I believe one of the most horrendous scandals in recent memory was the Iran-contra affair. it showed a total lack of moral latitude for specific people and entities in the US leadership. We supplied weapons to a State Sponsor of Terrorism, only a few short years after the Iranian Hostage Crisis and with the money obtained from this trade we supported a guerilla force fighting the legitimate Sandinista government in Nicaragua, against the Boland Amendment passed by the US Congress. These guerilla fighters would have been certainly labeled as terrorists if they wouldn't have foughr a leftist government. Of course almost no one saw the inside of a prison for it, because everyone involved got probation and on top of that most were pardoned by President George H. W. Bush, some even before the trial. Everyone can read about it in many sources of information, but to me this is one of the worst examples of political medling in other countries affairs and of complete disregard of our own laws and norms.
