When I was around 20, I applied for disability. I have a number of physical and mental health issues, any one of which would qualify me on its own, never mind all of them together. Or possibly get a part-time job with very limited hours, instead. I shared my dreams of adopting a child, even though I knew it would be impossible to care for a baby with my health issues. Earlier in the year, I’d visited my brother in Sweden. I hadn’t seen him in years, so I stayed for a couple of weeks and spent most of that time in his apartment, in too much pain to go sightseeing.The report my therapist submitted said that I was planning to simultaneously enroll in college and get a full-time job, and that I was starting the process of becoming a single parent via adoption. My trip to see family became an extravagant European holiday. After reading this report aloud, the judge (understandably) denied my disability application. My lawyer was as flabbergasted as I was, but he told me not to pursue the matter. It was my word against the therapist’s, and being a respected professional, her word carried more weight.
