As a soldier in an army, what are your thoughts on berets?Fuck Shinseki. He set back Japanese-Americans in the military forever. [For those who say that’s racist, no, you’re getting into something that doesn’t involve you, I’m largely Japanese-American, racially and culturally.] The next time one of my possible cousins is considered for general, they’ll say ‘Oh, no, remember that fucker Shinseki?’ and pass on his promotion packet.Shinseki’s known for one thing-”everyone gets a beret”One of the things I’m very happy about is, I thank God about, was I got the fuck out of the Army long before the everyone gets a beret phase.I know some people who did NOT join the Army during that period because of the fucked up way many soldiers wore the beret, among those who didn’t earn them. A dirt bag soldier with a beret looks really, really frigging bad. I can remember the shock of a woman I know, who’d been around the Army when she started seeing the fucked up berets worn by some soldiers who didn’t earn them.She’d thought they came preformed and always looked nice, because she’d seen Rangers, and SF on Ft Lewis, and some of the 18th Airborne Corps soldiers in them.Berets, when earned, and worn by elite troops who value and treasured it are fine, distinguished uniform items of value.Berets, given out as carelessly to soldiers in the manner of past slovenly French units, are a disgrace, a meaningless, awkward cloth for the head of no practical value.I didn’t use a real soldier for this one. But many looked like shit when they all had to wear berets.Kirk is not impressed with these guys maybe because of that beret wear and someone please tell me about those bone pistol grips. There actually may be something peculiar about those grips that is actual history.-Berets are something you want your enemy to be wearing, so you have something to wipe your ass with when you’re done shitting down their necks.OK, she’s wearing it wrong, sort of fucked up even, but I’d not say a word. In real life, I’d probably not even notice the beret.That’s a fine British soldier. They get to wear berets.

In the Army, the Specialists (E-4s) are the top-ranked guys without supervisory capability, and as such, are the can-do subject matter experts on just about everything that gets done. They’re smarter and more experienced than any flavor of Private, but as I said, they have no supervisory power (because they aren’t yet NCOs).But they can get shit done for you.Depot-level Supply is running out of motor oil, but your team vehicle is running a quart low and you don’t want the First Sergeant up your ass about it? Your bro Specialist Snuffy down at the motor pool has a secret stash and will hook you up with a quart if you owe him a favor later.Got some extra points to add to your promotion packet, but the line at S-1 (Personnel) is always godawful long? Specialist Paperpusher will hook you up after work hours for a six-pack of his favorite beer (it’s that expensive Italian kind). But don’t show up until after 1830 in the evening, once everyone else has left.Forgot to get that leave form in ahead of time and now you need it expedited through channels? Not a problem! Specialist Clerkerton in the company orderly room owes you a solid, so he’s going to put your DA31 on TOP of the stack of forms he takes in to the CO, and he’s going to wait until the CO is in a good mood (probably after his first cup of joe). That way, he sees your request when he’s positive, and he sees it first thing.If you’re a junior enlisted man in any service (though my experience is strictly Army), either you or a buddy of yours ‘knows a guy’ who can expedite just about anything, although different guys have different capabilities. It is all about forging relationships and building a complex web of favors owed and favors done. It gets shit DONE.

Doubtful…if your not promotoble there's a promblem…and your not going to be around long. There are many E6 Staff Sergeants who have 20 years…usually they stop getting promoted to E7 because somewhere in their career they messed up and made “ blotter” Congress and the Armed Forces Committee sign off on promotions above E6 and it's unlikely your CO will even consider submitting a promotion packet.
