PDF Editor FAQ

What is the most surprising finding using a CT scan?

I was really surprised to see a 7 month fetus on a CT.The patient was a thin woman who had this large lump only on one side. The doctor requesting the scan was expecting to find an abdominal mass. The doctor and the patient said the patient had had negative pregnancy tests. She also had elevated prolactin levels. But there it was on the scout or initial overview of the belly. Clear as day! We did not perform the scan. Back in the day we didn't double check or document the dates of the lab work. We took the doctor's word. I showed a radiologist the single image then went in and told the patient. She told us the negative pregnancy test was done 7 months ago! She was shocked. Especially since she only had 2 months to prepare for the birth. We later found out that she was married but had a boyfriend. She also had a 12yo so she knew what it felt like to be pregnant.I printed the image so she could have a copy for the baby's album. After the baby was born she brought him in to visit.

Do doctors call right away with bad test results?

Mine did. Last year (2019), I had a totally routine first appointment with a new provider after moving to a new state. I was’t feeling great, but chalked it up to menopause, and had chosen this provider because she seemed to have experience with women “of a certain age”. She was reassuring, and ordered the usual labs, which I had done the next day. I heard from her Later that day, requesting an ultrasound—but not urgently. My liver functions were off and my glucose was high. They suspected (I heard later) “fatty liver”—not good but not a crisis.I had the ultrasound a week or so later, and got a call WHILE DRIVING HOME asking me to schedule a CT scan—there were “shadows” on my liver—which (again I find out later) looked liked liver mets from some kind of cancer. I scheduled the CT scan for 10 days out, and got a call saying, “Nope, needs to be sooner”. It was done 2 days later. I also got a call even before the CT scan saying “You might want to have your husband come with you to the follow up appointment”. Let me tell you, that call scared the ever-living S#*$@ out of me!So I’m 10 days from my first appointment, and have my follow up after the CT scan. The good news is that there’s no mets to the liver, but there is an alarming and large mass on my adrenal gland. That’s Bad News. (Best not to Google in these situations.) I’m sent off for an MRI with referrals for surgeons. Then a PET scan. All BAM, BAM, BAM. Some weeks, I had medical appointments every day. In all cases, the phone calls with the bad news came very very promptly. After the successful cancer surgery, I also got an immediate phone call with the GOOD news that my first (90 day) scan looked clear. When did I NOT get fast results? When the next scan after that showed metastases—the doctor wanted to have me in the room when he told me the bad news (the next day).At this point, the oncologist and I seem to have agreed that I’ll see him the day after each follow up scan, which gives the Radiologist time to really review the results. So yeah, I would say that if you’re getting good quality medical care, you’ll hear the bad news quickly. Unless it’s TOO bad and no one wants to tell you :(

What’s the most unprofessional thing a doctor has said to you?

I had an abscessing front tooth and my dentist was out of town. His receptionist advised me to go to Urgent Care and get an antibiotic to fight the infection until my Dentist returned. I showed the doctor the VISIBLE abscess and he recommended a CT-scan. I pointed out that seemed like “over-kill” to me and requested an antibiotic. He started poking the abscess with his fingernail and trying to convince me it could be a tumor in my palate that could go all the way to my brain so he should really do the CT-scan. It was incredibly painful but he wouldn’t stop poking at it despite my squirming and resisting. I finally managed to say “that hurts so bad it makes me want to hit you.” He retorted, “Go ahead, I’ll just punch you back. I don’t care if you’re a girl.” I was shocked and appalled. I said, “Give me a f*cking antibiotic and hope I don’t report you for that.” He wrote the prescription and I left. At the pharmacy (same building) I learned the clinic had just acquired a new CT-scan machine and the doctors had been encouraged to recommend it as much as possible because it needed to be paid for.Nice.
