For the last 11 years, everything I own has fit into a bag. And believe me, the contents of my bag (and choice of luggage itself) has changed many times!As with most newbie travelers, I started off taking way too much stuff (going with the “just in case” mentality, as Daniel Racovitan mentioned). Over the years, I learned to pare everything down to some very smart basics.But the operative question for me, is why a backpack? Rarely do I find myself trekking with my luggage or needing to strap it on my back. Thus most of the time a backpack is more of a pain (literally) than a pleasure. After going through a few backpacks (and hating them), I migrated to a wheeled backpack (since I figured I still needed straps), and loved it - not for the straps, but for the wheels! Now I traveled with wheeled luggage only.
