In Fallout 4, how do you like to build your settlements?

This is for Andrew Saylor and anyone else who may be interested.I like to built my settlements as if they’re sort of frontier forts. This doesn’t always add a lot in terms of real defensive value, though it can if you make sure to keep the raider spawn points outside of your settlement. The problem is, settlers like to just rush forward in human waves. They won’t mount the ramparts and keep the gates closed. They’re idiots. That’s what machineguns are for. Now, old forts designed to deal with gunpowder weapons, typically looked something like this. You may notice that the Castle bears a resemblance to these. There’s a reason for that.Castles of old tended to use square or round towers at the corners, but by the time of firearms, there was a problem with this design. They left dead spots. The shape of the corner bastions [1]eliminated these dead spots. Now there was no place to assault the walls where one could not be taken under direct fire. While you cannot achieve this shape with the settlement building elements withing Fallout 4, I still like to go for the look for aesthetic feel. There’s also the old American frontier forts, a sort of simplified version of the bastion/star fort. You can see the same basic fortified shape, with barracks and shops lining the interior and forming a courtyard. So let’s take a look at Abernathy Farm. This is how it looks normally. And this is what it looks like after I get done with it. Keep in mind, I use a lot of mods, and I don’t always remember which are vanilla. You can see the courtyard, with multiple gates here. There’s also a caravan post under the red awning. The building at the bottom right corner is the barn, next to the mortar pit, and across from that is the workshop. Here’s what the gates look like. You can see they’re nested between guardposts. And one of the other gates. Here’s a gate from Nordhagen Beach, which I think is all vanilla elements. I hadn’t figured out how to hide the HUD yet.Zooming in, we can see the mortar pit. It’s the best I can manage, but I’m still reasonably pleased with it.I like to turn all my settlements into firebases. At the top of the image, you can see the ammo storage, which is made from parts from several mods. In the bottom corner, there’s the “scavenger desk”, which I’m using for a fire direction desk. In the left corner, you can see the entranceway is angled to keep direct fire and shrapnel out. It’s next to the barn because, well, I was short on room and it seemed a decent place to put it.Here’s a detail on one of the bastions, which is mostly vanilla, and can be built entirely from vanilla elements. And the view of the gate from the bastion. And then the view from the gatehouse. This is the backside of the palisade. There’s also the barn. And the workshop.I’ve also moved most of the farm to the smaller area next to the main settlement. In the back of the settlement is housing and shops.I remodeled the back of the main settlement, and with some mods deleted the back wall. I rebuilt that area into a diner. The housing and shops are all from SimSettlements[2].As another example, here’s a few images from Oberland Station.Obviously each settlement comes out a little different, but this is the basic pattern I like to follow. Some settlements I build to be well rounded in terms of resources, and others I focus on food or water, with a robust provisioner network.Sometimes it takes a lot of fiddling to get pieces to fit just so.Oh, and Andrew Saylor, I wrote this question in order to answer it for you. It’s the 100th question I’ve asked on Quora, and it will make my 6,411th answer. Just for you. :)For more about gaming, please read: The Dungeon Deep and Roll for InitiativeOriginal question-In Fallout 4, how do you like to build your settlements?Footnotes[1] Bastion fort - Wikipedia[2] Sim Settlements
