According to my little counter-thingie I’ve typed roughly TWENTY MILLION WORDS on this keyboard in the last three years. It’s amazing I **HAVE** any fingers left! Hmmm… at, say, 40 wpm that would be… 500,000 minutes… heck, bop it to 600K for the math. That’d be almost 10,000 hours, so a bit over 3,000/year, … heh… ok… I kind of doubt I’m typing here 60 hours / week, so we’ll just leave it as being A LOT!

Yes. When I was in Vietnam in 1966 I was an assistant machine gunner. My gunner’s name was “Little” Jimmy Smith. He was the smallest Marine in the battalion. He humped that M-60 all day without a whimper. He sometimes carried other guys gear in addition to his own. We were moving through the “Arizona Territory” south of Da Nang. Elephant grass 6 to 8 feet tall, cut you like a knife. We always rolled our sleeves down before moving through this stuff.It was about 1045 & already hotter than hell. Units ahead of us were getting in firefights as close as 2 yards apart.Earlier that morning Jimmy had said to me, “Perk, I’m gonna’ die today”. I told him to shut the fuck up & not talk like that.Around 1105 the gooks opened fire on us. Smitty and I, along with 2 ammo bearers moved up. Smitty was giving a base of fire in support of other grunts who were moving on line. His last belt was getting short & I turned around to get another can of ammo. While I had my back turned the gun stopped firing. When I turned around…..Smitty was laying on his right side with blood pumping out of his carotid artery. He was looking me in the eyes & the look seemed to say, “See I told you so!”. There was nothing I could do but watch my friend die. I couldn’t pinch off the artery because blood is too slippery & I couldn’t get a grip on it. I screamed for “Doc”. The corpsman arrived and tried to put a clamp on it. In fact, I want to thank you for posing this question: I enjoy your unusual interpretation.For close to half a century, I have been used to only thinking about Chinese characters from the traditional POV: pronunciation (present, past and dialectal), semantics, syntax, graphic components and ancient origins. You have reminded us Chinese users to be creative, to keep our minds fresh and open to new ways.Yes, the character 美 does look a bit like a centipede, but this is mostly because of the fact that it is a printed form with a series of equidistant lines. When written by hand or with a brush, the resemblance is not so strong.Below is the same character in three different fonts. Notice how the second, very elegant font (瘦金體 Shòujīn Tǐ/Showjin Tii "slender gold"), devised by 宋徽宗 Sòng Huīzōng/Sonq Hueitzong (the unfortunate next-to-last emperor of the Northern Song Dynasty: Emperor Huizong of Song), does not look much like a centipede. The third font, which resembles writing done with a brush, also does not look so fearsome.However, your interpretation could serve as a mnemonic: this character looks like an ugly, fearsome creature, but it means exactly the opposite: beauty. Cool! Thank you for the inspiration.What Does Modern Scholarship Say about the Original Meaning of 美?許慎 Xǔ Shèn/Sheu Shenn, the Han Dynasty lexicographer who wrote the 說文解字 Shuōwén Jiězì/Shuowen Jieetzyh, the first Chinese dictionary that analyzed characters into their components, has long been taken as an authority. Unfortunately, because he did not have access to Shang Dynasty oracle bone inscriptions some of his explanations of character structure are mistaken. The Shuōwén Jiězì was written in 100 CE, but oracle bones were only discovered in the late 1800s CE.Misinterpretation of Graphic Structure (美 is NOT equal to 羊+大)Based on the Lesser Seal Script forms (Small Seal Script) promulgated in 220 BCE under Qin Shihuang, Xǔ Shèn thought that the character 美 was a graphic compound made from the characters 羊yáng/yang “ram/goat” and大 dà/dah “large”: 美 = 羊+大.However, by looking at the character 美 as it appears in the much earlier but not standardized oracle bone inscriptions (1200 ~1045 BCE), one can see that 美 used to represent a man with some sort of decoration (feathers?) on his head, and therefore was a semantic compound meaning “beautiful.”[Oracle Bone, Bronze and Seal Script forms above are taken from the marvelous Academia Sinica corpus: http://xiaoxue.iis.sinica.edu.tw/jiaguwen/Home/Home]Perhaps the headdress worn by the person depicted in the first oracle bone form resembled the one worn by this lovely young bride:[Traditional Chinese wedding dress with phoenix crown (鳳冠) headpiece, CC--BY-SA, Kelidimari]None of the earliest pre-Han uses of 美 makes reference to sheep or goats, either. The 美 “beautiful” = 羊 “ram” + 大 “big” explanation is thus a mistake that has been repeated over and over again for almost 2000 years by generation upon generation of Chinese teachers (and their unlucky students).
