I was 17, catching a ride to school with my mom and siblings at 6:45am. It's frosty outside, mid-winter in California.I was pretty tired--I wasn't much of a morning person, and this was final exam week. I hadn't applied makeup or staightened my hair. I'd stayed up late studying the night before, and I studied my notes all the way to school.I arrived at school and immediately headed for my locker to get my book, still studying my notes. I made it all the way to the partially frozen puddle right in front of the school door, and something shocks me into waking up instantly.Cold.Wet.Feet.I forgot shoes.I also forgot my phone, textbooks, pencils, PE clothes, and lunch. But the shoes were most important since I just waded into near-freezing water in my toe socks.(The only available shoes were in the lost-and-found: pink furry boots. I kept them as a reminder to always, always check my outfit before leaving home.)

The maximum leave of absence an employee can take in California is whatever the employer will allow.I am not aware of any law that bears on this matter.

I interned at Snapchat during the summer of 2013. At that point, the company had 20 full-time employees and 2 interns all packed into an aging, baby-blue beach house in Venice, California. One thing to note is that Snapchat is a very rapidly growing company; when I joined, I was the second person on my team (Android). As a result, interns have many of the same responsibilities and expectations as full-time engineers. During the first two weeks of my internship, we rushed out a complete UI overhaul of the Android app. By the time I was done with the summer, I had helped launch many updates for the app, including our biggest new feature at the time (Snapchat Stories). I learned an incredible amount about Android, Java, and software development, and felt that I had made major contributions back to the company in turn. At the end of my internship, I made the decision to take a leave of absence from Stanford undergrad and join Snapchat as a full-time employee.Some of my thoughts on the experience:We’re situated in Venice, CA. It’s quite a quirky neighborhood, and I can’t really complain about the weather or ocean front view :)It’s probably more challenging than most other internships. We’re a small team building large products.There’s still much to do! When our most recent intern joined, we had no automated testing on Android, so she single-handedly set up a unit-testing framework and automated integration server. There are many important projects like this that we haven’t yet gotten around to.It’s extremely rewarding to write novel, production code that will be enjoyed by tens of millions.My internship here vastly improved my software development skills, resulted in major contributions to a product used by many of my friends, and landed me a fun and rewarding full-time position.
