Due to the high cost of tuition, lower contributions from parents due to the economic recession and a decrease in the available scholarships for students with average grades, many students have full or part time jobs. This impacts the number of credit hours they are able to take each semester.Another possibility to consider is that the generation of students now entering college is very entitled; with this comes a lack of maturity. Without the necessary coping skills and sense of responsibility, this population of students have failing grades or are only going to school part time are they are unable to deal with the stressors of college and adult life.Troy University is a college with high educational standards. The professors expect their students to come prepared to not only meet the expectations of the course, but to exceed them.

Small class sizes - When I attended the student/instructor ratio was 30 to 1. This included the general 101 classes as well. I almost attended Florida State University. Their general 101 classes had a ratio of 100 to 1 and sometimes taught by a GA.Sports - They had/have a very good sports program. While I was there I got a chance to see two football and one baseball national championship (Div II) games that the Trojans won. They are now Div 1 (FBS) and have had much success in their conference and have played against the big boys such as Clemson, FSU, LSU, Miami, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Georgia, etc and many of those games they have come close to winning or winning it. They have beautiful 30,000 seat stadium that they are currently revamping to close in the end zone and their new 7,000 seat basketball arena is one of the nicest college arenas in the country. In addition to basketball, football and baseball they also have softball, women's soccer, golf, volleyball, and track. They have a really good intramural sports programStudent Life was good. I was in the Greek system, however, unlike the big colleges, the Troy Greek system was not as elite or snobbish. It was guys and girls from all spectrums. It was very good socially.Majors - Troy has some very good majors including Accounting, Computer Science,Journalism (print and broadcast), Nursing (they now have a Doctorate in Nursing), Education, Music Education, and Business Management. They have a very good pre-engineering and pre-med programs as well.Journalism - Troy has one of the best journalism programs in the south. They have an on-campus student run TV station that broadcast campus/regional news and sports as well as a complement of special programs on many cable companies throughout the southeast and over the air. They have a student run newspaper that is very good. I worked at both the TV stations and the newspaper and I can say that they give students the experience and knowledge to be successful as a professional.Music Program - Troy’s music education is one of the best in the nation. I was a member of the Sound of the South marching band my freshman year and I remember being in awe of the musicianship and talent in the band. The Sound of the South was around 275 members strong and I think now it's about 300+. TSOTS would stand toe to toe or blow away any collegiate marching band in the nation. They were that good.Success after College - I know of several people that I went to school with that became executives of major corporations and/or started a successful business. Most all of my friends including myself are very successful professionals.Tuition - When I attended the tuition was lower than all of my home state’s (FL) college and that is including the out of state fee. I pretty sure the tuition as gone up but it’s still very affordable.Small Town USA - Troy University is located in a town of about 15–20,000 citizens. Very friendly town folks that support the university and its students.Close to the Beach - Troy is only 2 hours from Panama City Beach, Destin and Fort Walton Beach in Florida. Sugar white sands and beautiful emerald waterCampus - The Troy campus is absolutely beautiful. You can walk to any of your classes from the dorm or fraternity house in less then 10 min.
