Which was J.R.R. Tolkien's single best line of writing?

‘Which was J.R.R. Tolkien's single best line of writing?’The one line that is the reason why I can’t watch Peter Jackson’s effort again. Jackson left a lot out, for various reasons, but this? To me, this has always been the key line of The Lord of the Rings., It’s in this passage:‘Then Frodo stirred and spoke with a clear voice, indeed with a voice clearer and more powerful than Sam had ever heard him use, and it rose above the throb and turmoil of Mount Doom, ringing in the roof and walls.‘I have come,’ he said. ‘But I do not choose now to do what I came to do. I will not do this deed. The Ring is mine!’ And suddenly, as he set it on his finger, he vanished from Sam’s sight.’ [1]It says a lot, that line. It says that nobody can withstand the One Ring’s power — no matter that they’ve slogged over half of Middle Earth with this purpose in mind. Frodo has almost literally passed through hell, to stand over the Cracks of Doom and look down at the fire in which the Ring can be unmade. But his purpose evaporates.More that that, however. It’s the hinge on which the story pivots, and — for all he’s sometimes been way too passive — this is what Frodo Baggins chooses. With all of what he’s done now behind him, and with all the free will in him, Frodo acts. “I will not do this deed.”Of course, this being Tolkien, Divine Predestination or Providence or some such thing is standing behind him, in the person of Gollum. Frodo’s decision can’t stand. Tolkien’s hero has to fail, because God has to set things right, not people. About all we get to see of what Frodo would do with the Ring is that he puts it on and vanishes—presumably to escape Mount Doom. (Maybe we wonder if he would have challenged Sauron, or vanished back under the mountains like Gollum before him… But I don’t think that was the type of story Tolkien was interested in writing.) Still, we get this one crucial moment of agency.Without it, Frodo is little more than a Ring-bearing sack that other people have to carry over their shoulders to Mount Doom. Then he can’t avoid being jumped on by Gollum, who accidentally falls into the Cracks of Doom. As endings go, it’s on a level of “big rock falls out of sky, everybody dies”.If best line is defined as ‘the one that still makes the hairs on my neck stand up’, this is the one. “I do not choose now to do what I came here to do.”[1] J. R. R. Tolkien. The Return of the King (Kindle Locations 3876-3879). Houghton Mifflin.

What is the legal process for advertising agency start up?

Depends on what kind of ownership it is. For a proprietary firm, there are no legalities involved. You just start work, maintain books and pay tax on time. But if you want, you can go ahead and get the name and logo registered. If it is a partnership, then you'll need a deed of partnership on a stamp paper (i don't know the value but the notary can tell you). The deed should specify role of each partners, penalties if any in case of avoidance of duties, and it would be better if there is an exit strategy in case a partner wants to leave or buy out the entire agency. No more legalities are necessary here too. Again, registration of agency name and logo are optional.

What classic novels have Quorans attempted to read but had to give up because they were too distracted or offended by the casual racism, sexism, or other prejudices of a past era?

It’ll have to be Robinson Crusoe.I read the book (in Chinese) when I was quite young, sometime during middle school, 14 or 15 years old, years before I fully understood the horrors of colonialism and the so-called “white man's burden". It was during a time when children enjoyed reading “adventure stories": stories about great expeditions and exploration of the unknown world. I also read many Jules Verne’s novels, including “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea”, “Journey to the Center of the Earth” and “Around the World in Eighty Days". I love reading about places that I've never been to and following the great deeds of great (almost exclusively white) heroes.I actually kind of liked the book when it started. I enjoyed reading about how Crusoe survived the shipwreck and made a living all by himself. I enjoyed the part about how he hunted animals and grew food. But this sense of annoyance started to creep inside me after he saved Friday. Things went downhill from there.I didn't think much about the heroes being white at the time. After all, it seemed quite reasonable that western white people write about stories featuring western white people. But even as a wee teenager who didn't know any better, I found Robinson Crusoe’s relationship with Friday problematic, even if I didn't know exactly what the problem was. It just felt instinctively wrong to me. I guess I saw Friday as a person, different, but equal to Robinson ,though the book disagreed with me. The way Crusoe treated the indigenous people and how the indigenous “cannibals” are depicted in the book. I think even at that young age, I kind of knew that the indigenous people weren't really cannibals and Crusoe's condescending view towards them spoke for a much deeper and much more sinister root of oppression and white supremacy. In the book,Friday was never the equal of Crusoe and Crusoe was presented as a civilized person “saving" the uncivilized Friday from his savage people and then “saving" Friday's people from their savage culture. I found this entire “saving" thing extremely annoying. I guess at the time, I was disappointed or more perplexed about the purpose of Crusoe. In all other “expedition" stories, the protagonists always end up discovering something amazing. Under the ocean or inside earth, they discovered great things. What did Crusoe discover? Nothing, he came across a bunch of savages by chance and ended up “saving" them. The point of the book is not discovery, but “saving savages".I think I read a part of it, up until the “cannibal party" part.I found the entire plot of poor taste, and I just lost interest. It's stupid and boring.Another book (I just remembered) that really turned me off was oddly Medea. When I first read Medea, I really liked her. She was pretty and powerful! I mean, there weren't many powerful mortal women in Greek mythology. I think she was the first female sorceress I've read about and she could do so many wonderful things.Then….. Came Jason. She completely lost her agency. At the time when I first read it (again as a wee teenager), I didn't even know the concept of agency. I remembered reading the story and constantly asking myself: “But why? WHHHHYYYY?!” How could such a strong powerful sorceress do all those things for a random dickhead like Jason? What did she see in him that I couldn't see?! She could have done so many great things, been a heroine herself, battled monsters, saved damsels (or… a damoiseau? I actually have to google this).” But instead, she got stuck with some asshole and did all those horrible things so the so-called asshole could get ahead. She did more horrible things to get revenge on the asshole. It's like… everything she does, she does because of the asshole, not because of herself.I found her character to be completely unrelateable and just unbelievable. As a girl I couldn't imagine myself doing anything Medea had done for Jason, let alone killing her own children just in order her good-for-nothing cheating husband to get back at her! I mean WTF?!As a grown ass woman, I still don't get it. It bothered me so much, not only because this story is completely hogwash, but also it is supposed to be a classic! Like for over 2000 years since Euripides wrote about her, generations of people think thought story is great! And I was like… but… WHY?!!!!! HOW?!!!!The play is actually pretty short, so I glanced through it until the end and I kind of lost all interests after she killed her children. Still, I did like how she escaped by riding a chariot pulled by two dragons. That was pretty cool.I guess what I got out of that book is “If I were a powerful sorceress, I didn't end up with a dickhead like Jason and ruined my life for him".Thank you,Stephanie, for the A2A!You know me too well! I wouldn't give up any opportunity to discuss some problematic classics. :D
