If you’re using Slack to slag on your boss, watch out. As of April 20, 2017, Slack changed its privacy policy to allow employers to download and read employee DMs sent within that company’s Slack account.On their website, Slack outlined the new policy as follows:All slack workplace owners will be able to export and download “all public channel data: messages and links to files included.”Those who buy the Plus plan can request access to “a self-service export tool” to download “all data from their workspace.” This includes “content from public and private channels and direct messages.”Workspace owners who use the free and standard plans can use this export tool, under limited circumstances. They must first provide a valid legal process, consent of the members (employees) and a requirement or right under applicable laws.Automatic notices to employees will be discontinued. The employer will now decide whether users will be told their conversations are being exported.Though this change was widely reported on in the tech press and elsewhere, some people didn’t get the memo. (Of course, it’s best practices to never discuss highly-personal issues using employer-owned equipment and services like email. And it’s thought that Slack was worried about its service being used too heavily for personal stuff, because its intended purpose is to be a work collaboration tool.)I knew a few people who lost their jobs because of it. My friend owns a large production company in Seattle. They put on big events, corporate meetings, awards shows and so on. Everything they do is literally a big production, which takes a lot of manpower and collaboration. Which they’d done through Slack.I don’t know why she chose to download her company’s Slack messages in April, but she did. Maybe she was curious. Anyway, she came across a thread where several people attacked her viciously — calling her a bitch, a cow, a whole slew of insults and complaints.She called these people in and presented the evidence. Fired at least one of them, and told a few others (vendors) she’d never work with them or their companies again.So if you’re using Slack — or anything your employer pays for — realize that technology can and will be used against you and act accordingly.
