PDF Editor FAQ

What is chainage in surveying?

Chainage is the horizontal distance as measured along a combination of curves and straight lines (curvilinear) between two points. This term is usually used in conjunction with route surveying along the survey control line of right of way maps. It is often referred to as Stationing. The Point of Beginning of the line is usually denoted as 00+00 (The Starting Point) with stationing at least every 100 feet along the line denoted as 1+00 (for 100 feet)…2+00 (for 200 feet)…3+00 (for 300 feet), etc. where the first number represents the number of 100 foot stations and the digits after the (+) sign represent any remaining portion less than 100 feet. For example: 31+57.95 would represent 3,157.95 feet.

How did ancient Greeks measure the distance with Stadia from Alexandria to Syene? Is it accurate?

The ancient Greek approach to measuring distances was to employ professionals known as bematists (from βήμα = pace).Their measurements were impressively accurate by ancient standards, leading many modern scholars to speculate on whether they were using any mechanical devices, like an odometer.More specifically on Ptolemaic Egypt, as I explain in my answer to What was the relation between the ancient Greece and Ethiopia?, the Egyptian king Ptolemy II Philadelphus had dispatched various expeditions to the south that were accompanied by explorers such as Philon, Pythagoras, Ariston, Bion, and Simias. These expeditions would most definitely have included bematists, as was standard practice to any expedition with a military element. In regards to Eratosthenes’ famous calculation of the circumference of the Earth, some commentators on Martianus Capella’s report have suggested that Ptolemy III had the route surveyed for Eratosthenes’ benefit. This seems unlikely, but even if true, I would expect that the surveying team would also have included bematists.

What was the longest single truck consignment from one part of India to another and how many days did it take?

What was the longest single truck consignment from one part of India to another and how many days did it take? This has been the most difficult query from you to me; As I needed to update this stuff for myself, I loved the research on it!A bit of checking around reveals that the Longest Consignment in recent times was this project of transporting a long column from IGSEC plant in Dahej to Adani Port Dahej in 2013. From there the column was put on barges and tugged to Mumbai port and from there on to a ship to Mexico. The transporter of this project was Boxco Logistics India (P) Ltd based in Mumbai.Monstrously Heavy & Ridiculously Long transport packages are called Over Dimensional Cargo (ODC) in transport lingo. These are usually heavy industrial equipment used mostly in power generation, oil refining, construction sections & components, space rockets and many such heavy duty stuff. These ODCs are transported using long trailers called modular trailers which come in 2 types, manual driven trucks with modular trailers & Self-propelled modular transporter/trailer (SPMT) which are made up of multiple axles which are self propelled & computer controlled for synchronization. So all those extraordinary extreme loads we see in extreme engineering across the world are handled on road by these MTs & SPMTs.(Truck based manual driven Modular transport)(Self-propelled modular transporter)To transport these gargantuan monsters involves a complex process of many logistics activities like:Pre-route survey - To understand issues on the route the cargo will have to take from point A to Z. As there will be a number of obstacles the given path will have and to come up with a transport plan to deal with them.Civil work, Repair and Restructuring - This involves dealing with removing & putting back civil structures or reshaping them according to needs.Site handling & road development - The zone of transport has to made feasible for the cargo to go through smoothly including making the roads as motorable as possible.Transport system customization for special cargo - This means depending on the weirdness of the cargo the transporter needs to customize & rejig the transport equipment to suit the special cargo. So this longest transport project in India was to transport a C2 splitter column which weighed a whopping 880 tons and was 92 meters long. This was made for a refinery in Mexico by ISGEC Hitachi Zosen in it’s Dahej plant in Bharuch district of Gujarat. The first phase was to transport to it over land to Adani Petronet port in Dahej itself, a distance of just 6.7 kms. But even this distance had it’s difficult challenges as explained below.[“The transportation of the columns from ISGEC plant to Adani port was a challenge, as the splitter measured 91 m x 9.5 m x 9 m in dimensions. Apart from the splitter, a 380 ton quench water tower and a 250 ton demethaniser were also to be transported along with their accessories. Civil works like road widening, removal of obstacles including dividers and light poles were carried out prior commencement of transportation. Electrical line shutdowns also had to be arranged with the local electricity boards. In coordination with the local police, the transportation was carried out using SCHEUERLE-KAMAG K25 self-propelled modular transporters. The team faced a large number of challenges including turning restrictions like divider road ends and conveyor belt structures which were mastered by the elaborated steering modes of the SCHEUERLE-KAMAG K25 SPE. The transportation of all 3 pieces of equipment was carried out in a span of four days. The entrance wall to Adani port was razed to move the convoys into its premises. On site transportation at the port also posed a challenge due to narrow passages existing especially for the 91 m long splitter.”] Extracted from (Heavy / ODC Transport in India)The rest of the journey on the barge to Mumbai port and from there to Mexico was also quite challenging, you can read about this in BOXCO handles longest ODC through Mumbai port. There is also another instance when a company Allcargo Logistics transported another massive column of 64-metres long & 150-metric tons over a longer distance of 600 Kms from Kandla SEZ unit to an integrated phenol-cumene plant at Dahej. [Customer speak - Perfect execution of a massive movement - Compass]From the India’s Limca book of records:According to them one of the Largest Odd-Sized Cargo Transportation in India was Bal Roadlines Pvt Ltd (BRPL) transporting a 18 m long, 7.8 m wide and 8.87 m high C2 Splitter Reboiler Drum for Larsen & Toubro Heavy Engineering from their plant in Vadodara, Gujarat to their client Reliance Industries Ltd at Jamnagar, covering 491 km by road in 42 days from June 18, 2015. (Largest Odd-Sized Cargo Transportation)Wind Mill Blade Transport:The most usual stuff we get to see in such long and heavy transport are wind mill blades being tugged along our highways. Commonly they are 50 mts long but it seems they are now reaching higher lengths as rotor diameters are increasing. We will now get to see special trucks called Wind Turbine Blade Adapters exclusively made to carry these turbine blades at an angle of 60 degrees and also be able swivel 360 degrees. This obviously has a lot of advantages in dealing with transport route challenges of deep road twists & turns, hills, trees, height blocks, etc. Thanks for the A2A GV.Ref: Pictures courtesy Google, respective sites & blogs.P.S. Guys, there has been a stupid blunder, I guess I had to write an answer for the longest route rather than the longest consignment. It should have been some answer like the route from Kanyakumari to Leh Ladakh or to the farthest North East corner like Arunachal Pradesh. I guess I got bit confused and a late night answer results in the above. But I do hope the little titbit of information above also helps regardless of my goof up! :)
