This guy - Mr. Jagdish GandhiJagdish Gandhi is the founder of the world's largest school, City Montessori School(City Montessori School [CMS], Lucknow, India). According to the latest edition of Guinness World Records, City Montessori School(popularly known as CMS) holds the title of having the highest number of registered pupils in a single city in any school with 39,437 registered pupils in the 2010-2011 academic year.CMS, as it is known, was opened by Jagdish Gandhi and his wife Bharti in 1959 with a loan of 300 rupees ($6 at current rates) and just five pupils.In 2015 its enrollment has reached over 50,000 pupils, a world record.Through this school, he organizes various events for world peace and unity. As a student long back in '99-'01, I witnessed the scale and magnitude with which these events were organised. Jagdish Gandhi has been practicing as well as preaching world peace since the time I know him. As a student of CMS, you just simply cannot ignore his speeches which happen multiple times in a year. He uses the most commonly spoken language(read as Hindi) and repeats most of the content speech after speech. But that is normal. I have heard some of the most influential speakers and speech repetition is common. What is important is the content and the impact that is created. This is a pencil sharpener.And this one too.So, what is the difference?Let's see.These are pencils which have been sharpened with the help of same sharpeners.Can you find anything?Look closely.This pencil is sharpened with the help of red sharpener. Here “X” Is the length of pencil sharpened, which here is 2.2 cm.And the length of the leadof pencil is almost 0.8 cms.Here, Y = 1.7cms.And the length of the Lead is 0.5 cms.Which means you are sharpening extra 0.3cm of Lead,which ultimately is of no use(as we prefer pencils with pointed ends). Now suppose the Lead breaks . Then you again sharpen it.The average length of a pencil is 18 cms. And if you use type 1 sharpener then you'll have to sharpen the pencil 22.5 times till it is used completely to the end.And if you use type 2 sharpener then you'll have to sharpen it 36 times till is used completely to the end.Here's the thing, difference in number of sharpenings is 13.5 (36–22.5).As the difference in Lead lengths is 0.3 cms (0.8cm of type1 - 0.5cm of type2).Which means you'll be wasting 4.05 cms of the lead. And as we are used to not using very short pencils which are less than 4 cms in length. In all we'll be wasting on average 8 cms of the pencil we buy. And in the end we buy new pencil, use on average 10cms of it and generate more demand for the pencils and more revenue for pencil makers.So, Don't fall for beauty of type 1 sharpener ( it does make pencil look more pretty), buy type2 sharpeners.Jago Grahak Jago.!!( English translation:Wake up consumers, wake up)

Yes, yes, yes. Without a magic wand, too.I don’t want to postulate ideal conditions. Chances of them occurring are always low. I want to suggest a path that has a good chance of working. Remember 1991? Not too much changed in India, but the economy took a new path.There will always be debate about economic policies. So, I want to stay above this detailed discussion - focus on the big picture. So, this is what I want. Not easy - but no too hard either.Maintain internal harmony. We don’t need a North-South divide based on trying to make Hindi required of everyone. We don’t need politicians promoting and provoking religious and caste strife. We cannot get rid of traditional identities in elections, but after the elections are over, the government should treat all equally. This will allow India to focus on economic growth. Not a major new issue.Focus on China and strengthen India’s status/position with its neighbors. I am not asking for peace with Pakistan - that is asking for too much. Anyhow, it depends equally on Pakistan, But, India should stop being highly bugged by Pakistan and focus on China as the major future threat. In response, India should strengthen its position with its other neighbors. I sometimes feel like I am one of the few people saying this.Tell India that the CMs must do a better job. The Prime Minster is the head of the Union government. [Legally, there is no such job as ‘Prime Minister of India.’ Rather, India has a Prime Minister. And India has Chief Ministers.] Many, many things fall under the domain of the Chief Ministers. Instead of saying “I will do it all,” the PM must explain to Indians that they need to pressurize their CMs if they want India to progress quickly. Thus is a key missing piece of the puzzle. Unless the CMs of large States shape up, India cannot grow quickly. Too many of them have their eyes on divsive social issues, not on economic growth.Build India’s infrastructure. We are lagging far behind China. Some parts of the infrastructure are controlled by CMs. Make the people understand that. Other parts are controlled by the PM. For example, the Railways. They need to be upgraded to be safer, faster, and more comfortable. There is some progress on this. It just needs to be speeded up. And, in the power sector, unless the CMs shake up the discoms (distribution companies) thoroughly, including management, schemes run by the Union government will not be enough.Upgrade the education system. Without an education system that teaches students to think for themselves, India is constraining its growth. The modern world is about quick change. Yes, we do manage some change even with the current education system. Imagine where we would be with a better education system. The CMs have a major role in this. They run the majority of elementary schools. They are doing a very bad job.Of course, there are other things. What about ending corruption? Reforming the administrative system? And so on. All important. But, I want to lay out a core agenda that India surely must follow in order to hit 10+ real GDP growth for 10 years or more.
