By American standards, how liberal are you?

I’d probably score about a 20% on the American liberal-o-meter.My low score is due to three main reasons:A complete lack of faith in the motives and abilities of politicians and the federal government when it comes to solving problems without creating more problems (and benefiting themselves in the process).A recognition, appreciation, and respect of the diversity of cultures in the United States. Part of that respect includes “not forcing them to conform to the norms of a more dominant outside culture.”Want to change it from “Columbus Day” to “Indigenous People’s Day” in Oregon? Rock on. You do you. I don’t live there, so what business is it of mine?Same thing for Alabama if they want to teach abstinence-only sex ed in public schools. Rock on. You do you. I don’t live there, so what business is it of mine?A recognition, appreciation, and respect of individuality. Part of that respect includes not treating people differently because of their demographics or socio-economic status.I’d rather everyone pay less in federal taxes and the federal government have less of a role in everyone’s lives, but, at the same time, I recognize that the federal government does have a role to play here. I’m not some sort of anarchist.I think that the government has plenty of money to do what it should be doing, if it just spent that money correctly.Income inequality doesn’t really bother me. I don’t think the government could do anything substantial about it, anyway. Anything the government did to even things out would just be able bringing down the top, not lifting the bottom. It’s about spiting the rich, not helping the poor.My default assumption is that every politician above the local level is lying, or only telling half-truths. (That’s why criticism of Republican politicians doesn’t faze me… Telling me that a Republican politician is a liar just confirms what I already suspected about all politicians. I vote for the Republicans because they at least pretend to want to lower the role of government in my life.)I sincerely think that the vast majority of all elected officials at the federal level, from all parties, could not care less about me or my family after Election Day. I believe they will say what they have to say to get elected, even if they themselves don’t believe it. And they will most certainly not follow the same laws they pass for the rest of us most of the time.Because of my respect for individuality, I really don’t care what happens between consenting adults. That’s where a lot of my “liberal points” come from. I was never opposed to gay marriage, and I’m in favor of legalizing some victimless vices.I also support a substantial reduction in the size and reach of the military, so long as the savings were passed back to the taxpayers. If Libertarian were a viable political party in the United States, I’d be one of them. But they aren’t. Ever the pragmatist, I usually just label myself as “conservative” and vote for the candidate who gives conservatism the most lip service… usually the Republican.Fortunately for liberals, I live in a state where my vote usually doesn’t matter anyway.

What are the strongest majors in terms of job prospects and what are the weakest majors at Oregon State?

The most important thing to understand is that companies generally hire you for the experience you possess, not necessarily what you studied in school. Therefore, your first job out of college is the one where your major matters the most. There is a fall off among your second and third jobs in terms of one's major. There are a few careers that are highly focused and require a specific major, including tech and management consulting (mine), law and medicine. Outside of these specialty fields, only your first boss really cares.Oregon State (my alma mater) majors that have strong demand include the engineering and business schools (including agri business). I would expect that music, philosophy, history and other liberal arts would be more limited in introductory job prospects. The interesting change in our economy, often driven by new startups that challenge the status quo, is that it is easier to pivot when one graduates with a major that is out of favor. I have hired senior project managers with government studies degrees, management consultants with philosophy backgrounds and the like.My advice is to major in what you enjoy and do well. After graduation, you will have to use your creativity anyway to build an experience profile to make money doing what you love to do anyway - whether a job or your own business. Good luck and welcome to a great university.
