While traveling in Kerala (South India), I met a group of American and British young students. We exchanged our experiences.I told them about my invitation to a local traditional wedding, to dinner where their daughter had to travel 3 hours to translate English for the family, to lunch at a tea plantation where no one spoke English and where no one had ever seen a picture of themself. I told them about my experiences while cooking my food for local families, shopping in local markets, going on a barge to fish, getting my tea on a plantation, picking fruits and herbs in the back yard, staying in local homes. I could go on and on with the great experience I had as a single female traveler on a budget trip.They told me what horrible experiences they had had. The beer was warm and overpriced. The hotel room had no hot water (it was 100 degrees F). They were not allowed to enter the local church or other houses of worship. Everybody gave them the “evil eye”. Da da da…..I stopped them right there. The locals were right. All the guys were wearing surf shorts only, all the girls had sarongs and bikini tops. When I pointed to that major no-no fact, they answered that it is too hot to wear anything else!The sad thing is, they all had Lonely Planet or its equivalent in their hands for their wonderful Indian experience and they didn’t learn a thing. If you dress like a local, you will be comfortable, can relax and go on with your life. You can start experiencing “……” (fill in the blank: India, etc.) like locals do, not just observe it like a tourist from a bus window.

Short and polite is the best option. You don't need to give a reason.If you received an RSVP Card with pre-printed options, just indicate that you won't be attending.If there is an included card that asks for a reply by a certain date but does not have the fill-in-the-blank style options, use that card to write your note; something along the lines of "I/We regret that we won't be able to attend your wedding, but send our best wishes for the new Mr. and Mrs." would be perfectly appropriate.If there is no card included for this purpose, use a piece of your own stationery and write a short note similar to the above option to let them know you will not be able to attend.If they have asked for a phone call or email RSVP, just use the same type of sentiments.On a side note, while it's not necessary, it is considered proper etiquette to send a gift for the wedding to which you've been invited unless the person is not at all close to you, in which case, they probably should not have sent an invitation in the first place.
