time, is still beyond me. I’m not overly OCD, but when it came to the work product, I made back-ups of everything.It became apparent early enough on that this job was a really bad fit for me. I’m the type that when asked to file something, I’m tempted to reply with “do it yourself, I’m busy” or when asked to make a phone call for someone, I’m tempted to retort, “what are you, crippled?” Let’s just say, I don’t do secretary and leave it at that.All things being equal, I never actually SAID any of these things, and I really did my job to the best of my ability, but at some point, there developed a concerted effort to get rid of me.Now, I was too good to be fired (at will State notwithstanding) and so they tried to make me miserable enough to quit (not falling for that one!), so I was moved around from cubicle to cubicle, supervisor to supervisor, and I was basically shunned by my peers, lest they get fired. One supervisor (my last one there) asked me to make a phone call for her early one morning, then proceeded to stand over me while I attempted it. It wouldn’t go through no matter how many times I tried, while she continued to berate me loudly and in front of the entire staff. It turned out later that she had given me the wrong number, so it wasn’t going through no matter what.Anyway, we all knew I was going to be canned, it was merely a question of when. Meanwhile, I was quietly cleaning out my cubicle from the inside out, so that it wasn’t obvious what I was doing. Everything remained on the walls, etc., so that when the time came to make my exit, I’d have little left to pack.So the day finally came. We all assembled in the conference room, and I was basically given my walking papers. Interestingly enough, I was offered the option of clearing out then, or coming back after 5:00 p.m. to spare me the embarrassment. I also was able to cash in whatever stock options I had available, plus my accrued vacation and my last paycheck. Not much of a “firing” and I left with just shy of $6,000, enough to hold me over until I found a job I liked.So, anyway, if you’ve read this far, this is how I took revenge on these people:Remember I said I made backups of everything I did? Well, I gathered all the backups of all the reports I’d done there into two or three zip files. Then I deleted the Unzip utility and left. Never looked back.So what?, right? Well, about six months later, I came home to find a desperate message on my answering machine begging me to either tell them the password to unzip the files (or come in and unzip them myself) so they wouldn’t have to hire a temp to retype everything.As you can imagine, I never called them back. I never actually damaged or destroyed any files that they needed or did anything actionable legally, but it felt so good to get back at these awful people.

A Software Engineer Named BillWhen I was working at a start-up software company in Richardson, Texas, there was a software engineer who was in his very late 50s or early 60s.He definitely triggered a lot of water cooler whispering as a result of his blatant job behavior which made lots of people, including me, think “Bill if you want to get fired just ask.”A Third Divorce Combined With Drinking Was A Bad Employment CombinationBill had gone through his third divorce and drank away his sorrow. He often arrived extremely late for work and then would proceed to take long smoke break every 30 minutes all day long.He had his own office with a very comfortable high backed adjustable chair. He’d take a long lunch hour, throw back a few beers and then come back, nestle into his office chair with his legs propped up and fall fast asleep.A Daily Afternoon Nap Accompanied By Loud SnoringInstead of closing his office door to at least hide the fact he was sleeping, he left the door wide open and snored deeply.In fact, his snoring was so deep and loud you could hear it echoing throughout the hall of the rest of the office floor where his office was located.Yes, his boss, the Director of Engineering, who also happened to be my boss knew there was a serious problem.Bill’s Behavior Continued To Decline And His Snoring Got Even LouderMany people complained (not me since Bill and I didn’t directly work together) about his rampant tardiness, excessive smoke breaks, long lunch, daily snore inducing naps and very early office exits.The Director met with the Human Resources Director to work out a plan to address Bill’s blatantly independent behavior, extremely poor job performance and his borderline drunken afternoon behaviors.Termination Of Bill’s Employment Was A Very Tricky TaskThe Director of Engineering was warned that if he fired Bill, since he was a minority in a protected age and had some years before filed for extended sick leave due to a suspicious back injury, there could be a major lawsuit.My boss was advised that he would have to take up to a year to put Bill on a series of Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs) which would have to be carefully monitored. Additionally there would have to be weekly performance improvement meetings, very detailed reviews and reams of other paperwork to protect the company.Bill Had No Plans To Resign And Wanted To Get FiredAt one point some of the employees asked Bill why he didn’t just resign since he never seemed to do any work, spent a lot of time smoking, sleeping and wandering the halls, and seemed totally unhappy as an employee.Bill would tell anyone who asked that he figured he had about a year before all the appropriate programs were exhausted and he was put on final notice and terminated, at which point he would have unemployment and maybe get a good settlement.Bill’s Daily Snoring Was Muted By Other Employees Closing His Office DoorEveryone eventually knew that Bill was not going anywhere for awhile, so they started walking over to his office to close his door when he started snoring during his afternoon nap.After being put on final probation and notice that he was going to be ultimately terminated, he was moved out of an office into a desk adjacent to the engineering director’s office where his every move was documented.The Last Week Bill Showed Up Insanely Late In PJ BottomsThe last week before he was officially terminated he wouldn’t show up until after lunch and often wore pajama pants and slippers with a white ratty t-shirt.No company in their right mind would fire a person, especially someone who was at high risk for filing an employment related lawsuit, like Bill.After he was finally terminated, which he knew was coming, he never filed a lawsuit against the software company, although he did file for extended unemployment which the company didn’t fight.Bill Had Slowly Declined Until He Wound Up In JailA lot of people, including me, felt sorry for him because they believed the combination of his wife divorcing him and his excessive drinking had caused him to ultimately fall apart.He was offered insurance paid counseling as well as insurance sponsored alcohol treatment programs, but he refused both.Once he left the company he just sort of disappeared off into the ether of Dallas. A few years after he was terminated I heard from work friends that he was in jail for getting several Drinking While Intoxicated (DWI) arrests.Bill Didn’t Want To Be At Work But He Knew No One Would Fire Him If He AskedBill knew that he if resigned he might not get unemployment and he wouldn’t have been able to stretch out a paid employment vacation which ultimately lasted approximately one year.Of course there was no way the company could or would fire him until they had completely exhausted all protective behaviors in case a lawsuit was filed by Bill after he left the company.Best wishes to all.
