These lakes then dried out repeatedly, thereby concentrating these organic compounds and converting units into chains of RNA and protein.[6][7]Of course, no one knows for sure whether there was dry land on the early Earth; some scientists think that there wasn’t any.[8]EnergyLiving things need energy continuously. Some scientists suspect that living things arose in undersea hydrothermal vents where there is a continuous flow of Hydrogen, Methane, and Hydrogen ions. This picture shows what one of these vents looks like.[9]And this picture shows how the flow of ions and chemicals at the edge of a vent and how this might produce organic compounds.[10]But other scientists propose that UV light, a steady stream of biochemicals, or hot freshwater springs could have provided the energy for life.[11]So, the first step in the origin of life is getting the temperature right, in water, with inorganic minerals, with organic molecules, and with some source of energy.
