What guidance would you give to a failed civil services aspirant who finally had to quit?

You may perhaps be destined for a bigger success than IAS. There is always a day after every night, howsoever dark the latter might have been. A day that is a new and unseen day. That you could perhaps not visualise previously. How many IAS officers are there in the country? About 5500. And, number of IPS? About 5000. If you include other Group A services too, there may be a total of 25000 officers.Against a population of 136 crore in India. So, do you mean to say that other Indians are not doing anything worthwhile?Ask any ordinary Indian to count names of 10 famous IAS / IPS officers. I bet, most will not be able to do it.But, if you ask them to count names of 100 famous Indians who are / were not in IAS, most will be able to do that. The point is – IAS / IPS and other civil servants, are not the only ones who are important for our nation. No doubt, civil servants earn well, get respect from society, have secure 30-40 years of service. These are coveted elite services. But, then, there are many other services and professions that are much more important and get much more respect.Just to give an example. In law profession, there are certain lawyers, whose daily earnings may be 4 times of the annual salary of an IAS officer. Some lawyers earn up to ₹ 1 crore a day! Though it may not be on all days. And, many earn more than ₹ 10 lakh a day.The other day, I had a look at the election affidavit of a famous lawyer (who became Rajya Sabha member last year) belonging to Congress party. His returned income for the financial year 2016-17 was ₹ 130 crore. Yes, you read it correct. ₹ 130 crore income in one year. Mind you, most of this income is from law profession alone.Another lawyer-MP from the same party returned income of ₹ 38 crore for the financial year 2014-15.Their income for the recently concluded financial year (2018-19) would be much more than the above. In contrast, the annual salary of an IAS officer would be in the range of about ₹ 10 lakh to ₹ 30 lakh.Want example from some other professions?Sundar Pichai, an IITian from Kharagpur, in the year 2016, made $199,718,200 in total compensation from Google (today, it may be even more than that). So, at the age of 44 years (in 2016), he got US$ 200 million. This is equivalent to Rs. 1383 crores per year!!!An IAS officer will need about 5500 years of service to earn this much money!!!Satya Nadella, an engineer from India, now CEO of Microsoft, in 2016, at the age of 48 years or so, got US$ 18.3 million as annual pay, which is equivalent to about Rs. 126 crore per year.Yes, I know, money is not everything. There are other things in life too. But, do you think Abhishek Singhvi and Kapil Sibal (remember, he got selected in IAS but did not join) are less famous in life?Or, Sundar Pichai or Satya Nadella get less respect than an IAS offcer?Think of Virat Kohli, APJ Abdul Kalam, Kailash Satyarthi, E. Sreedharan, Aamir Khan, Dr. Devi Shetty, Chetan Bhagat, Narendra Modi. And, for that matter, even Rahul Gandhi. They are from different professions.Do you think they are less successful in life than an IAS officer?A single success in life (such as getting through UPSC exam) can never make you happy throughout life. You need little successes throughout your life to continue being happy. And, of course, you also need a big success here and there to put you on cloud 9.There are many who have left IAS / IPS after getting selected. One recent famous example being that of Dr. Roman Saini. And, there are many more who want to leave IAS / IPS, but cannot do so, either due to insecurity or fear of uncertainty or some personal / family pressures or lack of future options, etc. I should know because I know many of them. Being one of the very first few to have left IPS, many officers keep contacting me for guidance / experience on the issue of leaving the service. Of course, no names here.I have seen officers who get frustrated after becoming IAS / IPS within a year or two itself. Of course, there are many others who are extremely happy too. It is a mixed environment. Depends on the person concerned. But, the fact remains that the euphoria of success in UPSC does not last long. You need more successes (and bigger ones now). You have to continuously keep succeeding in something or the other to be happy in life. There are a large number of other career options that are available if you have to call it a day from the UPSC option. Many of them equally or more attractive. You need to have a positive attitude to look around you, though.Throw the negativity out of your mind. And, you’ll be surprised to find that unlike UPSC (where the ratio of successful candidates is quite low, due to very small number of vacancies), your chances of success in other fields will be much-much-more. There is no comparison. But, you have to believe in yourself. Believe in your strengths. Think of different ideas. Plan well. Do hard work. And, odds will be in your favour. Chances will be that you’ll succeed. As against chance of success in UPSC of about 0.1% candidates getting selected, the chance of success in other fields (such as your own profession or business; I am not talking of Govt jobs here) may be as high as 50% or may be even higher, depending on various factors. This is 500 times more chance to win!!! It is huge. Just try some other profession instead of giving up in the life after failure in UPSC exam.Let me end by giving you one or two more examples.Recently, the valuation of Byju’s (started by an engineer), has crossed $ 5 billion (equivalent to about ₹ 35,000 crore). It was started just a few years back. There are many similar startups in India that have crossed the unicorn level (valuation above $ 1 billion). Many more are in the queue to achieve this.Yours could be the next. If you care to do it.Never give up in the life. There is always a world beyond the world that is immediately visible to us.

What does ISRO do differently that it is achieving unbelievable milestones while other PSUs like ECIL or HAL are just plain laggards? What is the difference in the ecosystem of ISRO which needs to be injected elsewhere?

I am a Scientist in ISRO, so I am familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of it.Coming to the question “ What is different in ISRO as compared to PSUs and other research organisations ?As the question has asked for strength, so I will focus on strengths only.1- It's work culture. Employees are very much dedicated to their works. Here sometimes employees spend 36 hours continuously in office to meet the project deadlines.2- ISRO has a policy of सबका साथ , सबका विकास in which it transfer technologies to outside private companies, developes the benefits by providing them proper knowledge and training. There is no policy of technology hiding from private sector companies (but with a affidavit of confidentiality).3- No Corruption. The administrative system and purchase procedure are made so fool proof that scope of corruption is negligible.4- No political pressure. We do not face any political pressure regarding which, when and whose satellite to launch. Although it reports directly to PMO still it has full autonomy in its working.5- Good renumeration and allowances to employees as compared to other govt. organisations. Also the promotions are merit based in contrary to vacancy based in other govt organisations.6- Now the most important reason behind it's success is “No reservation policy” for the posts of Scientists. Scientists are selected on the basis of Merit rather than their caste. This is the thing almost all the govt organisations are lacking.Hope you get some insights in strengths of ISRO.
