I had a young woman come into the station to report a vehicular hit and run. She had hit someone from behind. She was at fault. The other driver left the scene without exchanging information. Technically, it was a hit and run.The woman wanted to file a hit and run traffic accident report.I asked her if she really wanted the police department to investigate the crime and identify the other driver so she could pay for the damage she did to the other driver’s vehicle. That would mean she would get one driving point for being the at-fault driver and another for the violation that caused the accident. That would be two points on her driving record in a state that allows four points in one year before your license was suspended.I tried to stress that the outcome of any investigation would not improve her situation. It could only make her situation worse. I offered to make an official log entry saying that she came to report the hit and run in case the other driver later alleged that she had left the scene.She said she wanted the report taken. I took the report, actually more of a memorandum, that we never investigated (because the only information she had was the other vehicle was a white van) and never charged her with any violation. Why ask for something that can’t benefit you.Then there was the college frat boy who left a frat party a little on the tipsy side. He got into his car and while attempting to pull out of his on-street parallel parking space backed into the car behind him. That car happened to be parked in a crosswalk. A violation in California.He demanded a traffic accident report be taken because the other car was parked illegally and therefore the cause of the accident. In three different ways I explained to him that you can’t hit any stationary thing and somehow make the stationary thing responsible for causing the accident. If he wanted to leave a note on the other car with his identifying information and contact information he could walk away.I also explained that if I took the accident report I would investigate fully. He wanted that accident report.So, that day he scored four points. One for causing the accident, one for the unsafe backing citation and two for drunk driving. If he had just left a note on the other car and walked away.He had driven less that 18″, maybe less than 12″. I would have let it go if he had just walked away.

No. The man had nerves of steel. He was a test pilot, and once when he was flying in a Lunar Module simulation vehicle, its engines cut out. He failed to regain control of it, and ejected just before it crashed and blew up. Anybody else would have taken the rest of the day off to recover their nerves. He walked calmly back to his office and wrote up an accident report.
