Having personally worked with CIA field agents in the field and having an extremely HIGH level security clearance, I think I can answer with some clarity. I was an intelligence analyst in the US Army during the waning years of the Cold War and also a veteran of Desert Shield and Desert Storm. The majority of CIA are like I was; analysts, interpreters of raw data and "reporters" of said data. Pretty "boring" and seemingly inane stuff for most...but for those of us who did it, it was exciting and we saw things that few will ever see or know."Field Agents" or “case officers” come in several "flavors"....from station agents and US Embassy personnel to the supposed "James Bond" types. The "Field Agents" that I knew were mostly military working for the agency, former US Military, Law Enforcement veterans or military trained men and women. These agents worked hand in hand with the military on operations where the CIA had interests or deemed valuable to intelligence that they were currently interested in. The ones I met were just down to earth and professional, much like Special Forces, Delta, SEALs. All I ever did (and on just a couple of occasions) was brief on current intelligence and what we currently knew during pre operations and help to put together post operations reports. However, I can say this with certainty….these were not guys that you would want to get on the “bad side” of at all. As I stated, the majority of these gentlemen were/are special operations veterans or veterans of elite units that had a great deal of experience.I can't tell you anything about any of the "James Bond" types...I'm certain they exist but their covers keep them from ever even acknowledging that they are anything other than their cover personality. I may have met one....YOU may have met one if you've ever served overseas, but you will have never known it.All I can say is that the vast majority of the CIA stuff you see is NOTHING AT ALL like the movies. The closest thing to CIA reality that I've seen is in the Jack Ryan series (especially the movie "Patriot Games" and "Clear and Present Danger") where the characters are working and doing research using Signals Intelligence (SIGINT), Electronic Intelligence (ELINT), Imagery Intelligence (IMINT), Human Intelligence (HUMINT) and Photographic Intelligence (PHOTINT)...among others. This is how the majority of intelligence is deciphered from its raw form....going through every little piece like trying to put together twenty puzzles that are 5000 pieces each with all the pieces in one big pile. That's the majority of what the CIA, NSA, DIA, NRO, OIA, BIR, etc AND all the military intelligence counterparts do on a day in and day out basis. It's not done with holographic computer programs and talking supercomputers like we see on TV and movies.....HOLY COW! Over 6K upvotes! I'm very glad that my answer seems to meet with such approval! New York has been forced to pay as much as 15 times the usual price for equipment. I’m going to write an answer to this because a guy named Tom Graham has answered it in misleading ways, and has taken the rather cowardly step of disabling answers from people who could call him out on things he said.He said Rush did make a joke to this effect but:“as First Family jokes go, it was tame compared to today’s humor.If it makes you feel better, the Bush twins were often maligned in the press as teenage drunks, Sarah Palin’s daughters were the subject of rape jokes, there was press speculation that Sarah’s handicapped son Trig was actually her teen daughter’s out-of-wedlock child (Trig Truther controversy), Donald Trump’s son Barron has been made the subject of much recent fun; meanwhile, Al Gore, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden have had very little press coverage of their drug-addled, wayward. and/or miscreant children.”What Graham says was the context for Limbaugh’s “joke” is a little different from the way Al Franken recounted it in his book Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot. I’m more inclined to believe Franken than Graham because Graham’s post is overall dishonest, and Franken is a champion of fact-checking over disinformation. Franken in that book makes it clear that it was incidents like Limbaugh’s cheap shot at Chelsea that caused him to write the book, give it such a title, and parody the cruelty, childishness and coarseness of modern Republican “discourse” such as Limbaugh’s in the first place.I’d just like to point out the obvious: people rarely say anything about Trump’s son Barron, and when they do, Democrats are as angry as Republicans, and the person who makes a joke has to apologize. If Rachel Maddow or Chris Hayes or Stephen Colbert or some other progressive public figure went after a child who is a minor belonging to W or Palin or Trump, maybe then there would be a valid basis for comparison. They have never done this; no progressive pundit or comic with a following has ever done this.Trump’s grown children who behave like gangsters and cash in on his presidency and who have been ordered by the courts to undergo training in how not to rip people off with charities such as the law-breaking, shut-down scam slush fund Trump Foundation — with Mafia Princess Ivanka getting all those sweetheart patent deals in China, and the human rights investigators looking into the slave-labor conditions in her shoe factories mysteriously “disappearing” — those adults do deserve public scrutiny. Ivanka’s husband Jared, with top national security clearance who illegally chats about top government matters with MBS on an encrypted app, and who lied on his national security clearance forms hundreds of times — he’s fair game also. He and Don Jr and Paul Manafort took the meeting to collude with the Russians in Trump Tower after Don Jr responded to the dangle email inviting him to come collude with “I love it!” These contemptible adults should all be under scrutiny, and subjected to plenty of derision.Certainly, pundits and others can also comment on Hunter Biden having a drug problem, and on the right they talk about that non-stop to avoid discussing the crimes of Donald Trump and his grown children. The only thing out of bounds, in terms of Hunter Biden, is Donald Trump blackmailing the head of an allied nation under siege from Russia into announcing he’s opening an investigation into the Bidens based on bogus data and Russian propaganda to help Trump win re-election … That’s not okay. And Republicans in the Senate saying they want the Bidens to testify as “witnesses” in the impeachment trial, along with the whistleblower, is further proof of how low the GOP has sunk. It’s a self-parody party now.I’m not sure what Graham means when he refers to President Obama having “drug-addled, wayward. and/or miscreant children.” I guess he just couldn’t leave the discussion without somehow talking smack about the first black president and his two daughters?
